Should I be worried about this?

I had a blood test as I was shedding a lot of hair and thought it could be thyroid but this was the message I got back.
I answered no to her questions about vitamins and bleeding so would this worry anyone.
I have recently given up binge drinking and worried it could be related to that but don’t really want that on my medical record.

Should I be worried about this?

What was the level?

NaiceCupOTea · 26/06/2026 12:52

Why didn't you mention the binge drinking? You need to provide all relevant medical info so they can deduce from that what might be the problem. Otherwise they are going in a little blind and coming to incorrect diagnosis because you've left out telling them.

Why don't you want it on your medical record? They are confidential, no one expect you or your GP would know.

I'd let them know OP. You might be embarrassed but you've stopped now and are taking steps to improve your health. Well done for stopping the binge drinking.

AlgaeDreams · 26/06/2026 12:52

I agree, what was your haemoglobin level? I think she's trying to bamboozle you but suggesting anaemia.

Liver function test came back saying normal.

Did they test ferritin as well? Would be a different test than FBC. DDs have had hair loss due to low ferritin.

BillieWiper · 26/06/2026 13:05

If you won't tell them about the drinking then you or they will never know it's the reason for these results. If you're ashamed there's no need to be.

But if you have given up drinking that's a good thing, it should show up that you're getting healthier? So maybe that's what the renewed blood cells were? Who knows. If you don't speak to them about it you'll never know.

MellowZebra · 26/06/2026 13:06

Could be B12 deficiency @yesterdaysnewspaper which can be related to drinking too much alcohol.

I have just completed titration for methylphenidate for adhd which I’ve waited a long time for and cannot be taken with alcohol so as a binge drinker I had to say I don’t drink alcohol and I immediately stopped so I can take the medication.
Also I don’t really want to look like an alcoholic as I have children and have found it easy to give up the wine as I was never addicted so have just put that behind me but I am worried about these results.

Yes and ferritin was normal.

Results are barely outside normal and everything else is normal. Doctor isn’t worried, from what your message says. Wait and see what the repeated test says.

What I would be worried about are the lies you tell your health team.

yesterdaysnewspaper · 26/06/2026 13:18

All in all that was the only one that was borderline all others normal except acute kidney injury warning stage which just said result unknown.

Serum, iron level - normal
Transferrin saturated index - normal
Acute kidney injury warning stage - unknown
Serum ferritin level - normal
Serum total 25 hydroxy vitamin d levels
Haemoglobin A1c - ifcc standardised - borderline
Full blood count- normal
Mean cell haemoglobin retic - normal
Urea and electrolytes- normal

Those results can absolutely be linked to binge drinking OP. You need to be honest if you want accurate help from professionals.

Yes I know I shouldn’t have lied but I said I didn’t drink with the intention of never drinking and have not drunk since.
The medication has been life changing and I didn’t want to risk that when I fully intend not to drink with it.

Do you think they could also be the reason for hair thinning?
My hair started shredding at 3 months post partum which I thought was normal but baby is 21 months now which is why the blood tests.

If you have been binge drinking then it could be yes. Heavy alcohol use reduces absorption of important nutrients which can cause hair thinning/falling out, heavy alcohol use also impacts hormones which can impact hair, you really need to be honest with medical professionals if you want them to be able to help you.

outerspacepotato · 26/06/2026 13:54

If you're not giving full health info to your health care provider, and binge drinking is extremely relevant, then they can't accurately diagnose and treat you.

yesterdaysnewspaper · 26/06/2026 14:16

I was thinking because my liver function test was normal then I had a lucky escape.
I am curious to why it says acute kidney injury warning stage - unknown.
Does that just mean they didn’t test in which case surely it wouldn’t be listed or does it mean something else like an inconclusive result.
