To ask how much SPF you take on a sunny holiday?

nothingbeatsajet2 · 25/06/2026 09:28

I’m off on my first sunny holiday in a couple of weeks and I’ve just bought all my toiletries.

i’ve ordered:

1 x face spf cream for the mornings
1 x face spf mist for day to day
2 x spf sprays for mornings and after swimming
1 x mist for during the day
1 x scalp mist

all are spf 50 apart from the scalp mist as boots only sell it in spf 30

Seriously OP you will regret with pain your choice of sprays. Use cream, plenty of it.

pinksheetss · 25/06/2026 16:52

We just got back from a week in Cyprus and we went through two bottles of factor 50, one of factor 30 and then a half of factor 15.
that was two adults and one 4 year old

JillThePlantKiller · 25/06/2026 16:57

For four of us two weeks, I take 4 bottles of P20 factor 50, and then buy 3-4 mist sprays in the supermarkets over there as top ups.

Dliplop · 25/06/2026 17:00

Family of 4 but kids are small. 2 body sticks of mineral sunscreen that is so thick it probably still works the next day (apply once or twice a day to adults, 2-3 to kids). A spray one because I’m terrified of running out, can be easier for top ups and to use on scalps because we take our hats off more than we should and don’t swim in hats. Sometimes I bring a face stick but I never throw it in the bag so it would just get used in the morning. All our pictures have that weird white/purple mineral glow, but who cares

TheToteBagLady · 25/06/2026 17:01

I wear Factor 50 skincare on my face 365 days a year, but on our family holiday, we go through 2 factor 50 suncreams in a week.

TheToteBagLady · 25/06/2026 17:02

PS The Nivea suncream was €35 in our hotel supermarket Shock but I’m sure you’d find a cheaper one in the local Spar or supermarket.

I would, however, get burnt walking to the supermarket or from the plane to the arrivals terminal Hmm

stealthninjamum · 25/06/2026 09:33

I think that’s unnecessary, I take a bottle of spf 50 and that’s it.

This.

I have pale skin with freckles and I use one SPF 50 cream.

My regular face moisturiser also includes SPF all year around so the above cream goes on top of that.

I wear a sun hat when at the beach and always wear sunglasses in the summer.

I have never needed to get so many different products as you suggest...

I live in a seaside town in Kent so spend a fair amount of time on the beach and in the sea :) all summer.

plover26 · 25/06/2026 17:10

3 people for a week we take around 1L of various types, mostly standard all-over Nivea 50+.

Ace56 · 25/06/2026 17:12

Same as above, I’m currently at the end of a 2-week holiday and took one bottle of factor 50. Have been using it every day and it still hasn’t run out. I haven’t been sunbathing every day though, so that obviously makes a difference.

Unless you are already tanned/have olive skin, I would avoid the mist. You need proper cream if you’re pale.

LetMeStayInBed · 25/06/2026 17:15

So when you wear factor 50 can you still get a tan?

KatiePricesKnickers · 25/06/2026 17:16

LetMeStayInBed · 25/06/2026 17:15

So when you wear factor 50 can you still get a tan?

Yes, but you don’t get burnt.

LetMeStayInBed · 25/06/2026 17:22

@KatiePricesKnickersthank you - sounds like a daft question but I am very pale and even though I lived in Greece years ago I didn’t really actively try to get brown. Now for the first time in 20 years I am going abroad and want to get a bit of colour.

KatiePricesKnickers · 25/06/2026 17:23

I take a 200ml or a 250ml, and a 50ml facial.
All spf 50+, though this time I’ve upgraded to an spf100 for the face.
However I don’t sunbathe so it’s only legs, arms, head/neck.
I religiously wear a hat.

OP, any hat is better than no hat, and any hat is better than mist.
Mist is a gimmick, you have to rub sun protection into the skin.

secretsevenbackagain · 25/06/2026 17:25

Ponderingwindow · 25/06/2026 16:02

You need at least 30ml per application and need to reapply every 2 hours at minimum. In an 8 hour day, a person will go through at least 30*4=120ml which means that a 250ml bottle is only going to last 2 days.

I know most people aren’t following the actual guidelines, but some of us are basically vampires and don’t have a choice. I have burned through my spf treated clothing.

I buy a ridiculous amount of suncream.

yeah I’m a redhead and if you’re doing it properly it’s about 30ml per application, applying every 2hrs plus after swimming/drying off… I would be using over 100ml a day

I’m paying the price for getting too much Sun exposure when I was younger.
One BCC cut out of my cheek, so I have a nice depression and scar where it was.

nothingbeatsajet2 · 25/06/2026 10:52

I’m willing to risk it

Oh.
I get it now. No worries, OP.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 26/06/2026 14:28

I’m very fussy about which SPF I use - so I bring 2 bottles for body for 2 of us and 2 face for 2 of us. Always come home with some but I’d rather not run out and have to brave the local products.

Squirrelblanket · 26/06/2026 14:45

We usually go for 12 night holidays and take:

2 x 200ml factor 50 cream
3 x 200ml factor 50 spray
1 x facial suncream factor 50

For two adults.

We use the cream for applying a good coat in the mornings, then spray to top up during the day. We'll usually have 2/3 hours in the sun in the morning and stick to the shade in the afternoon. We always have some left to take home (to use in the garden) but I've found it's really expensive to buy there so we'd rather take a spare just in case.

I have sensitive skin so I use the special facial stuff, husband just uses the supermarket own brand body stuff on his face too!

Hadit16 · 26/06/2026 14:56

Are you an adult OP?

Carnationsareforever · 26/06/2026 14:58

Couple of bottles of spf 50 per person and I wear a hat in land and a rash vest in pool.

sunglasses essential and I don’t give a damn how I look - safe rather than sexy is more important to me - so big floppy hat and rash vest and a lot of time in the shade.

TheIdlerReturns · 26/06/2026 15:05

You seem to have it covered (pardon the pun). I wear factor 50 every day regardless of season, plus a baseball cap in hot weather, stay out of the sun from about midday to 3pm, and reapply several times if out in the sun for hours or after swimming.

HeyThereDelila · 26/06/2026 15:26

I’m not convinced by the mists. I always take 2/3 big bottles of Soltan factor 50 and that more than does us for a week.

And lots of hats.

OhBettyCalmDown · 26/06/2026 15:43

I’m with the others. Mists aren’t really suitable as a main form of protection. I’d go with a 400ml bottle but even though you have similar amount in mist I don’t think the coverage is the same. Just make sure you get lots of shade

Sheismycherrypie · 26/06/2026 16:04

Factor 50 face cream by Cetaphil
Factor 30 zinc cream from Boots
I take 2 bottles of factor 50 Green People or Badger for the kids

Smittenkitchen · 26/06/2026 16:29

It's best not to use Kids' sun cream it you're not a child. Adults' cream has components in it which aren't approved for kids but can actually provide more protection. There's an idea that the kids' stuff must be better for more sensitive skin (perhaps) and somehow better or more protective (not so). Agree sprays are not the best for applying a decent quantity. If you're going to Spain, Isdin is a great brand you can pick up there.
