To think schools closing early is going to risk more young people harm

Spotted tonight on the news that a 15 year old boy has tragically gone missing in water this afternoon . I can’t help thinking that sending kids home in the middle of the day is going to be harmful than keeping them at school. Driving through town at 2 this afternoon I spotted a load of school aged lads cycling precariously with boys sitting on handlebars. How is sending kids home at lunchtime in the heat helping them? Most are not going to go home to air conditioned homes.

Well yes it’s a bit daft but then I also see the logic so overall it’s a tricky situation and each school is just trying to do its best.

Basically… it is what it is and it’ll pass by next week anyway

Thry can also do those things at 3.25 and at weekends. If he was 15, he's probably post GCSEs. It's awful but all those kids who drowned recently were on half term. Children don't just take risks during school hours.

YABU
Parents need to be responsible for their kids if schools close early. In a couple of weeks schools will close for the summer anyway. What then, are you going to say schools should stay open all summer? And at weekends?
It's not unreasonable of schools to close, it's easier to keep comfortable at home, there's literally a risk to life.
What we do need in the longer term is ventilation/ filtration upgrades to schools to address this issue. This will also help reduce spread of airborne infections and reduce health impacts of air pollution. So win win win.
Summers are only going to get hotter and airborne infections aren't going anywhere so let's hope the next prime minister treats this as a priority.

Is that not a parental responsibility?

Shireshire · 24/06/2026 20:22

Yabu schools have closed to keep staff and students safe in the heat. When they are out of school it is the parents responsibility to make sure they are safe.

schools get the blame for everything nowadays. Parents need to parent.

Those children will do it at 1pm or 4pm. Sadly.

We have had people jumping in the river today. No schools here closed early today.

Sirzy · 24/06/2026 20:26

Should we just lock children in school 24/7 then? Schools can’t be held responsible for everything!

WolfinSheepsDress · 24/06/2026 20:30

I know what you mean op but this isn't safe either keeping them in and getting them there and he may have been predisposed to go in at another time

This accident has happened extremely close to where I live. It's at a wildlife reserve and there are notices all around the lake telling people not to enter the water. Those signs are ignored by adults & teenagers alike everyday. He could have finished exams or he could have been from one of the local secondary schools. His friends who were there are distraught and his family will probably be going through every what if they can think of. It's very sad.

Hallywally · 24/06/2026 22:17

It’s light until 10pm. If a kid is going to do something like that, they’ll just do it after school. Very sad but school being closed has nothing to do with it.
