for advice about Best way to send a few larger items to Europe?

Helping some one older out here & would welcome advice as I have no idea

She wants to take some small/medium sized things abroad - specifically to a property in Europe that is not easy access (connecting flights, rural).

They are too big to fit in a suitcase but probably would be unwieldy to manage in a box herself on a plane. It maybe possible to do it via the plane if she paid for help at the other end.

Things like a medium sized floor fan (can be dismantled), a small picture, some glasses, family heirloom type stuff. It would probably fit into a large box - sort of size that's about half a washing machine.

What is the best way to do this please? Anyone got any advice? I'm guessing its going to be too small for 'removal companies' so it would need to be some sort of FedEx job? Will there be any issues with customs etc if she isn't there?

What kind of company should I be looking for? Normal shipping or is there another description. Another issue is the end destination isn't very mainstream and not set up for delivery.

There are lots of companies/people who offer this service. The best place to look is Facebook.
I had contact lenses brought to me by a man who does a Norfolk to Chamonix run every week or so. Cost me €20.
Also lots of area groups will recommend someone.

I had a large picture delivered from Europe by the small delivery company ( can’t remember the name but I can find out ). They drive across the Europe to collect items and deliver them to UK. Then they collect items from UK and deliver them in Europe. It was about €50

@Sometimesitsmyownfault thank you for suggestion but I don't think she'd trust a Facebook small company due to sentimental value of some of the items (insurance wouldn't help if they were stolen or lost) plus this is a more obscure location so it's unlikely to be someone doing a run.

When you say lots of companies offer this service - what search terms should I be looking for is it shipping or courier or something else? I get that any of these terms might find someone capable of doing it - but I'm asking for advice as to the best way and most suitable for the job - would be very grateful for any help.

@Definetelynotanathlete thank you for your suggestion. would be grateful if you have recommendation. how did you find them yourself?

I struggled with this too because of falling between removal companies and the usual parcelforce-type delivery companies.

What you might try searching for is 'transportation of personal effects'.

Abitofalark · 26/06/2026 16:48

Oh another term I came across that might help is 'Freight Forwarder'. You could try adding personal effects on the end of that one. 'Cargo' might be another one.

Yes exactly this. Thank you for your suggestions I will have another search. it's strange that it's so difficult.

I wonder if there are companies that transport luggage door to door. I bet it's the kind of thing celebrities use all the time but probably via a private jet!

I'd find Facebook community pages for where the items are going - either the nearest big town or county and ask for recommendations on there. There will be companies likely going backwards and forwards all the time. We've had stuff brought over like that - just ask about part/shared loads - and there were plenty of companies to choose from.

I'll have a look but I think it's unlikely as it's a bit of a backwater - think of a remote Hebridean island equivalent so flight, ferry, connections nightmare and a place with no villages even just scattered housing. I think she'd be a bit hesitant about a facebook find though in case it turned out to be dodgy.
