AIBU not to eat market food left out in the heat?

I know I have a few food issues so I don't know if this one is me being unreasonable or not.

I wandered around a market today with a friend and she bought a sausage roll to eat and a fairy cake style muffin to take home for her daughter. It's 25 degrees outside and the market had been running for about 4 hours by the time we got there.

Aibu for absolutely not eating anything like that, that has sat outside for hours in 25 degrees heat? There wasn't any refrigeration etc. Things wouldn't be allowed to sit out in shops out of fridges for that long so why is it ok on a market? Would you have eaten those things e.g. sausage roll and a cake with icing etc?

Does the pastry stop bacterial growth?

You have bacterial growth on you right now, do you know that?

Bit of a difference though isn't there.

Have you never seen sauasage rolls/pies, etc at ambient temperature in the bakery dept of the supermarket? They are ok for several hours out of the fridge

Most supermarkets are pretty cold though or certainly cooler than outside temps

I would not have eaten either item.

Does it stop bacterial growth though?

I’d have eaten both .. but then again I have the constitution of an Ox. Through my life I’ve eaten food past the well by date (sniff test only), food that has been left out of the fridge overnight, warmed up left over rice, pastries not stocked in a fridge (such as this sausage roll), eaten from stalls at the side of the road in India - you name it. Quite relaxed with the whole thing

I’ve never had food poisoning, or be made ill by food in anyway

I think that's why I get a bit funny with stuff. I had horrific food poisoning a few years ago. I was really, really ill for nearly 2 weeks. My body was in a bad way for quite some time afterwards after pulling stomach muscles, damaging my pelvic floor etc after spending two weeks violently throwing up.

cake yes, sausage roll no

This.

Sausages are full of salt and preservatives so will be fine for a few hours. I'm more likely to eat them at room temperature even in this weather because fridge temperature food is horrible.

Sugar is also a preservatives and butter doesn't need to be kept in the fridge.

ThisMellowCat · 25/06/2026 19:29

Definitely not! I don’t even like having fresh from marks that’s been out all day in the store

BizzyLizzyandLittleMo · 26/06/2026 09:41

Definitely wouldn’t eat the sausage roll. It may have been left for 4 hours on the stall but how long has it been sitting in a van/car prior to that.
Those who say they’ve done it and been fine have just been very lucky.
According to the Food Standards Agency, perishable foods like meat products left at warm temperatures (above 8 degrees) for more than 4 hours enter the "danger zone" where bacteria multiply rapidly and toxins can form.
Eating it presents a high risk of food poisoning.

Absolutely no meat unless it has been freshly cooked in front of me. And no meat sandwiches (ham etc) unless straight out of the fridge.
And I’m one of those that eats past sell by dare natural yoghurt from the fridge at home etc

Mykneesareshot · 26/06/2026 19:10

Wouldn't bother me on either item. The sausage roll is already cooked and I keep my butter in a dish on the side anyway.

Cooked meat can also give food poisoning though can't it.

I have always wondered how they get away with selling food that is so poorly stored! Market food and grazing tables at events confuse me. Meat, cheese, sauces etc all left out for hours- usually warm and sweating when you get to eat it, bread stale etc.

Some people think they're not like other people and will risk it, but I have standards!

baddayformeredith · 26/06/2026 20:51

I would have eaten both. The sausage roll may only have been out for a short time as they must replenish the display when needed

TiredofLDN · 26/06/2026 20:56

Nah I wouldn’t eat the sausage roll, and I’m pretty chilled out about this stuff. I put an ice pack in the lunchbox when I’ve made sausage rolls for DS’s lunch, as it’s in there for 3 hours.

rwalker · 26/06/2026 21:01

Thinking about it Asda has rows Cornish bakery the ones in yellow bags with black writing pies and sausages roll that are never refrigerated and often on whoops trolley

Ineffable23 · 26/06/2026 21:05

I'd have eaten the cake, probably not the sausage roll.

BillieWiper · 26/06/2026 21:08

According to food hygiene things like cakes can be kept at ambient temperature for sale. I think technically sausage rolls etc as well as long as they've cooled down and are sold after a certain time.

But if you don't feel comfortable eating that then don't. I'd worry the icing for the cake would melt but I wouldn't be worried hygiene wise. You keep cakes in a tin or cake box out of the fridge at home. And in cafes they do as well.
