AIBU to keep a family pub meal booking in the heat?

We are in Yorkshire, temperatures expected to reach 30 by this evening alongside the humidity.
We have a family birthday meal booked this evening at 6pm at a local country pub - it’s higher up so might be slightly cooler up there. However my friend has said we are selfish for going as it means the chef has to stand and cook meals in this heat.
She doesn’t think anyone else will be going for meals and everyone will be staying at home with the curtains closed and fan on.

Are we BU to go out for a meal this evening?

Ofc you should go. Double check with the pub that they are open but I’m sure they will be. They rely on food service for most of their income.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/06/2026 08:33

I went out for an Italian meal last night. It was cooler inside than out and absolutely lovely. Italian weather I suppose.

Unless the pub decides to close you should still go. They will probably have fans on and their livelihood depends on it.

Perhaps order salads, breads and other cold dishes?

Divebar2021 · 24/06/2026 08:36

Come on now your friend is being ridiculous. If you were talking about 40 degrees she might have a point but 30 degrees is just a moderately hot day. I might think about cancelling if the pub didn’t have air conditioning in the restaurant but other than that I wouldn’t have given it a thought.

MidnightPatrol · 24/06/2026 08:36

Everyone has lost their minds.

Cosyblankets · 24/06/2026 08:37

This is getting silly now
If it's too hot the pub will close or reduce their menu

DidntLikeTheEnding · 24/06/2026 08:38

Your friend's a loon. Enjoy your meal!

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 24/06/2026 08:39

I would go and, as a pp suggested, order salads, cold starters and frozen desserts. Plus, you may find the pub puts on a bbq or hog roast to get the heat of cooking out of the kitchen!!

Your friend is being ridiculous, the chef will be there anyway and, if you don’t turn up, that’s a table they could have allowed for another booking.

OttersOnAPlane · 24/06/2026 08:42

Your friend is mad. Would the pub prefer to close for a few days and lose revenue? Of course not.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 24/06/2026 08:44

The restaurant will not get paid and if you don't go, believe me as a small business owner when I say the chef and staff want you to go!
Is your friend a public sector employee by any chance? All my PS friends are off work and loving it, telling me I will die if I go in 😂Some of us have to work to get paid!

Loulou4022 · 24/06/2026 08:47

One of our dads works is a chef and he said temperatures were 50 degrees in the kitchen. I’m sure the pub would still want your custom so If you do still go just be mindful that your food may take a little longer and the menu may be a bit more limited and have some compassion for the staff who will be working in very difficult conditions.

I'm PS and melting in my already 30° office.

InterestedDad37 · 24/06/2026 08:55

Go, for gods sake 🤷 - the chef will be used to hot kitchens, and you know, if you can't stand the heat, as the saying goes.

Side issue - I get the theory of curtains closed etc, but refuse to live in gloom 😃
My curtains stay open, as do my doors and windows, and the lovely through-breeze keeps my house nice and cool. I have no fans or A/C

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 24/06/2026 08:59

We went yesterday so similar heat levels, here at least. They were fine. There were fewer people there so I assume the kitchen was less busy than usual. They can tweak the menu, if they are desperate.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 24/06/2026 08:59

@Azandme and all the nurses and DRs etc will be working very hard in the sweltering heat, I know. PS work is both the hardest and most committed and also attracts people who take max paid leave at any opportunity. Like everything, its a mixed bag.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 24/06/2026 09:01

Chefs are used to the heat. Part of the job. Go!

Alittlefrustrated · 24/06/2026 09:01

Chefs are used to being hot and sweaty.
People not eating out because it's hot definitely won't help chefs.

LeedsLoiner · 24/06/2026 09:18

Your "friend" sounds like a right doylem.

Public Sector workers are not all off. I’m PS and working as are all my colleagues. Can you tell us which Public Service has closed?

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/06/2026 10:11

Don't people eat in restaurants when they go abroad in hot countries? Ive been to Turkey and Egypt in 40 degrees and still eaten hot food although the restaurants were air conditioned.

Tink3rbell30 · 24/06/2026 13:21

I wouldn't. More work for the staff in boiling kitchens and too hot to stuff a load of hot pub meals anyway.

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 24/06/2026 13:48

Jesus, has she never eaten at a restaurant in Greece, Spain, etc?

People’s brain seem to be melting in the heat.

But then the business has to pay them for nothing, so makes a loss on the evening. Makes no sense.

Purpleandping · 24/06/2026 13:49

If no one goes they'll send the staff home and no one gets paid. That seems far more selfish to me.

MyOliveStork · 24/06/2026 13:50

I think he would be more pissed off about being told he was losing a days pay because it’s hot outside.
It’s ALWAYS hot in a working kitchen, chefs are well used to it!!! Waitress maybe not lol
