How much debt are you in?

Was chatting to a friend earlier who is in over 500k of debt, which she thought was ok but I think is astronomical.

Yep only mortgage debt, about £500,000 on a £900,000 house. We are lucky that we have no need to have any other debt or borrowing.

If I counted my mortgage, car and credit card - £167k

I’m careful with debt as I want to retire at 60.

noworklifebalance · 24/06/2026 13:50

Huge mortgage but low LTV (<30%).
Capital is being invested so mortgage currently not being paid off.

No debt.

Catarinabella · 24/06/2026 13:52

Mortgage paid 10 years ago, no debt, use credit card but pay in full each month. Small savings and living on pensions. I know I’m fortunate.

Notwiththebullshizz · 24/06/2026 13:54

I don't class my mortgage as debt as it's more so an investment I'm slowly paying into if that makes sense. Besides that we have 3k on Car finance left to pay. We have always lived within our means and have never had a credit card or even an overdraft. If people can afford their 'debt' then I don't see an issue.

We chose to take part of our new car on finance because we didn't want to take the full amount for it from our savings

BuildbyNumbere · 24/06/2026 13:55

Around £100k … all mortgage

Moochine · 24/06/2026 14:03

Unsecured debt - £10000
student loans - £21000
family loan - £500
i don’t have a mortgage (rent)

MercifulRelease · 24/06/2026 14:06

Currently £270 left on my interest-free phone loan (my old one died a couple of months ago so I had no choice) and maybe £100 on my CC which will be paid off over the next two months. That's it.

WiddlinDiddlin · 24/06/2026 14:10

Zero debt, no mortgage, no student loans, no credit card debt (we have two credit cards used for emergencies).

But I have a tiny terraced house, we don't smoke or drink, we don't go on holidays.

WhatWouldYouDo223 · 24/06/2026 14:13

Absolute nothing. That’s not to say I’ve never been, but the most was £6k from an HMRC fuck up and I saved up like hell to get rid of that. Lucky enough not to have a mortgage and everything is bought outright

alloutofcareunits · 24/06/2026 14:15

None. Paid off mortgage a couple of months ago and our cars are owned outright. I certainly haven’t always been in this position, there was a time I was afraid to open the mail because I knew I’d probably gone over my card limit.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 24/06/2026 14:15

So technically, I suppose we're in about £200k of debt, considering student loans, mortgage etc. but nobody really considers those things as "debt", especially not student loans which work more like a graduate tax for most people.

When someone says they are "in debt" they usually mean that they are in arrears on payments and struggling to pay off large credit card bills or pay day loans.

CatA27 · 24/06/2026 14:16

I dont think you an class a mortgage as debt as compared to renting not being a debt....you will have to pay that amount of rent for the rest of your life, or at least until you buy and will have nothing to show for it. With a mortgage you are paying it off and have a bought and paid for property at the end of it. To compare you would have to calculate your yearly rent and multiply by how many years you think youll be renting and count that as a debt. Even then the person with the mortgage ends up with a house, the rented doesn't. Also with student loan, you wont get foreclosed on for a student law, if you lose your job you dont pay it, most get written off after a period of time, its more a tax on your earnings than a debt.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 24/06/2026 14:21

We have no mortgage now but we are late 50s and 60s and only paid it off 4 years ago after years of over paying and then downsizing. No car loans as we don't buy expensive cars. I have a credit card debt of around £1,500 which I will pay off over a couple of months - this was holiday spending money.

I have been in debt before with overdraft and credit cards but DCs growing up and being responsible for themselves and moving out has helped with expenses. It did suck for quite a few years though!

Theyreeatingthedogs · 24/06/2026 14:21

Is this net worth? If you have loans of half a million but have ten million in investments it isn't a problem.

Violinorbanjo · 24/06/2026 14:21

Loans to use facilities or cars or education is not considered debt as a bad debt when you go and sell your mum's silver and lose it all on something and so on

ilovemybluesharpie · 24/06/2026 14:24

mortgage is never classed as debt as it is repayable over a very long period. So take the mortgage off, how much is her debt then?

I have zero debt because I only buy what I can afford and save if I want something. It is how I was brought up and how I am bringing my DD up. If you want a holiday you save, you don't put it on the card.

VeronicaRaven · 24/06/2026 14:29

Small mortgage that I could pay off but it's not worth it, the money are earning me way more in S&S ISA, I do overpay here and there but I'm not bothered about it.
Other than that I have zero debt.

rhino12345 · 24/06/2026 14:30

Including mortgages and student loans? About £420K between us as a couple.
Discounting those? Zero.
Car is bought outright, we have a credit card but it's paid in full every month. A friend of mine was over £30K in debt on credit cards and klarna and all those pay monthly type items and it literally turned my stomach (she is a good earner and seemingly 'sensible' so how she got in so much debt was a wonder!)
Many years ago, I think I was £500 in my overdraft and it literally kept me up at night worrying for weeks until I paid it off!

LeaderBee · 24/06/2026 14:31

Not counting approximately 60 grand on the mortgage? About 300 quid until i pay off the credit card in a couple of days time.

Yes exactly the same here. S&S ISA is going up faster than the house value atm so putting the 'extra' in that

hecalledmecaptain · 24/06/2026 14:32

Mortgage isn't really debt. If I wasn't paying my mortgage I'd be paying rent - slightly less each month, but nothing to show at the end of it.

I've got £6k on an interest free credit card, and about £5k in savings. DH have £9k on an interest free credit card and £20k in the bank so overall were ok.

KeyWorker · 24/06/2026 14:32

Mortgage £105,000 and car finance £11,000. No loans or credit cards etc.

Coffeecakebakes · 24/06/2026 14:34

Bemused by posts that say a mortgage is not a debt😐
A debt is a sum of money that must be repaid, on this basis I would discount student debt, because it is linked to earnings and is really a tax.

Mortgage £253,000
Car loan £14,000
Credit card £1,000
Total £374,000

Mumsnet is like an alternative universe. Shamed for even having a mortgage now 😂Literally nobody on here ever says they have debt on thread like this, yet you hardly see an old car on the road these days! The majority of people cannot ‘own’ these huge houses, fancy cars and massive summer houses popping up everywhere completely outright.

These threads tend to be a playground for those who are debt free to boast at their successes and those with debt not comment, then feel rubbish that their lives haven’t been quite so lucrative.

Im in my 40’s, married, 2 children

£208k mortgage (£70k equity)
2 cars on finance (god forbid!)
£1k on a credit card 0% which will be paid by the time it ends
on the right side of a £20k loan (don’t faint mumsnetters!)
Approx £3.5k savings

I don’t ‘like debt’ but Covid sent us an employment curve ball and we’ve spent time fixing. I’m not ashamed and seems fairly typical in my circle of friends who all unfortunately suffered sizable financial and employment loses due to covid.

We have never ever missed a payment and had a plan how to fix our situation which so far so good. We have a comfortable lifestyle, enjoy a holiday every year and our children want for nothing.

So I’m posting honestly to say don’t panic if your in a situation like we were reading these threads and feeling like the only person in the world things have gone tits up for through no fault of your own. Don’t bury your head in the sand and move forward.

Other folk, stop being so judgmental! What bloody difference does it make to you how much Joe Blogg’s credit card bill is?

Im sure your mate felt fantastic after you called her situation astronomical.

Great points.

When I had a Facebook account, someone I knew updated her post once as 'mortgage free and feeling thankful '

SO tactless .

Don't miss the BS of social media

In answer to the OP, I have a mortgage of 140k but no other debt !
