To think closing schools or making them "optional" during the heatwave is putting pressure on working parents and is just a bit silly?

This doesn't actually effect me directly as neither of my children's schools have closed.
But some of the schools iny area are either closing or are making school optional IE: it won't be marked as absence.
I mean.... Really? Do kids actually need tome off because it's hot?
And is it fair on working parents to send out an email the day before to say school is closed? This heatwave was forecast last week.
Even making it "optional" puts the pressure on as the kids will want to stay off and many of their friends will be.
I just think it's bullshit tbh

Oh bless. I love the idea of rocking up 10 minutes before the kids. I get in at 7am and start tutor time at 8.20. I prep that days lessons, answering endless emails from parents, have a meeting twice a week, get practicals ready in the mornings. I then teach all day, finishing at 3.30pm (lunch duty x 3, break duty x 2). Then it's detentions, meetings, marking, answering even more stupid emails, entering data shit etc until I'm fed up and go home.

I always find it incredible that anyone with half a brain cell can think teachers just arrive with kids and go home with them. And yes, I'm v v snippy. It's 42 degrees in my room and 72% humidity and I'm about to stuff 32 extra bodies in with me. Come join me if you think it's so lovely.

AgentJohnson · 26/06/2026 11:17

Not this bs again. If my DD was still at school, then there is no way I would have sent her in. Her classroom was unbearable when outside temperatures rose above 28, it would have been dangerous in these temperatures. Teachers jobs are to educate children, not babysit them in dangerous conditions. How much learning do you think is happening in this heat? I have been barely functioning at work and have taken frequent breaks to get some relief. I will probably be taking unnecessary trips by tram today just to escape the heat.

Is it inconvenient when schools close, absolutely but sometimes needs must.

I do not understand why so many people are so critical of teachers.
Having worked in both the NHS and schools, schools have a really tough time.
People will always be ignorant, we just have to feel sorry for their lack of awareness.

The doctors I know certainly work long hours but they don't arrive early. Chefs - are you confusing when the restaurant is open with when they start work in the kitchens? That will be part of their shift, not some voluntary thing!

They do not.
My GP arrives as the surgery opens.
Pilots arrive way before the passengers get on board and are paid for that time.
Why would chefs encroach on staff and get in the way?

GPS are usually in the surgery or on a visit much earlier than their first appointment. When do you think they do the on line triage ???

Cheeseandolivesplease · 26/06/2026 12:30

I think teachers should do exactly that tbh - all show up 10/15 before the kids come in.
See how long it is before parents/school SLT start to complain...

Cheeseandolivesplease · 26/06/2026 12:31

@mumsneedwine The major difference being they get paid from their start time, not from the time of their first appt.

Maybe because parents see some teachers coming in just before kids And at our local secondary school the car park is virtually empty by 4 pm so teachers have left.

My son’s school is doing optional pick up at 1. Any children left after 1 will be entertained by remaining staff not taught. There’s two classes with air con so those are being utilised

Same
All schools should do it next heatwave. It really does cut down on any upset all round.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 26/06/2026 12:40

@Thechaseison71 Good. Exactly how it should be.
Although I can be pretty certain that many of these teachers will also be doing some work from home.

I agree it's how it should be They well may be doing some work from home ( like many other jobs) but they are not in school 2 hours before or after.

YANBU. I’m a SAHM and I think it’s ridiculous how much people are overreacting to the heat.

@BeSunnyLemonSheep how are you coping with the heat?

Cheeseandolivesplease · 26/06/2026 12:55

@Thechaseison71 I taught in primary schools for over 22 years (recently left - best decision ever) and the vast majority of teachers were in by 8 am and didn't leave until the very earliest 4.30. Then would work evenings and weekends.
Commenting personally... I was expected in by 7.30 (would often be "moaned at" if later). My husband would drop off my two older children at secondary later (lucky he could do that - approx. 30 min drive) but I would drop off our little one to my mum's by around 7 am (again, very lucky I had this option) so I could get to work for 7.30. The end of the day - would stay until about 5.30/5.45. Would collect my litle one from my mum's at about 6pm.
I can't comment for secondaries.
Would I do it now? No.
Teachers need to push back.

Have you heard of part time ? And many staff in schools are not teachers. Oh and maybe, like me, they don't travel by car

noblegiraffe · 26/06/2026 13:04

I do most of my school work at home in my dining room. Good to know people think I should do it in school just so that my car is in the car park when they walk past.

All of them part time? Don't think so. I know 6 teachers at that school personally. And I know many staff arent teachers thanks My son works in a school

Obviously you are a teacher jumping to the defensive when I even said there was nothing wrong with it lol

It's secondary school I was referring to .

And more fool the people that stick around hours after finish tine

em2026 · 26/06/2026 13:09

Would workplaces not accept that people need the time off if the schools are closed due to red weather warnings? What do people do when their children are ill and have to work?
luckily I work in a school & my school has been closed the last 3 days, but had I not, and my children’s school was closed, I’d of had to ring in sick for those days due to being the ‘lower earner’ of the family.

Do you suppose that thinking that 'teachers arrive with the kids and leave with the kids' isn't thinking 'teachers work 9-3'? Because I have seen that an awful lot.

Well if they have left by 4pm it must be a v strange school. We haven't finished meetings or detentions by then !

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 kids finish time is not staff finish time. Do you think there is a magic prep and marking fairy. It's quite sweet the way people think at times.

DancingThroughLife02 · 26/06/2026 13:32

Honestly having just come home after fainting in front of 130 children in 35°C heat im
angry.

Multiple staff members ill by 11am today as schools and LAs just insist on staying open with no consideration to health.

But yes staying open and putting more pressure on healthcare by allowing people to get heatstroke and injuring themselves while fainting is the correct thing to do, as long as teachers aren’t getting a day off 🙄
