Cleaning as a job in the Heatwave?

Netcurtainnelly · 23/06/2026 16:26

Just wondered if your a cleaner, or have a cleaner do you work in this heat cleaning or expect your cleaner too?

Just curious. I am neither. I wondered how cleaning would be thought of in the heatwave?

I have a cleaner and yes, I'm still expecting her this week. She comes in the morning before it's too hot and we have air conditioning and fans all round the house so it should be perfectly comfortable.

If we didn't have those and she came mid-afternoon then it might be a different story.

AndrewPreview · 23/06/2026 16:30

It's not even occurred to me not to work. The world doesn't stop and I have bills to pay.

Thecatandme · 23/06/2026 16:35

I've given her the option but I expect she will come

She also works part time in a care home and she tells me that it gets very hot there.

Mufflette · 23/06/2026 16:51

Our cleaner came this morning & the house was still relatively cool. If she was coming later in the week I think we'd say leave the upstairs as it would be too hot, and if it were Friday when it's due to be 39 I would say don't come but still pay her.

NameChangeScot · 23/06/2026 16:52

I don't have a cleaner but I have had in the past. I would expect her to come yes, I'd make the house as comfortable as possible, we have fans and blackout curtains in every room. She is welcome to cancel but would not be paid if she did.
Saying that I'm in Scotland and temps are max 25/26, not as hot as further south. If schools were closed etc I might rethink.

Faceonthewrongfoot · 23/06/2026 16:54

We've got a cleaner - I'd leave it with her to decide if she was working or not - she'll happily cancel if she doesn't feel its ok to work. (She's not due til Friday when it will be cooler though, and we have fans in most rooms).

hahabahbag · 23/06/2026 16:56

It may have escaped your notice but many parts of the world have temperatures of 40+ c in summer regularly and don’t have aircon either - they still work, co to school and function more generally. Yes it’s hot for Britain (and parts of Northern Europe) but it’s 3 days really, I’m due back from holiday on Saturday and the forecast is 22 and raining! It’s meant to be 34 tomorrow where I am and I’ll be in full motorcycle gear Grin

My cleaner works six days a week and so I know she’ll be sweating it out in someone’s south-facing house this week. I told her she can skip coming here if she wants and I’ll pay her anyway, so she can move one of her afternoon cleans to my morning slot.

I know I didn’t have to, but she’s a human on very low pay so I know she’ll will force herself to work as she cannot manage the drop in income and I feel worried about her to be honest.

Lentilcakes · 23/06/2026 18:56

My cleaner is away this week but I would’ve urged her to come early if possible. I’m going to have to clean so will do it first thing …

What a lovely thing to do for somebody, so kind x

My cleaner has cancelled on me due to the heat, however our relationship is flexible on both sides and she’s coming for a brew and a catch up instead.
She cleans for us before going to her full-time cleaning role which she does in the hottest part of the day (12-8) and I don’t blame her one bit for not wanting to come! By the same token I can cancel and not pay her, it works both ways (she cancels us more due to caring commitments as well, I don’t mind because she’s a friend as well as our cleaner).

lljkk · 23/06/2026 21:28

This thread reminds me of seeing street cleaners in Vietnam. Outdoor temps were 30-40, humidity > 80%. Cleaners wore hats, long sleeves, long trousers, gloves. They just got on with it.

eyeoresancerre · 23/06/2026 21:29

I’ve just told mine not to come and will stay pay her. She’s awesome but I couldn’t have her lugging hoovers up and down stairs and cleaning in this heat - I’d feel awful.

Zanatdy · 23/06/2026 21:32

My friend was my cleaner, but she sadly is no longer with us, but i’d have paid her and told her not to come. Same as dog walker. They cannot afford to lose pay.

Booooooom · 23/06/2026 21:39

Have cancelled our cleaner for tomorrow and paid them.
School is closed here and our house gets very hot!
This is the first time I've cancelled due to hot weather though

mylifeisexams · 23/06/2026 21:41

Mine is due on Thursday but she’s usually here by 8 and leaves at 2. I might tell her she should start with the upstairs this week before it gets too hot. We have air con as well but not in all rooms. Yes, I’m definitely expecting her.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 23/06/2026 21:44

I own a glamping site and clean it myself. So yes, I have to clean in this weather. And do the garden and hot tub. There's no choice.

Fynoderee · 28/06/2026 08:16

I’m a cleaner.
I do full day monthly deep cleans.
I didn’t cancel as I have nowhere to rebook them.

Because they’re full day, there’s no option to go when the house is cooler.

Best I could do is ask people to leave curtains closed and leave door keys so I could let airflow in.

Unfortunately some rooms don’t have blinds. And one person didn’t leave keys for any of the French doors.
No one had fans. One has an AC unit but no remote control was around so I couldn’t use it.

I’m not a person who sweats heavily. But I have sweated in a way I don’t recall ever doing in 50yrs.

We’re in SW and some temps were at 38.5

Vacuuming is the worst because it’s physically the hardest part of the job plus the vac blows out hot air right next to you.

I took plenty of drinks and took regular short breaks. Tried to drink BEFORE the point I got thirsty.

I charge £190 for a full day clean so I couldn’t see anyone offering to pay me not to come!

Other countries may get hot weather but the buildings are constructed differently (aren’t wrapped up like a tea cosy to contain the heat with cavity wall and loft insulation), have shutters at all windows and hard floors that are usually swept and don’t require a hot beast of a vacuum cleaner. And many of those countries don’t have the extreme high humidity we get.

I don’t blame any cleaner who decides not to work.

If it was prolonged periods of heat, I would be firmer about working in home where all the doors and windows are locked.
