Schooltrip & parent supervision and alcohol

Went on a schooltrip as a parent helper and was shocked to see one of the other parents open a bag and open up a large bottle of Stella and drinking it in front of the kids (this was in a public playground).

AIBU in thinking this is out of order?

yanbu. presumably though the teacher/ta will have seen this and said parent will not be asked to accompany again.

Seeline · 24/06/2008 16:40

yanbu. I think that you should inform the headteacher - this is totally unacceptable!!

posieflump · 24/06/2008 16:41

what was he/she thinking?

pickie · 24/06/2008 16:42

Yes they did see it as it was hard to miss but nothing was done there and then. Would you mention it to teachers at a later stage.

Dont want to come across as a snob or gossiper (after all my DS when asked what he wanted to drink milk or water asked for beer the other day and she wasnt impressed)

TBH - is someone can't go that long without a drink then I think they probably have a problem. Inform the head so that this "helper" will not be supervising children again.

Hmm

yanbu

I'm just wondering if this parent was male or female (although that makes no diffence)

Could this really have been a need for alcohol on the part of the parent? Surely an alcoholic would be sipping something stronger. (although I'm just guessing)

Could it be a cultural thing where someone from another country is used to drinking beer with luch, and didn't realise it was inappropiare around children?

The trip leader really should have said something at the time. I'm presuming the bottle was glass, so even if it was just to point out that it is not acceptable to drink from a glass bottle in a playground.

Have just come back from DD school trip - could have done with large G&T at lunch!

In response to OP - I don't think it was appropriate. Today I saw myself as the responsible adult for my 5 charges - I needed a clear head and quick thinking.

Where was this trip?

pickie · 24/06/2008 17:28

It was a male and agree with chocolateface, an alcoholic wouldnt have done it in front of teachers/TA parents and children and probalby something stronger.

Also it wasnt during lunch it was afterwards, just walking around in the park and he was swigging the bottle.
