I’m currently in hospital awaiting an operation on Friday. It wasn’t the plan to be in this early but unfortunately I’ve got an infection and am on antibiotics.

On to the real issue

Im in a bay that has four beds, but only myself and another lady here and she has been snoring so f’in loudly I’ve never heard anything like it. I’m talking LOUD throaty snores. Constantly. Since 10pm…
it’s currently half 3 and I’ve had zero sleep.
I’ve asked to be moved to a different bay but the rest of the ward is full and there’s nothing they can do/nowhere I can go.
The nurses have even said that it’s awful and have gently woken her up and rolled her onto her side. Peace for 10 seconds and then back to the earsplitting racket.
what the hell do I do?! I can’t stay here for another 3 nights with no rest

ive got earplugs in and a blanket wrapped round my head (no, not face!)

help :(

Something that might be more effective than earplugs: lightweight headphones attached to your phone, with some calming music or white noise playing, to drown out the snores.

lordbaddingham · 23/06/2026 04:34

Yes! Noise cancelling headphones. Can somebody bring you some?

TallSturdyGirls · 23/06/2026 04:35

Have you got waxy earplugs so much better than foam? It would drive me insane.

WhatNextImScared · 23/06/2026 04:37

A headphones head wrap so you can play white noise or something gentle so it blocks out the disturbance

rageee · 23/06/2026 04:43

shes still going strong and I’ve still not slept 😳 I’ve resorted to giving her the middle finger from behind the curtain and mumbling shut up, obviously very quietly because I’m British and don’t want to be rude 🤣
I’ve only got foam earplugs and they are doing absolutely nothing.
noise cancelling headphones is a good shout although nobody to bring them to me as I’m in a hospital miles and miles away from home and no visitors for a couple of days.
I wonder if I can get an Amazon delivery to the hospital 🤔
that also means they won’t be here until tomorrow now.
What will tonight bring?!

Ask the nurses for a sleeping tablet tonight!

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 23/06/2026 05:35

Can you ask for your or her bed to be moved to the corridor? Snoring is torture!

Ilovemsrachel · 23/06/2026 05:58

Get silicone earplugs! Are there Amazon lockers at your hospital? Or send someone for them today.

You need to break them in half because they are designed for male ears (a nurse who worked nights told me this!) Work like a dream.

bolognazey · 23/06/2026 07:04

The foam ear plugs sold in WHSmiths at the hospital helped a lot when I was on a ward

hugasaurus · 23/06/2026 07:10

Earplugs in and then this type of thing with white noise playing loud over the top drowns out a lot. I went away for a volunteer event and shared a room with four other women who ALL snored and with this method I didn’t hear a thing (except when I took it off to go for a pee and the room was shaking!).

Earplugs on their own are not enough for loud snorers like this!

Dilbertian · 23/06/2026 07:17

Can you put your phone under your pillow and play an audiobook or podcast on it? If you actively listen to something, the snoring won’t grab your attention so much and you may be able to tune it out a bit. Can you lie on your side? If so, use an earplug in the exposed ear only. That way the snoring is at least slightly muffled, and the louder, more attention-grabbing noise is whatever you are choosing to listen to.

There will be a shop in the hospital. It is bound to sell earplugs - though perhaps cheaper ones, rather than really good ones. Are you mobile enough to go to it? If not, and you don’t expect visitors, can you ask a hospital volunteer or chaplain or one of the non-HCP welfare types who may be around? The ward staff should know about them.

Hope you feel better soon.

rageee · 23/06/2026 07:24

update - I’m still awake and SHE’S STILL SNORING!!! Zero sleep all night.

some great ideas - thank you. I’ll get to the shop one way or another!!
I did ask to be moved to the corridor but they said that wasn’t allowed because of health and safety (even though I’ve seen multiple people on beds in corridors!!)
I’ve also tried the phone playing in one ear and ear plug in the other to no avail.
Maybe I can deliveroo a bottle of vodka to knock me out as well!

Argh! There was a woman in my bay on the post-natal ward after I had DS who snored like a tractor. She hadn't even had a baby, was just in for observation. She woke DS up every time she did a particularly elephantine trumpet. I hadn't slept in 36 hours and could happily have murdered her. The midwives said I wasn't allowed to sleep in the kitchen when I gathered my pillow and blanket and started wheeling DS down the corridor.

frozendaisy · 23/06/2026 07:26

Hospitals are full of drugs

can they knock you out pharmaceutically?

rageee · 23/06/2026 07:38

I honestly wish I could upload a video. It’s unbelievable 🤣

if they can’t knock me out I’ll have to go to a street corner and find my own drugs!

Does the lady have sleep apnoea? My DH does and snores incredibly loudly, with deep throaty snores, waking himself up when he has temporarily stopped breathing for a second. Does it sound like she makes a kind of choking sound at the end of each snore?

So sorry you’ve had no sleep, I hope you're resting now.

Ohthatsabitshit · 23/06/2026 07:51

She’s ill and not in control of her breathing when unconscious anyway.

autumn1610 · 23/06/2026 07:52

I had the same after an operation bless her she was an old lady and she did help me get my bag when I was in bed. Had my neck cut open so felt like my head would fall off if I bent down and just felt I couldn’t physically move. Then came sleep time…after my lovely lovely drugs wore off I was in pain and she was snoring so so bad I was nearly crying. I luckily had my headphones and resorted to playing a sleep mediation so it blocked her out for a bit. If it wasn’t for the nurse waking me up in the middle of the night for my anti clotting jab I think I would have stayed asleep but no I was wide awake, in pain and wanting to smother a sweet old lady with a pillow so she would stop snoring

Foodieasfuck · 23/06/2026 07:55

That is my idea of absolute hell. How torturous! I hope things improve for you and you get some sleep soon

LondonLass2026 · 23/06/2026 08:01

You have so much of my sympathy. When I was in hospital for a week following an especially nasty asthma attack a few years ago, the two women next to me were awful. One made phone calls ALL NIGHT LONG. 'Hey! Yeah! It's me!' and then whispered and giggled. The other one watched TV all night! Her stupid family brought one in and set it up on her food table. All night long she had the Kardashians on. If you're that fucking chirpy, why are you even in hospital?

I reported both to the nurses, and they were told to stop, but would both restart as soon as the nurses' backs were turned. It was absolute torture.

I hope you get out soon and get back to normal!
