Do you think Burnham will increase taxes? If so, who will he target? Surely not the middle earners - again? AIBU to think the middle earners have had enough of this?

I thought the chancellor set taxes in the UK ?

Seems I still have a lot to learn.

Theoscargoesto · 22/06/2026 10:39

Already putting scare stories out-how is that helpful?
Maybe wait to see who puts their hat in the ring and what their policies are…..

Ablondiebutagoody · 22/06/2026 10:52

Well its not going to be low earners. Middle earners are the only group large enough to be able to raise any serious money from.

Actually Budgets have to be approved by PMs first

TemperanceWest · 22/06/2026 10:55

I would have thought the Starmer haters would be too busy celebrating to start another round of fear mongering!

SherbetDipDap · 22/06/2026 10:57

I like to think he might clamp down on corporations first.

That being said, I’m not sure we actually know who is going to be PM yet.

Friendlygingercat · 22/06/2026 11:03

More tax increases will simply result in more cash in hand side hustles with people holding up their finger to the tax man and laughing. Taxes are already too high and there is no surer way of fuelling the black economy.

Didimum · 22/06/2026 11:03

Yes! He will! Quick! Better get another PM!

HoskinsChoice · 22/06/2026 17:54

There are different rules. If we have a male prime minister and a female Chancellor, it is the chancellor's fault that taxes have gone up. On the flipside, if it is a female prime minister and a male chancellor's, it is the PM's fault. Do you see the pattern there...

(Can anyone even remember the name of the Chancellor under Liz Truss?! But we all know who Starmer's Chancellor is!).

The PM is the First Lord of the Treasury.

Fifthtimelucky · 22/06/2026 17:58

Of course we can (Kwasi Kwarteng) though to be fair he wasn’t chancellor for very long!

Define middle earner - the top 20% are not middle earners and you would have hoped that anyone earning in the top 20% bracket could understand that

millymollymoomoo · 22/06/2026 18:12

💯 taxes will go up and as always with Labour it will be private enterprise and middle incomes that are hit / all to pay bloated public sector and benefits

same old story. He’s going to be worse than Starmer - hopefully won’t last as long

The top 20% includes people earning from about ~£45k and up.

‘The rich’.

unsync · 22/06/2026 18:52

What needs to be done is grow the economy by encouraging inward investment, increasing productivity and employment. The country has still to recover from 2008, Covid and Brexit. It is time for this to be acknowledged and addressed without resorting to finger pointing and blame. Just needs to be got on with, regardless of who is in charge. A really brave politician would acknowledge this and look for cross party concensus and help in rebuilding. It won't happen in this country though - too many egos and not enough selflessness.

GeneralPeter · 22/06/2026 18:59

Strange but true: the share of our tax take paid by middle earners is lower in the UK than in most developed countries.

The real problem is: the tax burden itself is too high.

But the real, real problem is that growth has been stagnant for almost twenty years.

We are simply much poorer as a country than we should be, yet our politicians govern, and our public vote, as if we have abundant riches to redistribute.

angelos02 · 23/06/2026 10:54

£45k salary = rich? I don't think so. Stick a zero on the end and yes, then I would agree. How would raising taxes on middle earners stimulate growth? People are already avoiding paying more tax by refusing overtime, declining promotions etc. If more tax is expected, how will that stimulate growth?!

Of course he will. Probably middle earners as always.
