AIBU Schools making pupils wear blazers and jumpers in this heat

Every time it’s hot during school time, you hear of schools still insisting that their pupils wear blazers or just their jumpers. https://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/news/hull-east-yorkshire-news/kingswood-academy-send-home-defiant-121507.amp

What do schools think they are going to achieve from not relaxing the rules? Nothing. More pupils becoming ill, parents keeping their DC away.

It’s barbaric behaviour. Yet I doubt that they make the teachers, non teachers staff wear blazers and wear summer clothes with short sleeves.

I don't believe that there are schools insisting on wearing jumpers and blazers in 35 degree heat. Most don't require jumper in summer term and will remove the blazer requirement when it's predicted to be so hot. DS's school has very strict uniform requirements but allows polo shirt, blazer and tailored shorts in summer and sends emails to confirm blazers aren't required when it's very hot. I haven't seen a single kid in shorts (new option this year) but if it's going to happen, this will be the week. I might have to get handy with a needle and thread and lop off the legs on a pair of DS's trousers...

DD is having to go in in blazer, jumper and shirt today. She can remover her blazer and tie when she’s not in assembly. When she comes out of school she has to put her blazer and tie back on. Jokers. I’m really annoyed, they’re making great play of how they’ve ‘relaxed’ the rules.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 22/06/2026 07:40

Those are really old links. Do you know of any schools demanding blazers this week? I’d be really shocked if any school is demanding blazers/jumpers/tights when it’s going to be 39 degrees in some areas. Our area is forecast to hit 36 and all schools here are saying PE kit

I wouldn’t send my child into school in a jumper and blazer. That’s actually dangerous in 35+ degrees in a stuffy school. What a stupid school. What is the temperature forecast for you for this week?

MabelsBeats · 22/06/2026 07:42

Yes, ours. Must arrive in full school uniform. Full uniform for assembly. May remove blazer and tie (not jumper) at other times. Must leave the school site in full uniform.

MissSeven · 22/06/2026 07:42

I don’t know any school insisting on this and I imagine for most of those who ask for it the request is have your blazer with you, not wear it.

My dd school is in skirts/blouses this week. I would like it if they had a school baseball cap and mandated that in hot weather

MabelsBeats · 22/06/2026 07:43

Thursday looks like it will be the worst day, at 32.

Pistacheeo · 22/06/2026 07:43

Schools would save themselves a lot of hassle if they let kids wear shorts all year round (girls and boys) and PE kit in summer term. They must waste so much time on petty rules.
Adults have a say over what they wear (even in uniformed services to some degree) so children should too.

Do schools not have aircon nowadays?

Most workplaces do. Mine is often chilly - on some hot days I have to take a jacket with me to put on when I get into the office.

Dolphinnoises · 22/06/2026 07:45

I’m so grateful DD’s school has an actual sensible summer uniform - short-sleeved blouse / shirt and the skirt / trousers which while dark coloured, are quite lightweight. The school down the road has the rigmarole that blazers must be worn but may be removed once a teacher says so for the whole class. So kids still have to move around the school in a blazer.

Imaginingdragonsagain · 22/06/2026 07:45

Our secondary doesn’t do blazers or ties, and as soon as hot weather hits just says pe kit until the end of term. Also PE kit all day on pe days. Uniform policy is quite sensible.

SquirrelGG · 22/06/2026 07:46

It's madness and I really don't understand it. Where I live schools have sensible, cool, summer uniforms.

Most state schools are lucky if they have a roof that doesn’t leak.

My daughter’s school has some air conditioned classrooms, some not.

I have never worked in a school with air con! Many schools can’t afford to pay for experienced teachers (or in fact, new reading books!), let alone to install or run air conditioning!

Local schools have been very clear on social media over the weekend that pupils don’t have to wear blazers or ties and have the option to wear PE kits this week.

BravasPatatas · 22/06/2026 07:47

My DDs go to a fairly strict independent girls school but even they have been told they don’t need to wear blazers or jumpers this week.

Maybe where you. We are forecast highs of 38 on Wednesday and Thursday. And it will be much hotter than that in school, particularly in the south facing classrooms with no blinds. And the windows don’t open more than an inch in the upper story classrooms.

KeptWomanSummer · 22/06/2026 07:48

We had an email last week that jumpers and blazers are not required.

I’m expecting an update to PE kit for the week although they have sports today so in PE kit anyway thankfully.

That a crazy idea of leaving school with the full uniform! Especially schools finish at the peak temperature. How far is this from school is this enforced?

The school that my friends’ DC went to had teachers along the road where the school was located. It’s about halfway. Making sure that the uniforms were fully worn. You should not be punishing pupils outside the school grounds.

This is madness.

I know schools are obsessed with image.

Nir the image they are giving out is we care more about what our students look like than their health and emotional wellbeing.

36 forecast on Wednesday and Thursday where I am

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/06/2026 07:53

It’s ridiculous

very unusually our secondary has dropped the blazers rule this week, I don’t recall them every doing that before, for most of the year they insist on jumpers and blazers 😱

but still long trousers, shirt and tie. Bonkers in my opinion. Most workplaces are casual these days I really don’t know what they are trying to achieve. Other than misery.

Kirbert2 · 22/06/2026 07:55

My son is in primary school and they have said they can wear their PE kits this week in an attempt to keep them cooler.

plomh · 22/06/2026 07:56

I would like to see school heads and academy directors to wear jumper, tie and blazer in this weather. Especially those who have not relaxed the rules of uniform.

Jumpers and blazers year round is insane. Our secondaries have jumpers but they are optional year round and kids only tend to wear them on particularly cold winter days.

PE kit all week this week thank god.

Candleabra · 22/06/2026 07:57

I will never understand the obsession some schools have with uniform. Actually, I think it’s because it’s an easy, tangible thing to focus on to give a veneer of discipline and order. At my kids school they were obsessed with uniform, but failing the kids in almost every other way.
