DS prep school have just sent a letter about a cricket match 2-3pm on Tuesday with another school (we’re in south east it’s currently predicted 37 degrees) this is first we’ve heard of it and the letter says it is going ahead.

Their sports day is going ahead tomorrow

Are they insane?!

I don’t want to be that mum but I don’t want my child playing

Our Wednesday afternoon school cricket game has been called off. Grassroots football club have called off all training. An organised football business still running their afterschool/evening sessions.

Plantchoc · 22/06/2026 18:20

I bet that @Worriedmummy1244 has been notified now that it’s been cancelled

TheCricketers · 22/06/2026 18:29

South Africa, Australia, India… all
much hotter than the UK yet they play school cricket matches in the day time…
How do they manage? Hats, sun block, water breaks??

Piggywaspushed · 22/06/2026 18:30

Jeez, read back a bit on the thread.

You’ve never lived in any of those countries have you?

I have and the never hold matches in high summer in the middle of the day. Always early evening or very early

Oh god it's even on the same page. It's not a very long thread.

Once more with feeling: if it's over 36 degrees and above 50% humidity in Australia, they basically don't play. 31-35 with high humidity: recommendation is that sport is modified.

lifeturnsonadime · 22/06/2026 18:45

My daughter plays u18s county cricket in ECB competitions. She played today. It was hot, lots of drinks breaks etc.

She's supposed to be playing Thursday but the match is being postponed due to the red weather alert.

Safety first.

My son had played cricket all through teens and spent many a Saturday ( all afternoon and into evening) stood on cricket field in all heats inc 36c. Lots of water breaks. Never had a problem

Same here

Arcticbattle32 · 22/06/2026 19:04

My daughter’s school has already cancelled all sports fixtures for weds and thurs. My son’s school is taking it day by day but with a strong indication that PE and games won’t be going ahead as usual… No way would I have kids playing sports in 35+ degree heat. Other than being a health risk, it’s just not fun for anyone. Unless it’s swimming!

Bunnycat101 · 22/06/2026 19:19

I’ve got two in two different schools which have approached things in slightly different ways but basically consistent in not having the kids out in full sun.

prep: cancelling pe and sporting clubs and basically replacing that with swimming. Move the infants sports day into the hall. Kids were moved inside for after school care.

Primary: no outside play in full sun. Using woods where they can to play in the shade. Kids were moved inside for after school care and told they’re getting movies and lollies this week.

Neither school look like they would be allowing a cricket match to take place- both value sport.

It hasn’t been cancelled! When I expressed concern they have said they can sit him at the side instead of- am I going crazy? No one else has expressed concern in the class

You need to make a decision for your child and not worry about what the school or other parents are doing.

Have you expressed concern on the class chat @Worriedmummy1244

how do you know that no one has expressed concern?

This. You can withdraw him from the match. If you are worried, do it.

And tell them to stop being so f-ing stupid, as well. It isn't macho or clever to play sport in high temperatures. Both the running clubs I am involved with have cancelled their training this week - for both juniors and adults.

Much as though some people on MN assert to know everything about everything everywhere with 100% confidence, this is not true.
I’ve been to school cricket matches in QLD Australia in January (high summer) and they started 50 over matches mid-morning going through to tea time.

Well this school was grossly going again the index that apparently Australian schools adhere with…

My DS played an U11 match yesterday evening from 6-8pm. It was pleasantly hot to sit in as a spectator. He was ridiculously sweaty in a polyester cricket top, helmet and pads - when he finished keeping wicket he looked like he had been in the shower. I wouldn't be happy about him playing in the midday sun.

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2026 14:34

Just looked at a few websites. Compared to tennis and other summer sports, the ECB is shite about imposing actual.rules . Various counties have made their own rules. Most of them are saying no U18 matches, some are saying no B team matches. Others are clear that if the temperature exceeds 35 there is no play.

Football business have cancelled Weds and thurs now, local stables isn't letting people ride the horses.

Our patterns/house building/way of life dont work well in high temps in the UK!
