To think we can change our own light fitting?

I have a light fitting to change - currently just a bulb at the end of a flex, and I’m fitting something flush to the ceiling.

I could pay an electrician but me and/or DH should be able to this ourselves shouldn’t we? Without killing ourselves or burning down the house?

AIBU to think we can have a bash at this?

YANBU. Watch a youtube video on it first.

Depends who you are really. I could do that but I have friends who honestly are just ridiculously incapable.

Yes but switch off the relevant switch on your fuse board.. For full admission I have a man coming in tomorrow to change two light fittings that have proved problematic.

Youtube may be helpful but don’t 100% rely on it

Thanks all. I think I’ll watch some tutorials and then decide. We have little DIY experience and tend to get people in to do jobs, but we’re trying to save money.

i tried to change an extractor fan using a YouTube tutorial. Ended up getting an electrician to fix it 😆

You can do it. Second the emphasis on turning off power on fusebox first. If you do it wrong it will just trip and you will have to try again or get someone in. My daughter just done ours using YouTube. All good.

Third on mentioning the fuse box. One of mine was like a rats nest in there, if this is the case take a photo of which wires connect to your current light. I am an experienced DIY er and that one was unpleasant. Normally completely easy like changing a plug.

I rewired my first house myself aged 19 - it’s still standing 25 years on.

DH and I change light fittings without batting an eyelid.

BashfulClam · Yesterday 23:37

We’ve find al of ours apart from one where it was more complicated as it was an outside lamp so got an electrician. If you can wire a plug you can do it. Just remember to turn off the power first.

Waitingfordoggo · Yesterday 23:39

My DH does things like this- I don’t think it’s too difficult. I wouldn’t attempt it myself because I’m not very good at technical tasks like this and I’d be worried about getting it wrong and electrocuting myself 😬

If you're practical people who generally "get" practical tasks like this, it will be a breeze.
If you have a history of DIY disasters, bodge jobs and don't really understand the basics of electrical work - I'd get someone in.
