AIBU to refuse the inheritance of a house from my DH?

I first met my DH and his family while on holiday in Germany.

Back in London, we remained friendly and I became close friends with my DH’s then wife (who sadly died a few years later from surgical complications). We used to go to shopping together and I visited her in hospital while she was ill. She spoke often about her house in the country (Chiltern Hills), and wanted me to visit, but unfortunately she died before this was possible.

A few years DH and I were engaged and we married a couple of years later. The timing was convenient for me because the lease was going to be terminated (developer wanted to knock the street down to build flats) on the house I was living in with my (younger) sister, and my (younger) brother was away at uni. Both of my parents had already died and I was in my mid-30s. I moved all my furniture to the now empty house in the country, and moved in with my DH in London. My DH is considerably older than I am, but I didn’t mind.

My sister befriended a young man whom she met at a public lecture. To cut a long story short, the young man got my sister pregnant and as we were now a somewhat functional blended family, my DH’s son (my step son, who is in fact older than I am) was not at all happy about it.

In a series of bizarre coincidences, myself, my DH, my younger sister, the young man, and my step son all happened to meet at the same time at our house in the country. In an attempt to hold the young man accountable for my sister’s pregnancy, my step son assaulted the young man with a sword (an officer’s sword that was hanging above the fireplace), and tragically the young man died of a heart attack when a bookcase fell on top of him during the assault. My step son was imprisoned for manslaughter.

I have since been supporting my younger sister with her newborn and live apart from my DH. Recently, DH and his children were discussing inheritance, and he decided that he wanted to leave to me the country house (no one lives there anymore after what happened), and apparently none of the children want to inherit it (understandably).

AIBU to say No! I don’t want to inherit the murder house either?

When is the book coming out?

OP needs to sort their reflexive verbs out before they consider a book

Didn’t your Husband sleep with the dead man’s wife?

Dolly, of course we consider you one of the family, but if will be better if you don't interfere with what you don't understand.

Christ on a crystal meth binge - what is this absolute nonsense? Is it meant to be funny? Clever? What?

Fucking hell, this is more entertaining than an episode of corrie!
Inherit the 'murder' house and sell it on ..... 🙄🙄

Rondayvu · 21/06/2026 21:49

Or Thomas Hardy….. how many misfortunes can befall our heroine…

I was scrolling through skim reading and thought you had written howmany misfortunes can befall an armoire LOL

Not reflexive verbs that need sorting, but pronouns. “Myself…. all happened to meet at the house.” Wrong.

Such a terrible plot. Pop that one in the bin and start again

No one noticed how ridiculous it was at the time...

Yes sorry, I realised that when I posted! Luckily I’m not the one having a go at being a creative writer 😂

I think it’s time to find a new dealer.

Sproutling · 21/06/2026 21:57

Elsvieta · 22/06/2026 15:17

One of EM Forster's best works.

Agreed. The bookcase was a giveaway.
