AIBU to ask for heatwave coping tips / purchases that help?

I have a neuromuscular junction disorder called Myasthenia that means my body pretty much stops sending signals to my muscles the heat so I am pretty worried about next week.

So I am looking to gather all your best tips /advice /purchases!

I know someone will come and lecture about "hysteria" around the heat but it really does affect me very badly- in particular it gets scary when it causes a flare that means I cannot swallow safely

I have an air conditioner in the sitting room so I will work in there. And I know work will be happy for me to work from home (as I will rapidly get to the point I cant function otherwise). But there will still be times I have to leave my air conditioned bubble

I do have a neck fan, and some cooling neck tubes that last 30 mins or so. Spray bottles of water help a bit.

But I am sure there are other tips that might help me (or others!)

Can I ask a possibly daft question.... I have a blackout blind from when DS was little. I usually use this to try and block heat but not sure if it helps or hinders? It's not repelling heat because it's black is it?

God I feel thick sometimes. I struggle in the heat too @CassandraWebb .

It's not fun when you're struggling with illness. Lots of people will be struggling this week.

Maybe you could back it with another colour?
Am not entirely sure on the science though!

And you are right, it heat affects so many conditions.

Sending cooling breezes to anyone struggling this week!

I keep wondering about those, are they any good?

DP used one as he is out of the house in all weather and he says he doesn't know how he would cope without it. It isn't the only fan he uses, he has one of those handheld ones with the cooling plate too but with both he manages to remain active.

He has some physical disabilities that make him quite hot and sticky, and takes medication that makes him heat intolerant too, so I think it is a good testimonial.

Grit your teeth, wring a t shirt or better still, a light cotton dress in cold water, put it on and sit in front of a fan. Wet hair too. You'll be a bit chilly in minutes.

I keep wondering about those cooling towels but they seem to require some vigorous "wringing out" and I have to avoid any exertion in the heat. I would be interested to hear how well they work though!

Cool towels are AMAZING!! I don’t know what witchcraft keeps them cool but it does! When it goes warm you just grab them in each hand and tug sharply and it’s cold again!!!
Neck fans are also good
cool blanket from Amazon for nighttime

@SowWhatNowi was thinking about these, did you get them professionally installed? Do they go on the inside or the outside? How do they fare over time, and what about when the windows get cleaned?

Mine just arrived today and I love them!

I am also finding the cooling tubes really help (like a cool pack but designed to go round the neck)

I’m glad you have AC OP. I’ve just purchased one for health reasons too.

My cooling towel has arrived and is currently keeping my feet cool but I haven’t worked out the magic yet!

Professionally installed, they go on the outside of the pane. They give a slight tint to the light in the rooms but not much compared to the benefit in terms of heat. You have to clean carefully as any grit will scratch the surface (e.g. like bird poo) but otherwise low maintenance. Honestly makes so much difference.

hahabahbag · 23/06/2026 20:16

Close curtains during the day or better still hand sheets/tarps/have shutters on the outside. Keep windows closed until it’s warmer inside than outside (usually around sunset) then if possible get a through draft. Aircon however trumps these tips! (I don’t have it but thankfully I’m away)

Any links for the recommended cool towels on Amazon please?

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 23/06/2026 20:22

I was another person coming on to suggest cooling towels… I keep one around my neck like a bandana all day and it makes such a difference.

I have a cooling towel - its not towel size but wraps around neck nicely.

Just grab the ends and spin it like a skipping rope.
