AIBU to think smart shorts are fine for a graduation in heat?

Tuesday is my son’s graduation. It’s in London so supposed to be 33C. We’ve been told that it’s in a marquee so bring a fan if possible. We are obviously only guests so will be sitting with the 100’s of other parents there.
I’ve changed my outfit to a summer floaty maxi dress as original outfit was a heavier material .

DH was originally going to wear smart jeans, shoes, pale blue cotton shirt and smart blazer. With the heat, he’s going to be miserable and hot!

Would it be appropriate for him to wear a smart short sleeved shirt and shorts and he’s got a pair of deck style shoes.
He says smart shorts are not ok!

POLL:
YABU - no it’s a posh event so wear the blazer 🥵
YANBU - it’s too hot so shorts and a smart shirt are fine 😎

No one wants to see their dads legs at graduation. No blazer, better trousers, suck it up for a few hours

vincettenoir · 21/06/2026 21:03

YNBU but I guess its up to him.

Chinos. Short sleeved linen shirt. No jeans no shorts.

ByGraptharsHammer · 21/06/2026 21:07

No shorts. Amazed you asked.

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 21/06/2026 21:10

Thanks all
have suggested chinos … 🤷‍♀️
we’ve also got a 3 hr drive and the M25 to contend with

Suit trousers are usually lightweight, these and a long sleeve light cotton shirt.

Redbushteaforme · 21/06/2026 21:14

A linen suit, or at least linen trousers, would be comfortable in the heat and be far more appropriate, in my opinion.

Where shorts for the journey and then change at a service station at the end of the journey.

familyicons · 21/06/2026 21:18

Really, no one cares

MeridaBrave · 21/06/2026 21:18

I think it’s fine. No one will notice and even if they are judgey who cares you won’t see them again

Does your car not have air con?

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 21/06/2026 21:37

Get changed in the car park.

Skybluepinky · 21/06/2026 22:00

Smart light weight trousers and shirt, don’t wear shorts unless he want to appear in a what not to wear to graduation or how embarrassing can parents be TikTok videos.

Daffodilsinthespring · 21/06/2026 22:02

Smart shorts are more appropriate than jeans.

TheFairyCaravan · 21/06/2026 22:08

It was a red hot day when we went to DS2 and DDIL’s graduation. Both DH an DDIL’s dad wore chinos and a short sleeved shirt. They both took a blazer which they put on for the photos.

Strangerpings · 21/06/2026 22:14

Lightweight linen suit, if he can get one.

spstchmu · 21/06/2026 22:17

You can wear whst you want? "Not acceptable"??! There's no dress code! As in no one is going to stop you. Be comfortable for christs sake.

JustGiveMeReason · 21/06/2026 22:25

Jeans aren't smart, so that was an odd choice in the first place.

Deck shows - definitely not smart.

No need for a blazer.

I'd suggest chinos and an open necked shirt.

But, ultimately, he can wear what he wants, there are no bouncers.

Re, the drive, presumably that will be the coolest part of the day, with the car's air conditioning.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 21/06/2026 22:28

He can wear budgie smugglers in the car for all we care.

I had a 5hr journey for a funeral on the hottest day of the year with no functioning aircon. I wore whatever I wanted in the car and got changed when I got there.

ScoutOfTheSoftHeartsClub · 21/06/2026 22:31

As others have said, OP - with a long journey by car you can easily transport your event wear and change wherever’s convenient at the end of the journey.

Gettingbysomehow · 21/06/2026 22:37

No definitely not. He doesnt need a jacket just a shirt but hairy legs on show are a big no no. Trousers arent that hot. I wear trousers at work in a boiling hospital everyday. Cotton or linen will do.

concertinacornflake · 21/06/2026 22:40

Oh it's fine. No one really minds now, especially not the universities themselves. I definitely think a blazer is unnecessary. A pair of chinos and a short sleeved shirt would be fine.
I probably wouldn't go for shorts, but I don't think anyone will faint if he does wear them.

Hillarious · 21/06/2026 22:53

SoSoLong · 21/06/2026 20:56

Smart shorts is an oxymoron. Light summer trousers and short sleeve shirt is fine.

They manage to make shorts look smart in Bermuda! It does involve long socks though.

As long as the granduand follows the dress code, guests can wear whatever the graduand approves of.

If Meghan Markle can lead out the Invictus Games march in shorts, then I'd say yes, shorts are fine.
