Mid changing plugs - where is the green wire? (Pic)

rememeber changing a plug at school. Supposedly the easiest thing in the world to change. I get the idea but where is my green wire for the middle?? I’ve taken the plug off the lamp for an old fan I know works. Am I being thick?? There is a place for the wire in the plug itself

Chat gpt is no help and Google sent me down a rabbit hole that didn’t help at all

dont need it, it will be earthed in another way. Just wire the other two as normal.

Not all devices have or need a yellow/green earth wire.

Fast800goingforit · 21/06/2026 19:16

Only more powerful appliances have an earth wire. Nothing to worry about.

@GasperyJacquesRoberts @Fast800goingforit

thanks for letting me know!

This thread has some of the most dangerous advice I have ever seen. The power of an appliance has the square root of fuck all to do with earthing requirements. Double-insulated appliances do not require earthing so the fan casing must be plastic throughout, thats why there is just the 2 wires. Just connect the brown to live and blue to neutral OP and you'll be fine. Earthing is all about exposed metal parts the could become live in the event of a fault - stops people being electrocuted.

Somersetbaker · 21/06/2026 20:16

And this is why all appliances are sold with moulded plugs now. The only good thing here is that your plug has 3A fuse in it.

What I posted might be wrong, but it's not dangerous. There are clearly only two wires.

The fact you've just said that really, truly scares me. Appliances that have metal parts that someone could touch MUST be earthed, no ifs, no buts. In OPs case, the fan will be fully plastic-cased so the earthing is not required, it is nothing to do with power rating.

Yes but the appliance presumably would have an earth wire if it needed one. The fact it only has live and neutral indicates it doesn't. It's not as if the OP can magic up an earth wire when there isn't one there. What would you expect her to do? Throw the fan out to be on the safe side? Let's assume this is an appliance that meets British safety standards so if there's no Earth wire it doesn't need one.

I think the issue is that it isn't dangerous in this case, but someone could come along and read your post and think that any less powerful device doesn't need an earth.

HisNibs · 21/06/2026 23:33

@Lougle exactly this.

Then why did you not post that instead?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/06/2026 05:35

So a simple question degenerates into a bit of a squabble... It wasn't like this before Brexit... and Covid of course.

Filler44 · 22/06/2026 05:35

An appliance that is double insulated will have an icon of a square inside a square on it.
