To still be upset about this dreadful driver?

Mr net Curtain and I were driving down a country road on Friday and realised we were being tailgated.
I looked round and the driver was featuring us to go faster. We did not as we were already driving to the speed of the road

We just ignored him and carried on. Next thing he or someone behind him starts blasting the horn furiously obviously trying to get us to go faster
We did not eventually the driver turned off

It really unnerved me and made me nervous. I can't believe that people are prepared to cause a crash on a road just because they want you to hurry up.

Has this happened to anyone else? have experienced tailgaters before but never someone blasting their horn etc. So dangerous.

If two separate drivers were frustrated with your speed I’d spring a guess that you were probably going slower than necessary.

I was in Cornwall recently and I was surprised at the amount of narrow, windy country roads with a speed limit of 60. There’s no was you could do 60 safely on a dual carriageway wide enough for one car with a passing space here and there.

It really messes up using the sat nav. The sat nav assumes that you can drive at around 60 on a 60 road. Not 30. So the ETA is askew.

i grew up in Cornwall but learnt to drive up north and the driving instructor said turn into a country road so I slammed on the breaks and creeped along at 30 and it was the widest straightest country road ever.

There must be a typo here.

I was driving home from the supermarket yesterday behind a driver who seemed oblivious of the 40mph speed limit for much of the way. He never went above 28. At one point the car behind me made to overtake on one of the 40 stretches then realised the hold up was the car in front of me rather than me. It was unnecessary to be so slow. Parts of the route are busy and parts have parked cars, but there's no excuse for never getting up to the road speed.

why were you not leaving a big enough space between you and the slow car for the car behind you to overtake?....or perhaps you were?

Dymaxion · 21/06/2026 21:08

They shouldn't be tailgating

Because it's illegal ?

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 21/06/2026 21:13

YANBU I live rurally and the problem of speeding drivers particularly at weekends has increased significantly. There are cases of individuals flying up behind and tailgating because they think it’s funny. Some of the narrow lanes I have stopped walking the dog along because I have had too many near misses on the blind bends. Just to go to the village shop is like going out to fight a bloody battle which is why I drive a beaten up old car now. Don’t know what’s got into people it’s bloody stupidity. It only takes one of the big tractors to come round the corner and things turn seriously horrible.

Not at all. Drivers are ridiculously impatient and I have been overtaken more than once doing 30 in a 30 limit. I wouldn't have the nerve to do that.

Also try riding a bike and watching drivers lose their minds behind you.

All that said OP if you are this upset about a bad driver, you are going to be upset an awful lot.

Or being deliberately tailgated by idiots for a laugh as it happens a lot on the lanes. It’s quite scary

When drivers get too close to me I was advised by a nice policeman to just pull over as soon as it’s safe and let them pass. I don’t need the agitation or stress, and a 30 second delay makes no difference to my journey. If others want to speed that’s up to them. I don’t understand why you insisted on letting the driver sit on your tail tbh. Sorry op, I know it’s upsetting when others are idiots on the road.

I put my hazards on, slow right down and pull over - it’s nearly the same thing but also winds them up a bit too, which I know is extremely petty.

I watched instant karma unfold when my mum was tailgated by a young guy in a 30. He couldn’t wait, so flew past, and guess who was waiting just out of sight? Yep, you guessed it - a police officer with a speed gun who waved him to pull over. We did LOL.

Dymaxion · 21/06/2026 21:24

It just seems such a silly way to lose your licence, 3 points for being an impatient knob, a few times forgetting what the speed limit is and bam, bye bye licence. Its almost like it would be worthwhile chilling and hanging back for a short while ?

Soonbbbqweather · 21/06/2026 21:26

When I drive where DD lives the limit is much faster than I’m used to. I view the limit as the maximum and when I have DGD in the car I drive a little under the limit. If I get tailgated I wait for a gateway and pull over. The particular road is notorious for accidents - occasional fatalities- and I don’t want either of us to either have one or end up dead.

DandelionClockSeeds · 21/06/2026 21:31

The people who annoy me are the ones that pootle along at 45 in the NSL (which I sort of get when you don't know the road) BUT then carry on at 45 when they hit the 30 limit at the edge of town.

Never a reason for tailgating and aggressive behavior tho, whatever the speed.

BringBackCatsEyes · 21/06/2026 21:33

Country roads are often National Speed Limit = 60mph.
It's not often 60mph would be the safe speed to drive on them though.

Anyway, if someone is too close to me I either slow down, hopefully indicating they are too close, or I pull over and let them past.
If I was sure my driving was no the problem then I would consider that they might have an emergency. Obviously, that's not a excuse to speed, but I guess if you had a bleeding child on the back seat you would.

My mum did this, the road was a safer place when she stopped driving!

Caterina99 · 21/06/2026 21:47

I live rurally and some people drive like absolute nutters.

I got overtaken on a blind bend before, and I wasn’t going particularly slowly, about 50. I get it’s frustrating being stuck behind someone slow, but there’s no need for beeping and tailgating!

Just pull over when you can OP, it’s the best option

ScrollingLeaves · 21/06/2026 21:50

ScrambledEggs12 · 21/06/2026 20:42

She said she was 'driving to the speed of the road'. That is not the same as what is allowed (which would be 60mph), which is why many people are asking what speed she was driving.

You can’t say “It would be 60”. You don’t know.

Where I live country roads have varying speeds depending on dangers.

Fair enough, they don't where I live.

SereneFinch · 21/06/2026 18:43

It doesn’t matter what speed she was driving. It’s not acceptable to tailgate and blast your horn at people to try and make them go faster.

Depends if they were driving like a granny

southofscotland · 21/06/2026 22:02

Aggressive overtaking, slamming on the horn etc is never excusable but it makes my blood boil when people don’t know how to drive their own car, go way too slowly on NSL roads or can’t pass others on country lanes because they think their car is 3ft wider than it is. If people are desperate to go faster than you, let them pass - it’s far less hassle for you for the rest of your journey.

Isitevensummer · 21/06/2026 22:07

I drive on a lot of very rural roads and some driving I see is truly shocking. I have seen many many written off cars along the roads I drive regularly, and I can see why As someone said up thread, just because you technically can go at 60, does not mean you should - the idea of driving to the conditions seems to be alien to some people. I do occasionally get frustrated when stuck behind someone doing 30 or 40, but I reign it in, because they are not easy roads to drive and you have to be safe, so if that means going slower, I have to just get on with things.

i can guarantee I’ll have numerous people overtake me tomorrow. I’m not going slow, I’m driving the speed limit
the road I use is a dual carriageway separated with barriers but it’s a 40mph. Most people do 50-60 along it and I need to be in the right lane to turn, but people get pissed off as they can’t then overtake me

I don’t know what else I can do, I won’t break the speed limit

ScrollingLeaves · 21/06/2026 22:32

RAC information about driving on country roads excerpt :

The speed limit on country roads in the UK is often the national speed limit of 60 mph. This is defined by the white, circular sign with a thick black diagonal line

Of course there are other speed limits that will be displayed by the red and white signs with a number on – and you should adhere to these where instructed

Although there are long stretches of single-carriageway, tight, national speed limit roads in rural areas, it is advisable to drive slower due to the various risks you will face.

Don’t treat the speed limits as a target, as this is often not a safe speed to be travelling at. Whether you are learning to drive, recently passed, or are looking at taking your next trip down some country roads – be aware of your cars stopping distance in relation to the speed you are travelling.

This guide will look at the dangers you could face on the roads, but a car’s stopping distance is an important factor in all of them.

I live down a lane that is national limits, you’d die if you drove at 60.

What relevance is that to my post?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/06/2026 19:38

OP said she was driving at the speed limit.

Problem with that statement is that OP is doing what they believe to be the speed limit.

Round here a lot of people are steadfastly driving at 29 presumably in the sure and certain knowledge they're in a 30.

Sometimes, though, they're in a 50

And that does get annoying tbh

Gunz · 21/06/2026 23:44

I just pull over and let them pass. You can sense the agitation by the way they drive right up your arse. Far safer IMHO.
