Help me survive this week’s heatwave

Not really an AIBU, posting for traffic. In brief: I usually work (in home office) and sleep on the third floor of my house (kids are on second floor), but the third floor becomes unbearable above about 27 degrees, which of course is becoming an issue with increasingly hot summers. We’re also unfortunately near a busy road which makes opening the window unpleasant (didn’t used to be like this but has become busier over time).

I’m looking into permanent air con, but I have a work deadline this week and need to be able to sleep and work. May be able to work in the local public library which has air con, but I need to be able to sleep!! Hit me with your best recs for portable air con units and/or light roll up mattresses that I can use to sleep temporarily on the ground floor and/or anything else? Am I right to think portable air con units will all have a hose that needs to go out an open window? In which case, unfortunately, it’s not a great solution for my house due to traffic noise. Very open and grateful for any proposed short-term solutions…

If you freeze your hot water bottle repeatedly, don't use it for hot water in future as it weakens the rubber and can lead to splitting. You can buy cold packs online which are specifically designed for repeated freezing. Just wrap them in pillowcases and take to bed with you or wherever you need them.

Bamboo satin pillowcases and sheets.

There are some really good freestanding fans on Amazon which have a cooling effect despite not being air conditioning units. They're best on a low setting blowing air straight at you, but you might find that they help cool the room down very slightly.

Came here to say this. Best idea, if you want to do the hot/cold water bottle thing is to have two separate ones (different colours so you remember which is which - maybe red and blue).

You do not want to risk damaging the bottle rubber or the seal - could be disastrous when filling with boiling water in the winter.

Hire aircon unit for the wk. Pricey but so worth it

I live in a three storey house and you won’t be able to sleep on the top floor. My son hasn’t been able to for about a month now as it gets so hot. Just move your mattress onto ground floor and sleep there.

alternatively hang a sheet on the outside of your windows to stop the sun directly hitting the window. That will take and edge off and help it generally be cooler but you still won’t be able to sleep there.

Completely sold out now, sorry but the delonghi pinguino air conditioner has been transformative for our room. Yes it does need to be vented out a window but once set up its ability to cool the room provides a cool haven.

I’m no longer apprehensive when hot weather is forecast.

When we got it, a good few years ago, the weather broke on the very day it was delivered. Kicked myself at the time but now it’s so good to know it’s available when needed

Oooh now this is interesting! Who did you rent it from @easterb?

Thanks to everyone for the recs!

It was these people. It looking at their website now they have much less on offer than they did when I looked. But might be worth calling them.

The delivery man didn’t bring it up the stairs - had to prevail on male friends to help…no way I could have done it myself!

Thanks so much - I’d had no idea they were something you could hire. It looks like that service is in London unfortunately, but I’ll have a search to see if I can find one closer to me.

Cooling mats made for dogs! £12 in pets at home. My daughter really wanted one and she has been sleeping with it over her. It also has a nice bit of weight so is relaxing too. I think I might borrow it and take it to work tomorrow (school, no air con)

Yes, I noticed the Meaco fans someone mentioned have gone up in price too. Naked Profiteering at its finest.

Tepid shower before bed, wet your scalp. Don't towel dry just wrap a sheet around you lie down and let the water evaporate.

Sleep on the sofa on the ground floor.
