Why do Brits boil everything ?

I’m European but not British. I have to say the way you guys cook (vegetables in particular) ie boiling everything) really isn’t for me. It just makes everything so bland even if you add butter and salt after. Carrots especially. Why not roast or lightly sautee in a pan with some olive oil? My husband boils everything. I’ve never seen anything like it. Why boil carrots? Same as ILs. The first time I met ILs we had poached chicken. It’s so weird to me. Is it a health thing?

We Spanish people boil potatoes for our 'Russian salad', and boil vegetables in stock for our stews, which are very popular dishes.
Parboiling carrots and potatoes makes roasting easier and better. I'm glad I learnt that when I arrived in the UK.
Boiling is fine for many recipes.

People seem to be getting more aggrieved and reactive about a generalisation based on a tiny sample size.

Which people, me? I’m not aggrieved, I find it tedious.

HTH.

sweep statements about “British People” boils my piss

does that count?

nomas · 21/06/2026 18:39

I don’t know anyone who boils beg, except potatoes for roasties and cauliflower for cauliflower cheese.

I low carb so instead of bread I have broccoli stems or green beans or asparagus - all steamed or lightly sautéd in olive oil.

I also don’t get why everything needs to be parboiled.

It doesn't. The only thing I parboil is potatoes before roasting them.
Working class people boil everything. Middle class people roast or pan fry. Is your husband from a poor background

I par boil potatoes before roasting - same with other root veg because the end result is more tender.

GoldenGail · 21/06/2026 18:39

Britain is 4 different nations so don’t lump us all together as one . Having said that everyone of my age in Scotland I know boils the fuck out of everything especially vegetables

Vegetables are nicer boiled, why does everything have to have fat on it? There's nothing nicer than a crisply boiled Brussel sprout or carrot. It balances out all the fattiness of a roast.

If you were having sausages, mash and gravy you wouldn't want carrots or green beans cooked in fat. You'd want nice fresh boiled carrots or beans with a sprinkling of sea salt. Delicious.

agree but steaming is better 👍

Wow.

Moonlightfrog · 21/06/2026 18:42

To be fair OP is kind of correct. We do boil a lot of things, though I would never poach chicken. I do roast and stir fry some times but frying usually involves some kind of fat/oil which I don’t feel is healthy to eat all of the time.I don’t think boiled veg is tasteless, as long as it’s not over cooked.

Therescathairinmybath · 21/06/2026 18:43

Well how else would I cook boil in the bag fish?

Respectfully, that’s pretty chippy. You’re proving my point.

boiled potatoes are just very unusual to me

How do you make:
mash
potato salad

luckymumandnowluckygranny · 21/06/2026 18:45

We don't.

Maybe they’re doing it badly so you’ll take over? I swear my DH loads the dishwasher badly so I’ll take over. I’m also wondering if your DH has 80 yr old parents and was a child of the 70’s as boiling was a thing back then!! I don’t think I’ve ever boiled veg other than potatoes for mash or peas.

@Lotc Oh my goodness. You’ve never been overseas. So many countries serve ‘boiled potatoes’- awful but they do!!

Mmmmmmm...ok you're correct 😂

Everyone doesn't boil everything. Just people you come into contact with.

Edited

Respectfully, zero point proved other than you being one of those posters that respond with a pointless response to my comment and managing to make a mountain out of a molehill. I’m bored now so won’t reply again, would be amazing if you could respectfully move along too.

Im European and I love boiled vegetables! It’s a great salad. Potato and courgette, don’t boil them too much, let them cool down, extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper - love ❤️

inappropriateraspberry · 21/06/2026 19:01

I’m British and rarely boil veg. It’s either sautéed/fried or roasted. I hate big standard boiled vegetables.

Emeraldforest · 21/06/2026 19:01

I do mine in the microwave in a very tiny bit of water. I don't know any British person who just boils everything, we have moved on since then.

MissFancyDay · 21/06/2026 19:03

If you don't boil your veg how do you make gravy?

Actually don't bother answering, it's just nicer with boiled cabbage water.

TwoBagsOfCompost · 21/06/2026 19:03

Lotc · 20/06/2026 12:04

Not at all unusual to me and I’m not British, so it looks you’re not only generalising about the Brits vegetable boiling habits, but also about EU ones too 😬

HandMadeInYorkshire · 21/06/2026 19:09

What are you talking about?
We boil, we roast, we poach, we grill, we babaque. Generalising a total nation on your very narrow experience is excruciating to read.
