Just that really. It's too hot to have my long thick hair down, but anytime I wear it up I cannot help feeling I look like Miss Trunchbull. Does anyone have any advice?

miss trench all is what comes to mind when I wear my hair in a bun, especially when I’m ina. grey sweatshirt. Also that little woman from the cartoon the Moomins.

Jamesblonde2 · 20/06/2026 18:39

Overweight usually means a thick neck. Equates to Ms T. Slim, longer neck and you won’t be Ms T.

Allseeingallknowing · 20/06/2026 19:02

It’s bitch bun round here- you don’t argue with them!

Strokethefurrywall · 20/06/2026 19:30

Oi! Don’t diss Trunchbull, she’s a style icon!

downloadtoad · 20/06/2026 19:43

I understand, I feel like fucking golum with my hair flat to my head 😂

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 20/06/2026 19:44

Good bone structure and/or make up. A chunky and make up free face will give you the full Miss T look.

The classism in this thread is awful

Clarabellemt · 20/06/2026 19:46

I have an undercut because my hair is so thick and this helps me stay cooler. The only trouble is that it looks terrible if I wear the rest of it up because the bun is pathetic. My secret weapon is a messy bun scrunchie. Chep enough on Amazon. Looks like a lot more effort was made that I am capable of doing. I do pull a little out at the front to frame my face.

EveryDayisFriday · 20/06/2026 19:52

I do a looser bun and big earrings to avoid this.

Whyyes · 20/06/2026 20:41

I just look like miss Trunchbull. Not bothered. Oh well

anon666 · 20/06/2026 23:18

Lol, I just go with the "trunchbull" look. 🤣 My mum positively hates it when I wear my hair up. I see her point, I've got a horrible shaped head and a thick, short neck. My hair is lovely. Shiny, brown, thick wavy hair. It hides the above multitude of sins. But I simply cba, especially in hot weather. It gets scraped up into a bun, which i will now think of as "the trunchbull" 😆😆

OrdinaryGirl · 20/06/2026 23:25

In fairness Miss Trunchbull had a very powerful vibe, fully connected to utility chic and had a real commitment to classroom discipline so I kind of admire her energy.
I would add that the line, ‘Your mummy’s a TWIT’ is iconic and please don’t pretend you have not longed to bellow it at least once in your life.

Like this… google 50’s up do.

Good grief

The Trunchbull look comes about by scraping your hair straight back without going for lift and volume.

Step one - bend forward, head towards your knees with hair hanging vertically downwards. Brush it in that position until smooth.

Step two - Spinkle a tiny amount of got2b powderfull or similar volume boost powder onto your hands and run your hands through to the roots (head still upside down)

Step three - Stand up and toss your head back in one smooth movement. You will now look like you have been electrocuted. Now gently gather your hair back and smooth it to a slightly less dramatic size without pulling or brushing too vigorously, you want to retain a sensible amount of volume at this point.

Twist around into a spiral and clip into place - a barrette type hair clip is best for having a good firm hold without the scrape-back tension that createa the Trunchbull look.

My daughter (aged 5 going on 14!) has long thick curly hair that really should have it's own Fb page 😍 - most people's dreams but hard work for me as her Mum! We like to plait it (regular or Elsa style), or do a half up half down. On ladies (as opposed to children) I think a chignon or french braid won't ever look out of place!

ClockBabyD · 21/06/2026 06:18

I'm afraid you either look like Miss Trunchbull or you don't. What a strange question.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 21/06/2026 07:21

Look.at Premier League footballers for inspiration with their man buns and their stylist designed pony tails.

Think Erling Haaland has the most beautiful silky blind hair ,and pony tail.

Thank you for the comments that matched my humour, and for the comments that offered helpful advice too. 🙂

I had a crappy day after I had posted this yesterday and completely forgot to return to the thread and check replies so apologies for the delay in returning.

Thanks Miss Trunchbull.

Twist it into a bun using a nice silk large scrunchie. Takes 10 seconds and looks like a proper hairstyle. Pony tails I find so hard

Shortpoet · 21/06/2026 13:32

I’ve cut my hair short now. But I used to use a Pony- o, which has a flat bendy copper centre. It gives your ponytail body and makes it look fuller as the ponytail is held wide and flat rather than in a tight circle.
also in e your hair is up. Pull the hair going in so it is slightly looser so it’s not slicked back against your head and looks softer
