To be surprised my Dsis doesn't know about the wipe fold wipe method?

My DParents were frugal; War babies both, they always lived to save resources and money.

They taught me the wipe fold over and then wipe again method to save (granted a small amount) of loo roll.

Last week we were reminiscing about their asceticism and I mentioned this and how I still adhered to this (even more so in the heady days of Covid).

She denied all knowledge of the system!

How coukd this be? Confused

I use rags on a stick. Like the Romans

Joking apart but a combination of a great age and a bad back has had me thinking that the Romans knew a thing or two!

The Romans also used pine cones!

I have a good supply of pine cones. I'm not sure my botty or the sewerage system would thank me though!

And the parasites?

In the 70s there were shortages. I clearly remember the toilet roll being kept on the teacher’s desk. You went to get your allowance and had to manage. I remember being most perturbed. I would have been 5.

I never pooed in school so I would’ve been fine 😝
I didn’t poo outside the house or in a hotel on holiday until I was 20 and went travelling!!!

I just get the strip of loo roll and start at one end and wipe and fold it in itself as I work through the strip…I’ve been doing it that way for years and I’m now approaching 30. Am I doing it wrong?

Friendlygingercat · 20/06/2026 15:58

I grew up in a poor 1950s house where we used newspaper. The Liverpool Echo to be precise. When it got damp the print came off on your ass ..... When I began full time work I bought my own toilet roll and kept it in my bag otherwise my sister pinched it.

Yes!! In all my years here finally a question I can answer! I have never, ever, EVER folded loo roll, always a Pom Pom or scrunch.

Basically, you pull a few sheets off with abundance, scrunch them up and wipe and drop the scrunch in the toilet.

Then you repeat a couple of times (Not too tight a scrunch mind, a loose one).

On about the third or fourth scrunch and wipe you discretely have a little check to see if it’s coming away clean. If it is, you progress to a moist toilet tissue for a final little freshen up.

And - FLUSH, praying the mound of poo and toilet paper safely makes it way down.

Well thank you for that detailed explanation!

I'm a boring fibre obsessed health nut so the first wipe comes away clean 95% of the time. Kind of sad I'll never need to try a pom pom.

And the parasites?

They can use the same!

I can imagine this in the days of hard Bronco and whatever the other was, but not now. And to put it delicately, how much loo roll you need is largely jgoing to depend on how much residue you have to deal with.

Oh god yes, that crunchy stuff like greaseproof my granny used to have. Not in the slightest bit absorbent, I hated going to the loo there !

UniquePinkSwan · 20/06/2026 17:14

Never heard of it and not doing it

😂😂😂

I’ve never heard of this double folding malarkey, I can’t imagine going in for another go with slightly used paper ?
We did have a house with a bidet once and I actually thought it was great! Especially for us 4 menstruating ladies !

Sounds wasteful to me. You use much less paper with the fold method.

Maybe so, but the wipe is better, I don't care that a bit of extra bog roll goes down the pan!
