AIBU to wonder why people wear coats in hot weather and complain about being hot

It’s the start of a week plus of warm weather. Yet still see people wearing jumpers and coats complaining about they are hot.
Erm why not just take off your coats and jumpers?

I think some people it’s automatic pilot to put a coat on when going out.

For most of my life I stopped wearing a coat as soon as weather allowed it. And I found often i was the only person walking around the streets without a coat! A combination of getting older and now living in a coastal town with often biting winds means I wear coats more now than I did.

But it never ceases to amaze me how much people cling to wearing warm clothing. Even in winter the amount of layers people wear surprises me - i never wear a jumper AND a coat unless it's extreme weather conditions.

OMG this! How do people wear so many clothes! I'm in as few clothes I can get away with personally I hate being restricted even in winter. If I think I don't have to wear a coat I won't! Same with people in jeans and it's 30 degrees. Get your shorts on 🤣 why are we so scared of what other people think?
All people do is moan all winter, it's too cold, I'm sick of this weather then you see them in the middle of July in the exact same clothes they wore in January 🤣

Not everyone feels hot. I tend to feel cold even when it’s warm, so I do tend to take a cardi or light jacket out with me. But I’d take them off if it was really warm. My mum said I’d be sat in the garden on hot days with a blanket on 😊

Are these people in Year 9? As I’m wondering how hot it has to get before some of the boys will leave their coats at home …

MegMortimer · 19/06/2026 07:42

I imagine that they don't trust the British weather. It might be hot one minute and cool and raining the next. Maybe they were caught out one time too many.

BlackCat14 · 19/06/2026 07:46

Oh god I know, I’ve been wearing dresses for weeks now, even on the days it’s not been sunny hot, I still find it so warm.

My MIL popped round to get something the other day wearing black skinny jeans and a navy fluffy jumper. I was sweating just looking at her. In the 5-10 minutes she was at our house she must have said eight times how hot was. I just don’t get it 🤣

From my observations, it appears that they wear their coats in high summer and on those wet autumnal days when it's pissing it down go out in just a jumper which then gets soaking wet. Makes no sense.

But this is the second thread I've seen in the last few days about dressing for the weather or not and it just confuses me that there appears to be people do don't consider the weather and suitable clothing/coats when going outside. It seems that every time we leave the house there's the checking of weather apps and a look at the sky before coats are chosen, either to wear or take just in case.

Brightbluesomething · 19/06/2026 08:03

Because we’re British. It might be roasting hot now, and it might thunderstorm later.
If the weather could make up its mind and just be consistent it’s a lot easier to dress appropriately. But no. We’re having all 4 seasons in a day.

Im late diagnosed autistic and never understood why I did.

But having worn one yesterday in 22* heat whilst wearing a long sleeve polo blouse, thick cardigan as well and sweating like he'll. I realised I do it to make my world safer/less harsh and to help me regulate. Once id regulated from a prickly hedgeohg on fire to a more usual version of me pretending to be human j managed to take off my thick cardigan long sleeve top and just wear my blouse but it took me 2 hours to get there

muddyford · 19/06/2026 08:08

The same people that moan about being cold or wet whilst clad in a T-shirt.

Prombles · 19/06/2026 08:08

The opposite in a way, but my husband and I were on a coach on a damp, not very warm day. The coach itself was lovely and warm. Someone then complained the coach was too hot, and the driver turned the air con up - we had to put our coats on. Fair enough, different people have different sensitivities - but what pissed us off was that the group who'd complained it was too hot started putting coats and blankets around themselves as soon as it cooled.

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 19/06/2026 08:09

Is this one weird person annoying you? I don’t really see this much. More often people wearing too few clothes and complaining about being cold!

Deliaskis · 19/06/2026 08:09

Because it's not that hot
Because there's a breeze
Because you often can't dress perfectly for everything you're going to do in a day, e.g. air conditioned offices versus walking out to lunch, sitting watching child do sport versus travelling to or getting ready for sport.

LittleRobins · 19/06/2026 08:19

I’m autistic and hate bare skin open to the air. I need layers on. That said I accept my choice and don’t complain about feeling hot.

I also used to self-harm as a teenager and wore long sleeves to cover this.

People live all sorts of different lives in different ways to you. Let them live, it’s not hurting you.
