AIBU to think the European Parliament chanting was disgraceful?

Hi everyone,I’ve just seen the footage coming out of the European Parliament following the vote on the new Return of Migrants law, and I’m honestly a bit stunned by the behavior of the politicians.

The new measures passed with 418 MEPs voting in favor (and 218 against). Immediately after the result was announced, right-wing and conservative MEPs began chanting "send them back" across the chamber. Left-wing MEPs then started shouting "shame on you" in response.

It felt incredibly polarized and quite shocking to watch people in business suits acting like they are at a football match over something as serious as deportation and human rights.

You can see the video of how it played out on

I’m curious to know what everyone else thinks. Is this just the reality of how passionate politicians are about border control now, or has a line been crossed in terms of basic parliamentary decency?

AIBU (Am I Being Unreasonable) to think this behavior is disgraceful regardless of how you feel about the actual legislation?

I've not heard of it happening in the EU parliament before but that sort of thing happens all the time in the UK parliament. Maybe campaign for that to be sorted first.

I understand the Shame on you response.

I can also understand voting for the legislation but the "send them back" chanting is pretty shocking.

I wonder how this will affect the UK?

Even if you acknowledge that it’s not feasible to accept all would be asylum seekers (for myriad reasons) the callousness of the right-wing MPs is disturbing.
These are still people being discussed.

I don’t find it shocking, but then politicians in my home country aren’t averse to throwing smoke grenades, and fists, at one another during parliamentary sessions. I believe it’s got physical in the European Parliament a few times too. Chanting, whilst not ideal, isn’t something I’d consider outrageous.
