Cost of living. Teens with no jobs

The whole COL crisis is exacerbated by huge supermarket chains (one example) who are making huge profits. They don't employ as many young people (automation) so the cost of the kid's needs falls on the parents who have huge bills themselves.
I always had a Saturday or evening job.
Businesses aren't hiring nearly as much as 30 years ago.

And the last sentence is why sixth-formers can no longer get work. Back in the day, you would be recruited by Iceland to work every Saturday 9-6. That's it.

But now flexibility to be available to cover a wide variety of (changing?) shifts is key to recruitment decisions. And those at school/college can't give that flexibility. It's rare to see a "8 hour Saturday shift" advertised anywhere now.

No, it doesn’t mean that.

We offer part time shifts starting from 7.5 hours.

And weekends are where we need the flexibility. Someone who can work Saturdays is far more likely to be offered a role than someone who can only work on a Wednesday.

Well that's great, but is not what your post said ("The more flexible you are to work different days, the more likely you are to get a job with us.")

My post didn’t say what you claimed either….

Please help me out then, what did you mean by "The more flexible you are to work different days, the more likely you are to get a job with us" mean in relation to how easy (or otherwise) it is for sixth-formers to get a job?

But they still want the cheaper food and other groceries supermarkets sell.

Level1469 · Yesterday 18:37

They have no choice, BrookStreamRiverlet. Plus you get what you pay for and have no control over quality.

People have lost the housekeeping skills their grandmothers had. Like hell would my gran have paid 12.50 for a shrinkwrapped piece of meat from god knows where, sold by a beeping machine with zero human interaction except to take the antitheft tag off.

Hate supermarkets and wouldn't want my teen working in one, people think this is normal but it's a horrible way to live.

Allonthesametrain · Yesterday 19:26

A couple of teens put out a post offering garden services, basics such as mowing, weeding, cleaning up. They were inundated with offers and people admired their initiative. They're doing brilliantly, post their work and getting great reviews. Xxx

And nobody gives a shit about you talking bullshit about things you clearly have no clue about.

You are incorrect. Suck it up buttercup.

Ok I’ll enlighten you.

If you want full time hours, then the more flexible you are to work on different days, the better.

If you want part time hours, the more flexible you are to work weekends, the better.

No it isn’t claiming avocados are carrots. Staff are still on the shop floor restocking shelves or picking internet orders. They have been told not to intervene - I guess because an injury claim by staff would be a lot higher than the lost groceries. Some of it is apparently incredibly blatant - gangs just pushing full trolleys out past the checkouts and the people staffing them.

Gangs doing that would still do if checkouts were all manned - it's not self service checkouts.

Yeah, pay £1 for a branded bottle of bleach in Tesco, or nearly £3 for the same in a local shop.

Classic!

Beautifully proving my point about the IQ and horrible manners of many supermarket staff.

Not necessarily. They are getting the jobs because hirers of the same ethnicity are exploiting the rule of "if you can't find someone in the UK who can do this, you are allowed to sponsor a foreigner on a work visa". So the boss, after rejecting all local candidates, says "Boo hoo, I can't find anyone ... so I'll bring in my cousin's mate from Bangalore".
It's not just the UK. This has been happening wholesale in Silicon Valley for years now. Pretty please, do your basic research before you make these assertions on the delusional assumption that all Mumsnetters are as disingenuous as you are.

Imagine if people of English origin did this

it has all gone very wrong

So your concluding sentence I was commenting on (that Iceland looks for "flexibility to work different days") only applies to those looking for full-time work, and not the sixth-formers this thread is talking about. That wasn't clear to me.

Exactly
And want the other products cheaper online delivered to their house

Collectively as consumers we all play a part in the decline of the high street. Supermarkets didn’t help but they didn’t destroy the high street not like Amazon has. Before online the high street adapted, smaller shops sold what the supermarkets didn’t.

But versus the price and convenience of online.

And who doesn’t shop online, look about for the best price, especially bigger purchases even if you go to a store to actually buy it. If you want a winter coat you know as you walk into M&S what coat you want.

It’s got nothing to do with grandma’s skills. Nothing.

Rhaenys · Yesterday 21:01

The interview process for supermarket jobs is ridiculous as well. People shouldn’t have go through a 3 stage interview process for an unskilled job that pays minimum wage.

This too. I know someone who took supermarket cleaning job, and had to do a group interview. He cleans the store once it is closed.
Add to the the psychometric tests that tend to filter out anyone with ND, again for any supermarket job, not just the higher paid roles.
