Cost of living. Teens with no jobs

monkeysox · 16/06/2026 20:06

The whole COL crisis is exacerbated by huge supermarket chains (one example) who are making huge profits. They don't employ as many young people (automation) so the cost of the kid's needs falls on the parents who have huge bills themselves.
I always had a Saturday or evening job.
Businesses aren't hiring nearly as much as 30 years ago.

Look I’ve been working since I was 14 but my parents never asked me for a penny. It wasn’t expected of me!! But it’s not a new revelation that children grow up and become teenagers that need clothes and food! Age 6 or 16 I don’t care I am the parent…so I provide!! Age 26 is a different matter…but she said teenagers. Even at 26 I want my dc to know they can turn to me. I’m not a bank etc but you know what I mean!

I had to pay my parents half of what I earned as they did not have a lot of money.
If yours didn't expect you to contribute then they probably did not need the money. Not everyone has high earning parents, or even two parents.

MyrtleLion · 17/06/2026 20:14

Upsetbetty · 17/06/2026 20:05

but OP is talking about teenagers who don’t even have jobs!

And the context of the quotes I was responding to was about reducing the strain on families if their kids work. I was responding to those who were saying their kids’ wages were essentially luxury money.

Not sure what you’ve contributed here.

Bar food and clothing…what do they NEED? At 16 let’s say?

Confectionary, a better phone than a brick, headphones, craft stuff, odd bit of make up, more clothes than a couple of weekend outfits etc…

There really aren’t. Have you been asleep? It’s been well documented how difficult it is to get work if you’re young even in hospitality.

Apprenticeships are harder to get into than Oxbridge and no young people
shouldn't be flexible and go into the care sector. Vulnerable people deserve the best not bored teenagers who don’t want to be there.

I don’t think that you are all that informed on the teenage job market!

There are over 80,000 job vacancies in the hospitality sector alone!

https://www.netsuite.co.uk/portal/uk/resource/articles/human-resources/restaurant-labour-shortage.shtml

There are thousands of apprenticeships advertised for future engineers… my employer takes on lots of apprentices and they do day release to earn a HNC / HND and finally full degrees whist completing their portfolio to become ICE members!

So they shouldn’t be having children then. I don’t care if circumstances change! You get up and you provide! End of!

What age were you when you stopped living off your parents?

Girasoli · 17/06/2026 20:20

My main teenage job was always babysitting...I imagine that is drying out a bit as parents can afford to go for less nights out. Having said that, I've known people to pay teenagers they know well to look after their primary age DC in the holidays if the DC don't enjoy holiday club.

The other place I see with lots of late teen staff is the DCs swim school, most of the assistant teachers are A level/uni students (who probably came up through the swim school).

Luckily me eldest is only 10 - worse case scenario I will get him to babysit DC2 if he wants some extra money.

Girasoli · 17/06/2026 20:21

I missed a bit there! I meant if the economy isn't any better when he is in his teens. I'm not letting the 10 year old babysit.

Confectionary, a better phone than a brick, headphones, craft stuff, odd bit of make up, more clothes than a couple of weekend outfits etc…

So they can get a job if they want those things but not to ease my finances and help me provide basics

What age were you when you stopped living off your parents?

Well I was 18 going to university and I had a part time job that paid well. About €300 a week. They paid my accommodation and i paid everything else. Once I finished university I worked…I travelled…I studied again. Never lived at home again. So 21. Is that ok with you?

Hospitality is always available in sports stadiums, just sign up to an agency!

As a student I worked at Cricket Test Matches, Horse Racing, Football Stadiums. Rugby, Tennis and Golf clubs, Galas, Civic Functions, Award Ceremonies, Company events, Weddings etc…. they also can find chambermaid work too!

There are non caring jobs in care homes available to under 18s such as porters, cleaners and kitchen porters.

Fast food restaurants are always recruiting new staff too!

Shoe shops and uniform shops take on extra staff during the summer holidays as it’s their peak season.

I have had a job continuously since the age of 14 - weekends and school holidays while at school and sixth form, throughout university at evenings and weekends, and after graduation! After graduation I have never been unemployed either!

You just need to be creative and think positively about using agencies to find you hospitality work. Just walking up and down a local high street won’t give you many options. Cast your net more widely!

All those NEETs not heeding your very sound advice......
Not all kids have access to a sports stadium.

Fast food restaurants are always recruiting new staff too!
Maybe, but there are many, many applicants for each position.

No shoe or uniform shops within 20 miles of me. DS would spent all his earnings on public transport.

Lampzade · 17/06/2026 20:25

It is difficult out there
There are a many graduates who cannot find a job . Many of them are choosing to do
’panic ‘Masters because they can’t find a job

It is up to you if you charge your kids upkeep for living at home when they have a job. Personally, I don't think you are doing them any favours by not doing so, as they will have to fend for themselves once they leave home (if they do.. why would they if you are bankrolling them?) and wont learn the value of paying their way and contributing.
I know some parents take a contribution from their kids, and keep it in a savings account for them.
But some genuinely need that money to help with household costs. Again, not all parents earn a lot, not all teens have two parents. Some have disabled parents.

But you seem to think a 16 year old does not need anything other than food and basic clothing, so....

But it does ease your finances as life is grim for young people without those things and without a Sat job many parents would feel pressured to fund some of them for them. Kids should be paying for them themselves but if they have no job would you want your child to have a struggling phone, no hobby materials etc.

safetyfreak · 17/06/2026 20:30

Mass unskilled immigration has meant that you are seeing many older immigrants taking roles that young, Brits would usually do as an entry job.

There has also been a cut in jobs due to Labour policies etc.

Just so F up.

Think I am , it’s well known that the entry level job market is broken, hospitality is struggling and apprenticeships are as I said harder to get in than getting into Oxbridge.

I love employing teens. If they have the right attitude I can train them from scratch which works perfectly for my business. I'd employ more if I could afford them but someone keeps putting the wages up along with all of my other bills and when I'm at the point where it's employ people and don't pay myself because there's only so much cost increase you can pass on to consumer when you sell non-essential goods. Supermarkets aren't the issue here. Of course they are profitable. A business isn't viable if it isn't profitable.

There's profit, and excessive profit.
Supermarkets are virtually a monopoly.
They give worse service....fewer staff makes service worse....and make higher profits.

Mumofyellows · 17/06/2026 20:33

Even not so long ago young people could work, my daughter is 23 and has worked since 14, every weekend and school holidays in a cafe, then as a carer at 17 when she passed her driving test while doing A Levels, she did a gap year as a TA and worked all though uni in holiday play schemes for children with SEND, to now where she’s about to start her first qualified teaching post. As a single parent she knew I couldn’t afford everything she wanted to do alone, especially driving lessons and running her first car, so she went and worked so she could pay for it herself. It’s such a shame there are not so many opponow because it’s given her a great work ethic and understanding of the value of money, and allowed her to do what she has wanted without relying on me.

No golf clubs… hotels… or any sports stadiums at all?

We are in Wedding Season… lots of agency work in hospitality at this time of year!

Events happen at lower league stadiums not just Premier League stadiums ….

If you honestly live somewhere rural… then farm work could be an option!

Looks like you are putting up barriers rather than casting a wide net!

There is literally nothing where I aive and we live in a tourist area. It’s so bad parents and kids post on the local FB page asking for work.My son has been applying for months from uni for a summer job( anything)-nothing.

Hicupping · 17/06/2026 20:39

Never had any issues finding a Sat job as a teenager, at one point going from Saxone to care home for a couple extra hours. When I was a student several times walked into job centre when they had the boards with the curved cards and found work with little effort literally needed 1 card to get work. Now these roles are fewer and they have to pass online tests, then do interviews, then get offers zero hours or 6 months probation if one of the lucky ones.
Was able to get a graduate job in London albeit not a flashy well paid one but I was getting paid at 24 what the average graduate starting salary is currently and that was nearly 30 years ago.

ToffeeCrabApple · 17/06/2026 20:40

I never understand why you don't see more afterschool clubs employing 6th formers.

Also why aren't more people trying to get local teens to clean for them? Cleaners charge £24/hour round my way. If one of the many 15-18 yr olds living in the roads near me came and offered to do it for £15 an hour in afterschool time they would have people biting their hands off.

Other things that people want doing where young people could easily undercut adults:

  • car washing
  • power washing patios
  • mowing lawns
  • window cleaning

Two young teens (14) cleaned my car for a tenner the other week. Did a good job. I'm hoping they'll knock again next month and do it again, I've another tenner ready.

This article seems to be completely at odds with so many people's lived experience of getting jobs.

Which parts of the country are these jobs? There are job ads around where I am, but not a lot of young people getting the jobs. And those with jobs are having hours cut not extended.

ToffeeCrabApple · 17/06/2026 20:43

Also massive demand for cheap babysitters where i live, and people to feed cats when you are on holiday, walk dogs etc. Huge demand for dog walkers.

I’ve said upthread. my 17 yo could not get work (paid or experience ) on farm. A close friend works on one so I even have a connection.
We are rural, yes.
My son does actually have a p/t job but it took him a long time to find it.
