To book driving lessons when I’ve passed my test already?

Need advice please as I feel I might be throwing money away. I drive everyday so not a nervous driver but I am a nervous Parker. I have missed important appointments as I have anxiety parking, I also avoid going certain places where I know parking will be an issue. I’ve booked a 2 hour refresher driving lessons which will only focus on parking and nothing else. Am I being stupid?

Sounds eminently sensible to me.

Eileen101 · 16/06/2026 19:55

Not at all. If it makes you feel confident, do it.

Matleavehelp12 · 16/06/2026 19:55

Nope, sensible! You obviously need a bit of help in parking and you’re doing a 2 hour course on parking - sounds smart to me x

vladimirVsvolodymr · 16/06/2026 19:55

No you’re not, if it helps why not. Congrats on passing your driving test.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 16/06/2026 19:56

Nope, completely sensible! I HATE on street parking. I wish I’d done this.

Whatodomoney · 16/06/2026 19:56

Nope, I am the exact same and may consider doing the same thing. It makes driving miserable at times. I’d say money well well spent if it works!

houseofstark · 16/06/2026 19:57

Not at all, go for it.

i went a few years without driving. So booked some refresher lessons to get back into it and build my confidence (i was also in a new city I hadn’t learnt to drive in)

Briliant!
My daughter did this, and also an advanced driving course.

Plot30B · 16/06/2026 19:58

That sounds sensible to me. You'll hopefully regain your confidence and it will improve your life on an ongoing basis.

I'd also consider having front and rear cameras/parking cameras installed in your car (if you don't have them) and if possible take yourself to a quiet car park, at a quiet time (5am?) on several occasions, to practice without pressure.

Jeska7 · 16/06/2026 19:58

I know someone who hadn’t driven for a while who took refresher lessons. Best to be confident and it’s clearly causing anxiety and problems being late for you. So great idea.

northernplatform · 16/06/2026 19:59

Very good idea. Arranged this for DM a few years ago as she was similar to how you describe yourself, avoided going certain places and panicked if she couldn’t find an ‘easy’ space. She found it extremely useful, saying she didn’t really have any decent instruction on parking way back when she passed her test and it helped her a lot.

BrickBiscuit · 16/06/2026 19:59

I had extra motorway lessons after passing. Now considering an advanced driving refresher after many years behind the wheel.

Anonymousfds · 16/06/2026 20:02

Thank you all. It’s costing £64 for 2 hours so £32 each hour. I feel it’s a lot of money which I feel guilty about as I could spend on groceries or kids stuff but yes it will help me feel more confident.

poster who suggested cameras - how can I get them installed? My car is on PCP so can I still do this? Will have to return the car in 3 years

Sorry just add I actually passed my driving test 20 years ago!! So not a new driver. I feel useless that I can’t park. I get embarrassed when others watch me park so I’ve in the past just driven off after a few tries

Great idea. I had more lessons after I passed to practice stuff I was unfamiliar with and nervous about like motorways.

I thought about having more when I had a job that required me to drive in central London, which I hated. Fortunately changed jobs. I only get public transport in London now.

MasterBeth · 16/06/2026 20:21

There are so many poor drivers on Mumsnet who think it's OK to timidly crawl around our roads when they shouldn't be on the road.

I applaud you for trying to improve your driving even though you've already passed your test. I wish there were more people here with that attitude.

Dollymylove · 16/06/2026 20:27

I booked a motorway lesson after I passed my test, 30 years ago.
My parking is atrocious nowadays so I think I could do with a parking lesson or 2 😇

Sloelydoesit · 16/06/2026 20:27

I'm thinking about doing this. Not for parking but other reasons. And I passed my test in 1995!
I developed an issue last year that I can't shake and wondered whether a few lessons might help. I don't need to be taught anything - I just want a driver in my car with me and I don't have anyone else!
Glad to read I'm not the only one considering it

Middletoleft · 16/06/2026 20:28

Really good idea, also book for additional motorway driving.

Every little helps as they say.

Greatblue · 16/06/2026 20:30

Sounds like a great idea to me.
Why wouldn’t you get advice and work on things you have issues with?

A lot more people should follow your example.

TiddlieWinks · 16/06/2026 20:33

A wise move. Good on you.
