Job interview dilemma….

I applied for a job a couple of weeks ago. I’m part time already in my current role, this role was a drop in hours and therefore pay which tbh I can’t really afford but I’m not happy where I am and the job itself interests me, is part time, hybrid working (which are two things I’m looking for)

I have an interview for it next week…..however, I’ve just seen the same company (my local council) have advertised another role which probably interests me even more tbh and there is no drop in pay as it’s the same hours I currently work and for the same pay.

I want to apply for it but they will know that I’ve applied and have an interview for this one next week. It’s really awkward but I would rather this new role (I mean, who am I kidding, it’s so unlikely I’ll get either anyway) but also feel like I’m really unhappy where I am and am probably not in a position to be turning down interviews.

AIBU to ask what you would do?

I would put in for it. You maynot get offered the one you have interview on but might the next.

Contact them, say you’ve seen the other position advertised, explain that you REALLY want to work for them, and why (company values blah blah blah), and you want to work for them so much that you were prepared to drop your hours for the original role, and then ask whether in their opinion you should transfer your application to the new role.

If it's your local council, they won't care that you've applied for both roles. It's very likely that applications will be anonymised for scoring and unless it's the same manager for both roles, they won't see. But even if they did, it's not unusual for people to apply for a range of jobs at a council.

Apply for both, it will be fine. The issue will be if you're offered the first before you interview for the second but cross that bridge when you get to it.

One thing to consider - if the first job is a drop in money which is unfeasible, pull out now. Don't waste their time by interviewing and then pulling out because of money if you already know it's a problem. You may well get a black mark against your name for the second job if you mess them around about the first.

Thanks all. I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to pull out of the interview. Preparing for an interview is hard work and I’m already manically busy.

I would have enjoyed the role but I really can’t afford a £200 drop in pay each month atm. I want to earn more money if anything, not less! I liked the fact it was vert local, part time & hybrid and the actual role was something I feel would be interesting, but I should’ve done more due diligence on the salary before applying.

I’ll apply for this other role, however I think there’ll be a lot more competition for that so doubt I’ll get an interview for that one, but hey ho, I can but try!
