AIBU to consider a higher paid job with regular travel?

Seen a job advertised and I am really interested in it. I’ve spoke to the people and I stand a good chance of being shortlisted.

for me it would be a 20k pay increase and as a single mom of 2 it would be huge for me.

they have said it’s a hybrid role which involves travelling to 3 locations in the country. The locations are central to me so within a 45min drive, 2.5hrs one area and 2/2.5hrs the other.

they said I have autonomy over my diary, you have the ability to have overnights to group them together and reduce travel.

id have to go and visit the other locations on average 8-10times a year.

the director said to me the travel can be 4 days a week, 2 days the weeks after depending on what’s happening. She lives in a different part of the country so travel to her may look different to me.

the post holder said to me she usually does 2-3 days a week at home and usually does a day of travel and then a day at home to balance it out.

there is no travel in school holidays as this is WFH.

she said they are very chilled as long as you get your work done there is no expectation to log on after a day of travel as this is included in the working day.

my worry is

  • will I be burnout from travelling 1-2 long days a week
  • I’m worried I might miss seeing the kids but this isn’t all the time
  • some weeks will be busier than others.
  • I don’t have the ability to just drop everything and travel 2hrs the following day. This is ok if I plan it.
  • im worried ill be clocking up 60plus hours where the job is only technically 40hours

I don’t mind travelling but would love to hear from others that do something similar in the week and how they handle it? is it worth the pay rise.

there is no job progression and nothing in the past 18months has come up like this for me.

this pay rise could be huge for me as I have to buy my ex out of the house which will increase my mortgage by £400 a month!

all expenses are covered, you get a fuel card etc

my kids stay at there dads 2 nights a week and get collected from school by their grandmother one day a week.

I usually do 2 days a week but can use wraparound for the other 2 days if I was stuck.

my kids are 5 and 14.

any advice? The fear is taking over and I don’t want to regret not trying but also don’t want to tip my life upside down.

If I knew my children had family to look after them when I was away, was able to arrange my schedule for their important dates and thought I could manage the workload I would go for it!

If you can make it work and would like to give it a try, go for it!

More traffic on this one as opposed to regular chat group so didn’t see the harm.

What do you mean by 'no travel in school holidays as WFH'? Most jobs would expect you to work as normal in school holidays. Is the job term time only?

No it’s all year round but the job works with schools and when the schools are closed there is no ability to visit or travel to them.
