Lipstick put on around the lips

I’ve started noticed more and more women who have drawn their lipstick around their lips, rather than just on them. AIBU to find this quite weird? I think it is meant to make their lips look fuller but it usually looks as though they missed their lips and decided that it would do. One of the contestants on Race Across the World used to do it.

Is this a new make up trend that has just passed me by? It’s rather unnerving.

Since the 20s if you count Clara Bow

They don’t look overpainted to me

Overlining looks really odd, like they’ve put on their lipstick in the car and missed. This and the contouring/bronzing stuff seems to be driven by makeup influencers and get ready with mes - all of whom are on film, where it looks ok.
In real life it looks clownish.

I think it looks really awful too, I have fairly full lips but had a make up artist overline my lips for a job recently and while the photos looked good I've never do it irl as they looked ridiculous in person.

It’s a make up artist trick that doesn’t work when done badly.

We all have two lip lines - an inner and an outer one.

Good make up artists subtly enhance the outer one with a shade that’s close to the natural lip colour and use a corresponding nudist lipstick. It does make lips fuller.

But that translates to RL with people using (the trend now seems to be dark brown lip pencil) massively overdrawing above their outer lip line and filling in with much lighter lipstick.

It looks crap - much like the whole slugs as eyebrows or harsh contouring.

Some people just don’t seem to look in the mirror…what works (often with a filter) on Instagram doesn’t work in real life (or with your face shape/skin tone).

But hey…it’s the fashion and I was once not immune (shudders at the memory of electric blue mascara and eyeliner bought from Ms Selfridge - white and pink packaging- am I alone here? As a very young teen and thought I looked amazing 😂)

Isn't this where you draw with lipliner just outside your lips rather than lipstick? I'm sure that's how it used to be done.

It isn’t that they have put lip liner on the outside edge of their lips, more that they have gone well past their lips and drawn a mouth on where the start of their chin is.

Exaggerated bow, not generally overdrawn like the 40s lips but concentrated in the middle. Same principle just bigger and more defined in the middle.

Clara didn’t overpaint.

Rather she under painted by creating a sharp cupids bow and stopping her natural lip line at the sides to create an artificial heart shaped mouth.

Looked great on film (with thick grease paint - pre even pancake make up) but I suspect in real life it would have looked pretty awful.

I used Lucille Ball as my inspiration for 40s makeup for fancy dress and had to adjust the lipstick, it looked too mad. It was part of her whole look but did not translate.

Peoniesallgone · Today 19:50

I used to do that in the 80s. I wanted to look like Debbie Harry

Isn't it ombre lips rather than just over lining? I mean who can be arsed? Some people must spend literally hours getting ready with routines for hair, skin care and make up. Life is too short! I'm not averse to make up and self care, but there is no need for so much of it, especially not on younger skin.

It can look good on Hollywood stars who have professional makeup artists, usually if they are wearing something very neutral and subtle with gloss rather than bright red. It’s not a look I’d ever have the confidence to go out in personally.

I’ve just had a Google - this is the sort of thing I mean.

@CruCru Ah that’s just silly isn’t it?

ShutupLwren · Today 20:58

I used to do this and use concealer on my lips. I must have looked a total pleb.

edit to add - maybe it took away from my ridiculous hair sprayed fringe!
