Waking hourly

My DS is now nearly 6 months old and is waking up a lot during the night, sometimes every hour. About two months ago he had a period where he would 'sleep through the night' (11pm-5am) but those days are long gone. During the course of the day he'll have about three 20 minute naps and then at night will wake up every couple of hours throughout the night. He doesn't want feeding, he's just unhappy about something and cries until we can rock him back to sleep. What can I do? Am getting desperate! Is it too early to try 'controlled crying'?

hi, no advice i'm afraid but can i suggest you re-post this under 'parenting'? people might not see it here. good luck!

just wandering if he is teething as this is the right age for them horrible teeth to be moving around could try bonjela at bedtime and see if it helps him settle longer

my ds sleep pattern was out the window with teething

bubblagirl · 24/06/2008 08:24

i wouldnt do controlled crying until you have found why he is crying obviously distressed about something could have trapped wind could be teeth rule things out first then you could try it but only leave 10 mins then go in and settle dont ever leave to scream

i would think maybe teething as this is so painful would cause to disturb sleep regualy so try some bonjela

ashton and parsons teething powder is great to but found i still needed bonjela for longer affect

also in day put edge of flannel in freezer and rub round gums will help to toughen them up

probably teething like bubbla says.
Has he got used to going to bed awake or is he normally fed to sleep?

sleeplessinstepney · 24/06/2008 20:44

Thanks for all your advice. VictorianSqualor, he is rocked to sleep in my arms when he gets tired - about 7.30pm. Will definitely try bonjela.

If he is rocked to sleep in your arms it's likely that he hasn't learnt how to get himself back to sleep which is why he is waking up properly, rather than just stirring and drifting back of iyswim.
Many babies wake up in the night but as they learn to get themselves back to sleep us parents don't even know they have woken, all that is different with your DS is not knowing how to get back off.
It might be a good idea to start a bedtime routine that involves him going to bed by himself, still awake.
