Budget friendly supermarket prices

I want to host a family get together next week but would like to keep costs down. I always cook something but usually the cheaper things like mince are super expensive atm. I've also noticed that passata is cheaper than chopped tomatoes. Can anyone give some tips as to what they are finding cheap in the supermarkets atm? I can cook pretty much anything but my family do like meat and big flavours.

Pork shoulder is cheap - look up slow cooker pulled pork recipes and shove it in the slow cooker. Serve with buns and salad and coleslaw

For mince I started using pork and beef mince, I find it a lot cheaper than regular beef mince and actually tastes really nice. Alternatively the Asda own brand beef mince is nice. A big tray of chicken breast can be cheap in places like Asda/tesco. I don’t rate Aldi meat unfortunately I know some people love it though

Asda do have 3 for £12 on a selection of their meats.
Pulled pork is always a hit whenever we have a party and so easy. I cook a pork shoulder in apple juice in the slow cooker.

Sorry just to say that my parents won't eat pork because of health problems (cholesterol etc)

Chicken thigh and rice in a one pot recipe. There are lots online.

Home made garlic flatbreads on the side.

  • Dough: Mix 150g plain flour, 150g Greek yoghurt, 1 tbsp olive oil, and salt. Knead briefly until smooth.
  • Cooking: Roll dough into 3mm thick rounds and cook in a dry, hot pan for 2-3 minutes per side until puffed and golden.
  • Garlic Butter: Melt 30g butter with grated garlicand chopped parsley. Brush over hot flatbreads immediately after cooking.

one bag of flour and a large Greek yoghurt pot, butter and garlic would make loads and cost around £5.00 with plenty of left over flour butter and yoghurt. So much nicer than shop bought too.

Or a curry - again I’d use chicken thighs.

I’d do a lentil Dahl too on the side and the garlic flatbreads.

Frozen white fish is reasonable in Lidl and Aldi.

Theres a great traybake with feta cheese and tomatoes - tomatoes are cheap at the minute as they are in season. You stir in pasta or rice at the end - but it doesn’t contain meat.

Pasta bake with little bits of chorizo sausage or chilli con carne. The kidney beans make the meat go further. You can add lentils or other beans too. Chop up a ton of onions, celery and carrots very finely to start with so you have a substantial base.

I do similar to @Genevieva with mince- always plenty of grated veg in there and then whatever suits the dish beans-wise. For a Bolognese I add a big handful of red lentils to the pot, they sort of melt into the sauce so it all still tastes beefy but it's more substantial.
