AIBU to wonder why some people still buy new carrier bags every time they visit a shop?

It’s 10.5 years since the bag charge in England was introduced and longer in other parts of UK.

So why are some people still don’t go to the supermarket without bags? They are 40p each.

If a family buys an average 8 bags a week - supermarket, shops like Poundland. Over a year that’s at least £160 a year.

Anyone who uses brand new carrier bags for bin bags must have more money than sense. Bin bags are cheaper - per bag, bigger and ties up better.

The bag charge - kids at primary schools never lived through a time with free bags.

Its time thinking - money, phone, keys, bags

Forget them, didn’t plan to go.

my DH does always buy them- has never started the habit of bringing his own

Lemonade2011 · 13/06/2026 17:46

I always forget mine. Am hopeless started getting the thicker bags and seem to remember to pop in car once I empty shopping so it’s getting better

Honeyhonay · 13/06/2026 17:48

Seeing someone buy bags doesn’t mean they buy them every time, isn’t that obvious?

Sometimes I go to the supermarket without bags because I wasn’t planning on going, it doesn’t mean I never reuse bags.

5 bags for main shop
1 bag for top up
2 bags from two other shops - Poundland, Home Bargains

5 bags for life for a main shop?! That sounds like a huge amount of shopping! Maybe we just don't buy that much.

starfishmummy · 13/06/2026 17:51

Because sometimes they want new bags? Not everywhere does the bag for life exchange thing.

gannett · 13/06/2026 17:53

Sometimes I forget a bag. Sometimes I pop into the shop on my way back from my run. I'm not dragging a bag of life around 18km with me. Most of the time I bring a bag though so that's not "every time"

C152 · 13/06/2026 17:54

Yes, YABU, because it's not hard to fathom, is it? People buy a carrier bag because they have too much to carry without one. As to why they don't bring their own: they forgot, they don't carry a handbag big enough to fit another bag in (or they don't use a handbag at all), their existing bags are no longer fit for use, they can't be bothered...just a few reasons that spring to mind.

Yetone · 13/06/2026 17:57

Most of my shopping, including my food is done online so when I do shop then it is never planned. I wouldn’t take a bag round with me just in case as it takes up room in my handbag.

See colleagues buying a meal deal at a supermarket 5 mins walk away and always buy a bag.

Then family opposite me general rubbish bin overflows with new bags

Why are you even noticing colleagues and neighbours so much?

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 13/06/2026 18:02

I get my shopping delivered, and most times I go into a shop it’s for an amount I can carry so don’t routinely carry a bag (and rarely have a handbag). Sometimes I buy more than I expected and need to buy a carrier bag, maybes a handful of times a year.

I sometimes forget my bags. ADHD tax, innit. But nice to know some people are judging me for it. 🙄

Same here, but I don't buy a plastic bag!

I managed to carry a stack of shopping in my arms the other day from my local Waitrose as I forgot a bag and they wanted £1 for a plastic bag!!!

Thisisnotmyid · 13/06/2026 18:05

Because I’m busy and I forget my name half the bloody time never mind a bloody bag that’s why!

Why not fold a bag into each hand bag?

98% of the time o don’t have a hand bag. I just don’t like them.

SENsupportplease · 13/06/2026 18:06

ADHD, I always forget

UniquePinkSwan · 13/06/2026 18:06

I buy them every time because I don’t want to be carrying a bag everywhere with me

Everydayimhuffling · 13/06/2026 18:07
  1. I've forgotten bags or popped into the shop last minute so don't have them.
  2. I need more bags because I use them to take my lunch to work every day and periodically things leak and I need a new bag. Or we use them to take dirty washing back from a holiday or visit, or to carry spare shoes or something. Bags are useful.
DelphiniumBlue · 13/06/2026 18:09

I nearly always have a couple of fold-up bags in my handbag or pocket for emergencies , but occasionally buy more than anticipated.
OTH, my adult DC ( who are the ones inheriting the planet`and will be the people dealing with the forthcoming environmental crisis) mostly forget to have a bag with them, and so get new ones every time they go to the shops. And also have frequent Amazon deliveries in boxes and bags. And refuse to wear second hand clothes.
My mum, in her 80s, always has a spare bag on her.

User478 · 13/06/2026 18:09

I forget bags all the time. Or I pop in for 1 thing buy 10 and need a bag.

Your local food bank would thank you for spare bags, ours is always after bags.

5 shopping bags for an average sized family for a week is completely normal. I mean what are you suggesting is reasonable if you think that’s such a huge amount of food.

Bags for life are huge though, a trolley full of shopping would probably only need three of them.

SkippitySkoppity · 13/06/2026 18:11

This used to be me. Then I made a resolution to stop. So I bought a couple of Baggu bags, made sure I had one on me at all times and as a result haven't had to buy a bag for life in well over a year. I'm cured!

Justanopinionnothingmore · 13/06/2026 18:11

Because I am a thick, forgetful ADHD bitch that has several in the back of the car. Sometimes I remember and sometimes I do not which results in another bag. Meh.

ADHD, I always forget

I'm not adhd, but I still forget everything!!

TeaPot496 · 13/06/2026 18:15

I invariably forget my bags but only pop in for a few things. I then have to create a precarious tower to carry back to the car, as I'm not spending money on a bag!

AnnaQuayRules · 13/06/2026 18:20

I occasionally buy a bag when I've forgotten to take one or have bought more than planned.

I filled up with fuel at a garage the other day that had a mini M&S shop inside. There were loads of yellow sticker items on sale so I bought lots for the freezer and had to buy a bag as I hadn't planned to buy any food.

Our local food bank is always asking for "bags for life" to be donated so the M&S one ended up there
