That it’s impossible for 14 year olds to get volunteering experience.

I have a very sensible 14 year old girl who is hoping to be a teacher when she grows up. She has a 9 week summer holiday and gets so fed up! She would like to do some volunteering to get some things on her CV, however, it seems impossible to find anything these days.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Tried to motivate my then 15 yo SD to do this but she couldn't have been less interested and then her Mum waded in to say she mustn't talk to strangers. 🤦 Couldn't be more different to my brother and I who were both earning by that age at a princely sum of £3.65 at the local pharmacy or £5 per washed car. And yet, according to her Mum's side of the family and my in-laws, I'm the spoiled privileged princess. 😂

How sad that offering to do odd jobs for neighbours is perceived as 'talking to strangers'! What's funny is that so far he's been paid a fortune for mowing weeding and painting and everyone has commended his 'enterprise' (I quote) 😀

Could she get a holiday job, would that he easier to find? Babysitting/dog walking for neighbours, life guard at local pool, cafe?

What local pool is hiring 14 year old lifeguards??!!

If she wants to be a teacher this is good experience of doing nothing for the whole summer.

If she's looking for something to do over the summer, as opposed to ongoing weekly volunteering, could she set herself a challenge to do, and try to raise money for a charity, instead of actually volunteering?

I would think trying to find a volunteering role that only lasts for the summer holidays would be very difficult. If she was looking to volunteer with children, children's clubs such as rainbows/brownies mostly only run term time anyway - or are not likely to take her on only for a few weeks.

But she could take on a fundraising project - one of our cub young leaders has recently raised over £3000 with some friends for Cancer Research by doing a 24 hour table tennis marathon. Another teenager raised money by cycling the distance from London to Paris on a static bike. Perhaps she could do something for a children's charity?

My son volunteered in an Oxfam bookshop at that age.

My dd volunteers through her swimming club. She’s been doing it since she was 14, as has all the other kids who wanted to. Is she involved in any sports or clubs?

That’s very interesting. Was it paid work?

I think so, but she turned the offer down due to exams/ other commitments.

For example dn is a primary teacher and used to volunteer with Brownies and go on camp holidays before she was 16.
