AIBU to think carry-on luggage is enough for five nights in Ibiza?

AIBU for thinking I can manage with just carry on luggage for 5 nights in Ibiza? I was planning on buying toiletries there, small make up bag, 1 x flip flops, 1 x sandals, 2 bikinis, 2 beach cover ups, shorts, 3 evening outfits, couple of vest tops, underwear. I think it’s doable, friends are reacting in horror at the very idea 😝

Just have a practice pack.

I’ve done a month traveling in the far north of Scandinavia with 7kg of luggage and a tube of travel wash, you can certainly do Ibiza

Those worried about waiting for luggage - the new electronic checks in a lot of European countries mean you’ll be waiting there way longer than you’d be waiting for your luggage. So taking checked luggage isn’t going to slow you down (but passport control probably will - thanks Brexit 🤦‍♀️)

This. My luggage has been waiting for me on all my trips in recent years.

If you are strapped for cash and it's the only way you'll get a holiday then do it. Personally if I had to cut costs I would prefer to save money on other things.

Hoe many evening dos did you go to while you’re where there?

Well none, but I ate in restaurants 🤷🏻‍♀️

jackstini · 13/06/2026 15:47

We did 11 days in Mexico with only carry on - easy

ShodAndShadySenators · 13/06/2026 15:54

If you mean one of those wheelie cases that fit in the overheads, you'll be fine. You can get a lot in those and in a hot place, most of your clothes are light and thin, much less bulky than spring/autumn stuff is. I always take warmer items and wear them on the plane so they're not taking up luggage space but I've got them if it's chillier in the evening than I'd like. Most airlines allow you a personal bag which won't be huge but you could get a couple of things in that as well (I usually put a little crossbody bag, a crescent shaped Uniqlo one, into my personal bag with my bits and pieces like book, purse, phone, tissue pack, so they don't need to go in the luggage bag either).

shrumps · 13/06/2026 17:15

Thanks all - I feel vindicated! Some excellent suggestions re towels and packing cubes etc! I plan to go out every night but don’t mind wearing same dress more than once (clubbing once, will mainly be nice restaurants and cocktails so not too sweaty)
it’s more about wanting to just land and dash as it’s an evening flight (but aware that the airport is a bit of a nightmare at the moment so don’t think it will be a really quick get away)
Ive done Rome for 3 nights with a small rucksack and that was fine (I also camp and hike so used to travelling as light as possible) it was more the reaction of friends and work colleagues that made me wonder if this was a normal travel plan 😁

Well, it was fine for a month crossing Canada by road, train and ferry a couple of years ago. Husband and I (mid 60's) flew into Halifax then crossed Canada to Vancouver Island without flying. On and off trains and ferries and in and out of hire cars so needed to travel light. We took detergent leaves and an elastic portable washing line and did some hand washing from time to time.

AuditAngel · 13/06/2026 21:59

2 years ago I did 4 weeks in Spain with a carry on wheelie case. I did have a washing machine, but didn’t wash much, and came home with clothes I didn’t wear

Wexone · 14/06/2026 12:42

your going to get different responses. the competitive ones who says one set of clothes enough for the week just wash in sink every eve and the other set who bring everything bar the kitchen sink. only you know what you prioritise. yes it can be done if you need to but it you don't you don't have to. I have had to do it due to finances but I hated it. I now can afford to pay for check luggage and want to. I like have a choice of clothes and my make up etc with me. I hate hate having to carry on my luggage on to the plane with me. I bring my smallest hand bag with me plus a bag fo sweet etc bought in duty free. I touch wood never have had luggage lost nor had to wait ages after getting off the plane for it. yes it's doable if you want to

TheLette · 14/06/2026 13:07

Assuming you mean a large carry on bag (like a small suitcase) and not a tiny handbag sized situation then this is extremely doable given you are doing a warm, sunbathing type holiday. I took a carryon suitcase for a 2 week trip (no separate handbag as I was only allowed the suitcase on board). Trip involved a lot of tourist stuff in Jordan and Israel and I needed to take some modest clothes, some warm clothes as we stayed a few nights in the dessert, as well as a few days at a beach resort. It was easy.

I would buy suncream and essential toiletries at the airport if I ran out of space. You can take airport purchases on board in addition to your luggage allowance.

Other tips:

  • I take Sun Buddy suncream dispensers and find we use a LOT less suncream than otherwise as they are very efficient at spreading it round. A full one of those is within the 100ml limit and would likely be enough for 5 days for 1 person.
  • Lush shampoo bars are good, you can cut it into a third and just take a small chunk.
  • Decant everything into smaller bottles.
  • I would just take 1 denim jacket or a light cardigan and wear that on the plane.
  • See what items can be shared with your friends, like perhaps some toiletries and things like hair straighteners if needed.

i rinse out t-shirts etc in my hotel washbasin - in hot weather they dry overnight. Why yes, i am about to spend 10 days in Europe with just an Easyjet underseat bag

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 14/06/2026 13:16

Easy. I am off to Croatia for five nights with just a cabin case and a small backpack as my under seat bag. That’s what came as standard with my EasyJet flights. I’m packing Birkenstocks, two bikinis, beach towel, two pairs of shorts, a dress, and loads of t shirts. I will wear cropped linen trousers and walking trainers on the flight with t shirt and hoodie.

I packed sun cream but will just buy some when I get to Dubrovnik.

hipposcanweartutus · 14/06/2026 13:21

Easy! We travel quite a bit and I’m able to pack enough clothes for a week that gives me a different outfit every day and every evening! And I take my hair straighteners, tea bags, meds, toiletries etc!

bangalanguk · 14/06/2026 14:20

I think that's doable especially if not packing toiletries, the clothes you need at this time of year are thin/small it'll be fine.

Serenwib · 14/06/2026 18:03

Definitely. I've done 8 days in Chile (conference followed by a few days of sightseeing, so needed different clothes for different occasions) with a cabin case and handbag. My DD did 5 days in Lisbon with just an underseat backpack. We both took toiletries too.

CeramicRoses · 14/06/2026 19:22

There’s no chance I’d ever check in luggage for 5 days. I’ve done 3 weeks or more with a carry on. Roll clothes tight, put things inside shoes (although take bare minimum of footwear) wear bulkiest clothes on plane, travel size toiletries and you can always buy shampoo or deodorant etc there if need be.

Phineyj · 14/06/2026 20:17

I just did 5 (very hot) days in Switzerland and France with just carry on and was fine. Those Decathlon towels are fab!

OMGitsnotgood · 14/06/2026 20:27

Very doable if you don’t mind washing and wearing things several times over . Shampoo is perfectly ok for handwashing, and means you’ll waste less of what you buy there. Wear lots of layers on your flight - vest top, blouse, jumper or cardigan, jacket. Buy baby wipes in resort then for items you’ve not worn much use them to wipe the armpits of tops or the gussets of shorts/trousers. Will freshen them up enough to wear again.

It’s do-able, but if the people you’re travelling with are taking luggage won’t you be waiting for them to collect their bags anyway?

Nsky62 · 14/06/2026 20:48

I always take small holdhall, don’t do shorts ( stay with family), so no towels.
mini toiletries, shower bar, deodorant and shampoo.
Pack for 5 days, 3 dresses, cropped trousers, about 4 tops, swimsuit, under, pyjamas, knickers, extra bra, spare sandals sorted

Cooshawn · 14/06/2026 20:49

Of course. I've no issue with paying for bags. But I just cannot bear waiting for bags at the carousel. It's a tragic waste of time when I either want to be getting where I'm going or getting home.

Mumfirsttime23 · 14/06/2026 20:52

Absolutely fine.

dizzydizzydizzy · 14/06/2026 20:57

DefIntely doable. I often do it - and I take toiletries too. It saves a lot of money and hassle. I have just bought one of those ridiculous-looking multi pocket jackets on Vinted. I’ll be able to put a lot of my clothes in the pockets and anything in my pockets does not count towards my luggage allowance.

PinkEasterbunny · 14/06/2026 20:59

Sorry but I would need a small suitcase, to be checked in. I have never been any good at travelling light and taking a suitcase is only ever a small extra cost and a few minutes extra wait
