To tell you that IKEA are ending their Malm and Hemnes chest of drawers range?

End of an era

Theyve got safety issues havent they, although I bet their replacements will be more expensive and of lesser quality 🤷‍♀️

Malm is already second bottom quality wise.

Ikea have denied that they are replacing Hemnes apparently and say the Malm replacements are going to look like malm but you can only open one drawer at a time.

HorribleHisTories15 · 13/06/2026 01:09

Praise the Lord. While they are at it, they can close the entire IKEA chain and company too. Time for real wood with fewer chemicals in our homes.

Apparently they are tip hazards unless you screw them to the wall, which people rarely do.

Yeah make the real wood products as affordable and I’m on board.

We've had malm and hemnes over the years and the quality now is nothing like it was 14-20 years ago, I went to buy a dresser to match one I bought 15 years ago and it was so flimsy in comparison, same with the daybeds and drawers. My first set of malm years ago was amazing

The drawers are quite big and can easily accommodate very heavy loads. If you have one drawer open, even if you open another drawer a tiny amount, the unit will start to tip if not anchored. Hemnes is the same. Drawers also roll open very easily once you start pulling them out. Massive, massive risks for kids. Unlike our tall non-ikea units where the drawers are not on rollers and drawers are not as deep and heavy.

Speaking from experience: absolutely. They tip so easily!

fellupthestairs · 13/06/2026 08:33

Wow, thanks for the answers to my question. I’m not dismissing anyone’s experience with Malm furniture but I’ve got the tallest chest of drawers, the double bed and two bedside tables, only a couple of years old, and they are the sturdiest pieces of bedroom furniture I’ve ever had. Granted I don’t have small children trying to climb up it! I’ve just gone and opened 2 full drawers at once and there wasn’t so much as a hint of tipping (not fixed to the wall)! Still, this must have happened to other people or you wouldn’t be saying it but mine seems as solid as a rock.

Pull down on the open drawers like a small child might.

They can overbalance quite easily.

We’ve got the Hemnes 6 drawer in our room and it has always been very secure but is probably bottom heavy because DH puts all his gym/sports clothes in the bottom of it. Have the TV unit downstairs and it’s been rock solid for is for over a decade. I’ve always coveted the day bed!

IKEA actually have some of the lowest chemical emissions from furniture of all of the flatpack stuff (which is what most things from Argos, Dunelm, etc etc will be these days).

Solid wood is incredibly expensive and impractical for a lot of reasons.

Thank you 1990s, I suspect this poster is just a massive snob

But this also applies to non-IKEA products. I’ve got a Finnish storage, similar to the Hemnes but real, and it requires stabilisation by screwing to wall too. This is a normal thing, bookcases, shelving units, anything that could lean needs to be affixed securely.

TheBloomingDahlia · 13/06/2026 09:15

This is interesting, I have the 6 drawer malm with a glass top and it’s very sturdy, but I can imagine the slimmer taller ones aren’t.

If it says in the instructions to attach something to the wall, isn’t the onus on the user to actually do it? Or is the problem with these drawers that they can tip during normal use? I have an Ikea bookcase that isn’t very sturdy and would definitely tip with a bit of a pull if it didn’t have ties, but it won’t tip just from putting books on it

I do agree with you in that mdf is crap, but IKEA is by far and away the most responsible of all their similar competitors, and they voluntarily set higher standards for themselves than the law requires. A much better choice than eg Argos - not to mention the fact that there are people buying furniture from the likes of TEMU with absolutely zero safety regulations whatsoever. I despair!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/06/2026 09:57

OH NO!!!!!!
Every day going forward I shall praise God with a loud voice that I already have all the Hemnes units I'll ever need. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

MabelAnderson · 13/06/2026 10:01

I thought the Hemnes range was solid wood ? They seem to have fewer items in the range now, maybe more expensive to produce.

Darragon · 13/06/2026 10:02

Aw man I love my Malm drawers and have been fantasizing about getting several of them. I was on the hunt for decent drawers for years before I found them. I'm so fed up of the enshittification of life due to idiots who can't follow instructions subsequently blaming products, companies and institutions for their own ineptitude. Why on Earth should it be made into my problem if some idiots don't follow the (very prominent) advice to attach the damn things to the wall? So miffed.

("similar to the Hemnes but real,"

I don't understand what you mean by this, so I apologise if it's critical to your point and I've totally misunderstood you.)

It is an issue with all chests of drawers, but Ikea's use of materials tended to be particularly egregious and their furniture was more prone than most. In particular because on some designs they had relatively heavy panels on the front of drawers without weighting the rear at all (as is common by others). The Malm series, IIRC, would tip over all on it's own when empty if all the drawers were opened at once.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 13/06/2026 16:59

Ikea Malm are good quality imo 😄 - especially compared to similar from argos!

Just when I’ve had a reorg and made space for one more 80cm and another 40cm. I’m so sorry for the end of Malm. The six drawer 40cm wide is sold out across the uk according to their website. sigh
