Why do people act like it’s a moral failure to not pack light? AIBU to enjoy taking stuff on holiday with me?

I’ve noticed this on a lot of packing/holiday threads. Lots of sneering and looking down on people for packing more than is “needed”.

Technically you could go on holiday with the clothes on your back and a spare pair of underwear and that be that, but I enjoy having options and taking some of my home comforts with me.

Why do people act like it’s wrong to do this? It doesn’t impact anyone else.

We holiday, very rarely, in the uk usually in a static caravan.everything I might need goes in my case , in most cases with English weather it’s all used before I get home.

it’s nice to know everything we need is in the boot. My DP works away a lot plus does a lot of camping so usually somewhere in the boot is also a mini camping stove, camping bed etc. takes up no space as all fits on his bike when he camps. when he’s gone to some terrible hotels for work the camping bed and sleeping bag have been useful.

one of our better self catering cottages there was a really good washer dryer so we came home with all of our clothes packed cleaned for the next week at home.

Hahahah I can beat this - 16 t-shirts for a 10 day holiday!

I'd take 20, I need to have fresh each morning and evening if its a sunshine holiday. I get very hot and sweaty and then there's suncream and insect repellent.

I like to pack options but I have also had checked bags miss the flight and show up days later so I kind of get both sides. I won’t check a bag if there is some sort of connection because that tends to be the risk, a direct flight and I don’t worry so much. Bit having no clothes for multiple
days on holiday is really annoying

This is why you take the large carry on item too! I always pack 2 days worth of clothes and underwear, plus all toiletries etc

Not sure what the point of the definition was - I’m well aware of what a skinflint is- I know enough of them!

Would I go on a city break with one? Possibly not.
Do I think they’re all bad company? No, no I don’t.

If going to London for a night or two I have a normal rucksack with minimal in it. 3 pairs of knickers, 3 pairs of socks, two tops, one pair of trousers, foldable raincoat, a nearly empty deodorant (enough for 2 days then it's binned) travel size toothpaste, toothbrush, enough tablets for 3 days, small hairbrush and if going away with my niece lightweight night wear and I'm also wearing the clothes I travel in. We stay in a Travelodge so towels, soap/shampoo and hairdryer available. I have a medium sized cross over bag for phone, specs, hat, cash, map, tickets, mascara, lipstick, one eyeshadow and applicator charger cable and plug.

However when I used to go abroad with a suitcase I used to beforehand match up clothes with corresponding jewellery, shoes and other accessories and would come home with at least 5 outfits untouched.

I’m not sure what other definition there would be- a skinflint is a skinflint.
We’ll just have to agree to disagree.

Don't you take a tube of travel wash with you?

Why would you do that?! You’re on holiday to relax, not wash!

Drives me mad! We have very good friends who constantly go on about being able to manage a 2 week holiday with just carryon luggage. They can't understand why we'd check cases in. No 1 I like clothing/skincare/toiletry options. No 2 I like to shop so need space to bring stuff back. No 3 I can't think of anything worse than having to wheel luggage around the airport, on to the plane, find space once onboard. I can not wait to check it in as soon as I'm at the airport, and then do a bit of duty free shopping and have a drink and something to eat before we board without being responsible for luggage.

But here's a 🥇 for those of you that manage hand luggage only and like to shame us that pack everything but the kitchen sink 😛

I've never even heard of travel wash. What is it - just laundry detergent in a tiny bottle, or something else?

Good thread. I have also noticed this

But then I take the kitchen sink. Im always on the weight limit on the scales. I take bulging bags as cabin luggage and underseat luggage. I wear my heaviest clothes and shoes so that I can pack more in. I hide an handbag under my jacket so technically I have carry 3 items onto the plane as well as hold luggage

I am an expert packer.

I love my clothes and shoes and want to wear as many different outfits as I can on holiday, its when I show them off.

Urgh I am so sorry, I would be absolutely gutted if this happened to me.

Its awful.

It usually happens long haul when there’s a connecting flight. I’ll always prepared.

Sweetandsaltycaroline · Yesterday 21:52

DH is an absolute pita about packing! Hes always scoffing about people making a drama about it.
I don't want to pack for him, but inevitably we spend the first morning of a holiday traipsing about looking for something very basic that hes forgotten!
The silver lining is that hes so awful at packing that theres loads of space in his case so I can buy what I want on holiday and be confident it will fit in his case for the return journey! 🤣

EmmaB1309 · Yesterday 21:54

I know exactly what you mean OP! I’m on holiday! I want my best summer clothes with me and I want options. If that means vest tops in eight different colours, a different dress for every evening and four pairs of sandals then so be it.

Tryingtokeepgoing · Yesterday 22:02

If everyone on a 2 hour flight carried an extra 5kgs of luggage then the carbon footprint of the flight would increase by about half a tonne extra CO2. There are about 40,000 such flights a day, so an extra 20,000 tonnes of CO2 a day. Not the end of the world, and yet contributing to the end of the world at the same time ;)

I pack very light, my husband was a take everything packer.

As long as you schlep your own stuff and don't hold me up with your packing, you're fine.

This.

And in the case of my partner he is the one paying for his checking in luggage. IIm not going to/50 on flight costs when I'm not taking checked baggage

7 pairs for 7 days so I'd say we're cut from the same cloth 😂

Oh same here, Ive never known anyone else who does this. Some of them are the same shoes in different colours too

I also take a lot of handbags, as they need go match my outfits

And slippers.

Bluespottedfrog · Yesterday 22:57

I think just pack what suits you but the things thst scramble my brain are
.-packing 2 weeks before your holiday. Do you have enough knickers and T Shirt to have 2 weeks worth out of action for all the family
-Practise packs. Just why?
