Why do people act like it’s a moral failure to not pack light? AIBU to enjoy taking stuff on holiday with me?

I’ve noticed this on a lot of packing/holiday threads. Lots of sneering and looking down on people for packing more than is “needed”.

Technically you could go on holiday with the clothes on your back and a spare pair of underwear and that be that, but I enjoy having options and taking some of my home comforts with me.

Why do people act like it’s wrong to do this? It doesn’t impact anyone else.

I also agree that it's a class signifier. The idea being to appear to take no care whatsoever over your appearance, vanity being a vice or sin. caring about one's appearance is decidedly lower class.

I am working class and always over pack but it's funny how other (middle class) people I holiday with and who sneer at my copious baggage, always seek me out and ask to borrow things such as hairdryers, hair tools, toiletries, bags, accessories, first aid supplies, snacks, books, tissues, extension cables, mirrors, chargers, maps, the list is endless. Funny that.

This is bollocks if I’ve ever seen it

I don’t need a solution as I don’t have a problem! And Tevas are most def not for me ;-)

Glad you don't have a problem. :) Really just replying for people who identify with you but want to save time and money. IKWYM (I think!) about Teva sandals. I have the pair with the most delicate straps so that they look like ordinary holiday sandals but they are really good on rough terrain if I'm doing a more adventurous walk. My husband solves the packing dilemma by just being a bit smarter than usual all day. He'll get changed for dinner and then wear that outfit the next day. Anyway, I hope my replies help someone. I hate not having a decent choice of clothes on holiday!

So you unpack and then need to repack up everything? Bit of a pain but if you’re always travelling solo… however the heck you wish to spend your holiday is your prerogative!!!

I don’t unpack! I keep clean clothes in packing cubes and put laundry in others!

Oh now that I would hate! Having to go through my suitcase to find what I want to wear every morning and likely evening. Doesn’t everything get very creased?

choose an air BnB with a washing machine btw!

Do you tend to go out in the evening or stay in air BnB?

Winkstink · 13/06/2026 20:09

How long are you going away for?

WeatherOrNothing · 13/06/2026 20:12

I change my pjs every night. Why would I now suddenly use it 3 days in a row? Yanbu. We pack as we would wear clothing at home or I use a laundry service if there’s one available.

Sorry but they are the ugliest and fugliest of sandals. Not to mention they look like toddler shoes! It’s truly the ‘I don’t give a shit about how I look’ of sandals.

Sueandthegoldfish · 13/06/2026 20:17

I travel a lot and am totally amazed by the oneupmanship involved ie “I did south east Asia for 6 months with an underseat bag”.
No you didn’t “do” SE Asia, you visited various places. And no, I don’t want to combine six items of clothing into eleventy hundred “different” outfits.
If I’m flying scheduled and my bags are included then great, otherwise yes I can do a week somewhere hot with a 10 kg cabin bag. (In fact, full disclosure. I’m going to Spain to see the eclipse in August for three nights with an underseat bag), but the only criteria I impose upon myself is that I have to be able to carry/manoeuvre/life my bag whatever size if is.
I don’t need three outfits every day, but I do like a choice 😁.

Ladygodalmighty · 13/06/2026 20:19

Who cares what others say. I take most of my summer wardrobe with me if I'm going to a sunny climate. It's the only chance I get to wear much of it because of the British weather!

backformoreofthesame · 13/06/2026 20:26

The judgement I would make is - you are not like me- I see lots of luggage as a hassle to manage

it’s hardly a hugely negative thing though - any more than you judging the hidden thoughts of lightweight travellers is something I would get upset about

That is another judgement / a judgement of style that I along with the PP probably disagree with. I like tevas. It’s just different. It doesn’t make you right though.

if you had said “I don’t like them at all “ that’s fine but just calling them toddler shoes is quite bitchy

why are people so keen to call out judgement by judgmental statements ?

Ive been called ridiculous stupid and many more names when i travel, i do see their point.
I only travel with a backpack, i like to move get there no faffing, hold onto my belongings at all times.

Ive seen some people and i think do you need all that stuff, and others its like they have packed their homes in cases.

I used to pack everything but the kitchen sink and regularly got “heavy” stickers on our joint big case.
When we retired and started using low cost airlines like Ryanair things had to change if I wanted to go away 5/6 times a year so I started to learn to pack light. We started having 2 x10kg carry on and the underseat bag but have now got it down to 1 x 10kg carry on between us. The key for us is the max size underseat bag as you can get absolutely loads in there especially if you use vacuum bags for underwear, pyjamas and socks. (I take 14 pairs of small knickers lol)Always do a boots click and collect for toiletries as they can go on board in addition to your luggage allowance. Decant stuff like Elemis cleanser and hair products into one week pots. Always book places with a hairdryer and that provides pool/beach towels. The only thing I rinse out is swimwear . Travel in trainers and pack pool shoes and for me a going out metallic pair of sandals that go with everything. Just got back and there are one or two things unworn so I definitely packed enough.
Its definitely a cost thing for me, I refuse to pay more for the case than my seat, but having perfected the travel light I find it difficult to get out of the habit when we do a package with 23 kg each included.

I do a lot of what you have described, including the metallic evening shoes. 😁 How does the click and collect for toiletries work? I get that you can get them after passing through security but I thought, that if challenged, you had to be able to stow them within your luggage allowance?

Not really - but I don’t iron in day to day life.

I can’t be bothered to unpack when I’m going to be moving so much. I’d much rather maximise my time in each place rather than spend half a day packing

I was allowed 46kg in 2 bags on my last trip. I had booked premium economy long haul to Bangkok
So I took one big case and one the size of a carry on and checked them both in. I had 10kg in the big one and 6kg in the small one.
Made a mistake not taking 2 large ones - coming back the large one had 20kg and the small 15kg.
I did not even wear all of my clothes.

SALaw · 13/06/2026 20:52

Why do you care? I take everything and more with me. My holiday so my choice. I couldn’t care less if others do it differently.

2 airbnbs but over how long a holiday?

do you go out in the evenings or generally stay in at airbbb?

What, these? Given that they look quite delicate with dresses but that I have also walked up a volcanic mountainside in them I think they are pretty versatile and not ugly at all. I guess it depends what kind of holidays you take. I have to balance style with function on mine. Plus over the last few years I have consistently left the airport with my HBO whilst others on the same flight were still staring at a motionless and empty carousel so it works for me. https://www.teva-eu.com/en/gb/women-sandals/tirratraveler-hiking-sandal/1166130.html?dwvar_1166130_color=WPPP

StrongPoison · 13/06/2026 21:07

I’m currently packing for a 7 night holiday next week. No kids, beach and pool holiday to relax. I’ve packed:

5 bags,
5 pairs of shoes,
4 lots of swimwear,
2 cover ups,
6 kaftans / day dresses,
4 smarter dresses for evening,
1 jumpsuit,
1 pair palazzo pants,
1 cropped trousers,
4 vests,
2 shirts,
1 kimono,
1 pair of shorts

I like to have options especially after years of packing with kids and making way for their stuff.

It has been a real pleasure pottering around choosing what to take, picking up a few new items over the last month, buying some nice travel toiletries. Part of the joy of the holiday.

WonderingWanda · 12/06/2026 17:33

Yep my husband does this. The reason he can pack light is because some other mug has remembered to pack calpol, immodium, insect repellant, kids snorkels, chargers, books and games for the kids, a beach bag, beach towelled, sun cream, eczema body wash, trainers for sightseeing, backpack for sightseeing, water bottles, hats etc

Don't get me started on the camping What have you put in the car, you're going to break the suspension. Followed, upon arrival at the campsite, by Have we got a football? Have we got a coffee pot? Have we got wetsuits? Did you pack waterproofs? Did you bring a picnic blanket?

They would have shit / or very expensive holidays without me.

There’s a Bluey episode where the Dad takes them swimming that is exactly this 😬

I’m a proud over packer.
I also am amused to watch the moral high ground when the person that berates me for overpacking is wearing the same bikini for a solid week.
I’m more than happy to pay so I don’t have to re- use not fresh underwear etc…

What’s wrong with wearing the same bikini for a week?

I wont lose it.
I dont own much so dont need much.

EveryDayisFriday · 13/06/2026 22:09

I'm in the Lake District this weekend for 2 nights, in theory I shouldn't need much. But the weather is so changeable, I've had to consider rain, wind, cold and sun. This is a silly amount of layers for 2 nights.

We also camp, I like my comfort and like to add some luxury so we bring much more than others would. For example, I would never go camping without my coffee machine or hairdryer.
