AIBU to think neighbour should not let dogs roam into gardens

I live at the end of a close. It probably has about 20 houses in it, to give you an idea of how long the road is. The layout is very open, and any walls at the front are only about a foot high, but there are some shrubs dotted about which are obviously higher.

A man who lives a few houses down has a couple of medium size dogs, and on some days his idea of walking them is to let them roam anywhere they like while he stands at the front of his house watching them. So, they go in everyone's gardens, sniffing about and doing their business. He might shout after them if they go too far away from him, but they do not take much notice of him. If they wander into a back garden, he marches round the back of your house to retrieve them as if he owns the place.

To be fair I have never seem them take a shit which he has not picked up, but it might happen unseen (I certainly do encounter animal shit on my lawn), and they freely pee on my plants and my lawn. It is more the fact that I do not like dogs, and do not like the idea of encountering one off a lead in my front or back garden, and his sense of entitlement about it all.

Totally unreasonable of him and I’m surprised everyone is just going along with it. I would be securing my back so they can’t get into back garden and look at getting something up around your front.

He is unreasonable, of course. Although I am curious why no-one has a secure back garden. Are you in the UK?

I live in a similar set up and if anyone did that they’d be hauled over the coals on the What’s app group and harangued at social events.

Not that people who do that sort of thing care anyway though.

There are various legal issues involved.

I would suggest getting evidence and then report it to the Dog Warden and the Police

Beigepjs · 12/06/2026 11:29

Completely unreasonable and he would know it.

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/06/2026 11:32

Report to dog warden who would go and have a word.

I love dogs, I have dogs, dogs are my life pretty much (work and hobby) - i would HATE this, it would drive my dogs nuts.

He's an entitled prick and needs to keep his dogs on his own property or on a lead if he's heading off for a walk until he gets to somewhere suitable for off lead walking/training.

Yes, in the UK.

I do have a gate to the back garden, but especially when the weather is good it is much more convenient to leave it open all day as it is an extremely quiet area and I go from the front to the back of the house many times a day.

Securing the front would be a lot of work and expense, and I would also need to put up big barriers between my direct neighbours on either side (which I would not want to do as I get on well with them). It would change the character of the house and that end of the close.

I may well do that, on the local FB group, but I do not want to be seen to be the only one complaining about it. I will see what the prevailing opinion is on here.

TBH this was my dog yesterday.
he snuck out as I was putting some rubbish in the bin.
it was like a Benny Hill sketch with me chasing him around our cul de sac while he merrily smelt flowers and lept over hedges.
He had the time of his life and gave the neighbours a laugh.
Obviously he wasn’t laughing when I eventually got hold of him 😂

A lot of effort and expense for something you don’t even want. He’s putting you in a horrible position.
