Air fresheners are the devil’s work

This week a kind colleague offered me a lift to the station for a long distance journey home.

The car journey was only 10 minute but felt like torture.

They had a clip on air freshener on BOTH air vents. One blowing directly in my face on my
side of the car. The other on their side.

It Was cold out so windows were closed.

My lungs nearly collapsed from the chemical riddled, fake, toxin laden hot air blowing sickly overpowering perfume air freshener into my lungs.

YANBU - air fresheners are the work of the devil and should be banned

YABU - they are lovely

I'm asthmatic and any chemical smells or aerosols can really affect my lungs. I love scented candles if they are natural smells rather than chemical, but appreciate that smell is very personal.

Squirrel60 · 12/06/2026 15:31

Bloody hell!

If everything everybody hates is literally banned, there would actually be NOTHING LEFT!

''I hate computers, ban it''.
''I hate dogs, ban it''
'' I hate yellow socks, ban it. ''

Ban this, ban that, because I don't like it.

I understand you didn't like the fumes in your face, but banning them because you don't like them?

What about all of your things- should they be banned because somebody else doesn't like them? No, they're ''not the work of the devil'', You sound like one of those weirdo bible bashers.

Dogs and computers don’t have toxic chemicals blasting out of them that cause breathing issues, migraines and potentially serious illnesses though.

offtodreamland · 12/06/2026 15:48

They're not a problem for me, usually, but if they were enough of a bother, I'd politely ask if I could temporarily remove any blowing directly at me and blame allergies or an overly sensitive nose.

vanessashanessa99 · 12/06/2026 16:45

Car ones don't bother me but them you plug-in at home - my word they give me a migraine.

excelledyourself · 12/06/2026 17:06

I don’t get the “what are you trying to hide” argument.

I shower every morning and still spray perfume, simply because I like the smell. It’s not hard to imagine people just like a certain smell in their home or car.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 12/06/2026 17:28

I don't like permanent ones like diffusers or plug in's but don't mind burning a candle with a relaxing scent when I'm winding down on an evening.

The scent in sanitary products makes me want to vom. No idea why anyones fanny needs to smell of cheap perfume.

Neither. They are mildly unpleasant and stop being noticeable after about 45 seconds in the same place.

A few years ago I would have agreed with you but they now cause me migraines which result in me throwing up. They are very noticeable.

untamedheart · 12/06/2026 17:41

I love scented candles, reed diffusers, perfume, laundry stuff and open windows
hate air fresheners, scented toilet roll and sanitary pads

We stayed in an air b&b with those stinky reed diffuser stick things in every room and it was so overpowering we all had headaches and nausea. I had to hide them all in the outside recycling cupboard during our weeks stay. After which time the house smelled a bit damp but we opened the windows and it was preferable. I wouldn’t stay there again, even though it was nice, but because the smell was overpowering

I’ve just bought some Philips air purifiers. Amazing things! Very quiet, cheap to run and they keep the air fresh and free of dust and pollen without any horrible artificial chemical smells. Plus just open a window!

Snap! First thing I do areiving in rental accommodation generally.

And as you say , this often reveals the smell of damp (because the owner is too stingy to trickle heat and ventilate when empty... and it"s their furnishings and fabrics that are getting musty 🙄)

Walkyrie · 12/06/2026 18:42

I agree. I’m not precious but the absolute soup of chemicals we are forced to breathe every day because everyone is obsessed with air fresheners and scent boosters is really annoying. Everyone in schools/officers stink of that cloying pine smell, it’s so strong even walking up the pavement I can smell it off washing lines a good 15m away.

If something is clean it shouldn’t need to be made to smell clean with artificial fragrance. Everything in my house is regularly washed at 60 with Ecover, dusted, hoovered and wiped with a lemon vinegar spray and I open my windows a lot. It doesn’t smell.

Usually the artificial scents are clearly masking the smell of dogs, damp, vapes and smoking 🤢

Muffsies · 12/06/2026 18:57

Ban them. Ban them ALL!

Some people stink of perfume and it's quite unpleasant to be near them (in the office, shop etc). You might like it but not everyone does.

If you can smell it on yourself you are probably wearing far too much.

Not if you have asthma, they don't. They have you gasping for air and reaching for your inhaler. They can also trigger migraines. And are very bad for pets. They have some serious toxins in them.

Yes they give me asthma and migraine. I once viewed a house for sale which was filthy and they tired to mask it by a plug in air fresheners in every room. I had to leave the house because my breathing was instantly affected.

I hate, hate, hate them! I had to stop a taxi and get out because I couldn’t breathe due to the overpowering chemicals. I’d much rather deal with BO, dirty clothes, cooking and food smells. Air fresheners, fabric conditioners, perfumes, after shaves, scented candles, incense etc etc are pollutants and can get in the bin!

I feel better now. Thanks for allowing me to vent OP.

You are very welcome 🤗 I feel exactly the same about all these things. I also think it’s commercialisation - brain washing us into thinking we need this stuff so they can make money - pretending they solve a problem when in fact, no problem exists. We haven’t used fabric conditioner in our house for over 30 years. Such a con and waste of time. And money.

Loathsome in any context, there is no such thing as a nice one.

Sesquioxides · 12/06/2026 11:01

Yes they're awful! We just got back from a long period abroad and MIL with her spare emergency key has come in and filled my fucking house with air fresheners! ARRGHGHGH!

😂😂😂

I'm a migraine sufferer. We once arrived at a holiday cottage and had to gather up and relocate no less than SEVENTEEN different reed diffusers andplug-in air fresheners before we could even think about unpacking. They spent the week in a cupboard in the utility room. They were all different scents as well so the place just smelt like chaos until we'd aired it out. Just no need. 🤢

I am obviously in the minority. I like air fresh fresheners, scented toilet roll, and I just wish laundry detergents and fabric conditioners were more scented, they are far too subtle for me. I have tried so many and none leave much scent for long. I don’t like it though when someone seems to literally drown themselves in perfume and you can smell their perfume half an hour after they have left the room.

Don’t even start me on scented toilet roll. What the actual f. I once used some unwittingly in a hotel and it gave me itchy bits.

plus - sanitary towels!! There is nothing wrong with how women smell, we don’t need scented pads to give us a rash thanks.

Awful things that cause asthma attacks and occasionally even anaphylaxis. People can choose to have them in their private spaces, like their own home or car, but in public spaces like shops or hotels they should be illegal.

cheeselolly · 12/06/2026 19:29

troppibambini6 · 12/06/2026 13:11

Sorry disagree. Love an air freshener! In fact I was thinking if I’ve given anyone a lift as I have febreeze clip ons on both my air vents in the car.
At home I have plug ins, use febreeze, use a spray air freshener, use fabric conditioner and scent booster balls.

But it’s so bad for your brain health

Horrific. Chemically toxic and devastating for the environment

Xmasbaby11 · 12/06/2026 19:37

I really like them but I like strong scents such as the ones people mention. I have one in my car but can turn it off so I do that and open a window when I give my friend a lift as I know she doesn’t like artificial smells.

I take your point about being bad for health and the environment. I hadn’t thought about it tbh.

You’ve missed my point. Simply wearing it doesn’t mean everyone who does is unclean or trying to hide any other smell.

And no, I’m not wearing too much.
