GP for a cough?

Dd is 4 and has developed a nasty cough over the past 2 days. Last night was coughing a lot through the night and waking herself up. A slight wheeze but no temperature, breathing difficulties or other red flags. I’m wondering if I ought to try and get her seen before the weekend but also in my experience the GP tends to just say it’s viral and rest. She is alert and happy enough in herself, a bit tired but playing and chatting.

Is there any pulling in at the ribs when she breaths? Do you have an oxymeter?

In my experience a doctor won’t do anything for a cough unless the patient is struggling to breathe or coughing up green phlegm - sorry to be so graphic!

My DD gets a lot of coughs and they’re always worse at night. If otherwise fine, no I wouldn’t see GP.

No she isn’t pulling in, doesn’t seem like she’s labouring for breath or anything. The cough just sounds really nasty and she has a slight wheeze with it.

Have a chat with a pharmacist and they might be able to recommend something that can help with the symptoms. If she is otherwise well don't bother with the GP.

You could go to a pharmacy instead of a GP.

I've been to the GP for a cough that had lasted over 5 weeks because that's unusual for a cough to last that long.

I don’t think it would have crossed my mind to see the GP for a cough they’ve only had for 2 days when the child is well in themselves ie playing happily and there are no worrying symptoms like trouble breathing or a fever. I’d honestly just leave it and do a calpol plug in tonight at bedtime.

I wouldnt go unless wheezy or long lasting cough. But sometimes I probably should have gone sooner as dd has been given antibiotics/ inhaler.

I do get anxious when my dc get ill and always question what’s best to do. Her dad has asthma and although she’s not been diagnosed with it yet I’m always on high alert when she gets anything like this. She is fully alert, no temperature, a bit lethargic but not worryingly so. I guess I will just monitor over the weekend.

I think that’s best.

I have asthma so understand the concern.

But even knowing I have asthma my doctor wouldn’t prescribe antibiotics for a cough unless it had turned into a chest infection and I was feeling really unwell.

If she was waking herself up coughing poor love then I wouldn’t be surprised she’s a bit tired today just because of the disturbed sleep.
111 is there to access out of hours GP should you need it. But from what you’ve said it just sounds like one of those typical kids viral bugs you have to ride out.
Hope she feels better soon.
