What is the hardest job in your kitchen/house that your family struggle to do?

ihavetocookagain · 11/06/2026 16:17

My family struggle to open the dishwasher to see if the dishes they left above the dishwasher could actually be put into the dishwasher.
Then next hardest job would be ignoring the open empty dishwasher and stretching over the door to put the dishes above the dishwasher.
Does anyone’s family suffer the same condition, or something else they find nearly impossible but you find easy? Aibu to think that they should have mastered this by now?

Where do i start

  • opening and filling or emptying the dishwasher
  • putting on a wash
  • filling the dog water bowl
  • taking their folded clothes into their rooms
  • putting said clothes in their (beautiful) wardrobes
  • briging down their glasses and if they do they stay by the sink
  • if diswasher is full they also stay by the sink (we have another one 🤯 a few mts away)
  • weeding

you ve got to love the teenagers 🤣🤣

Simbaonedaythiswillallbeyours · 11/06/2026 16:24
  • washing up (no dishwasher or space for one)
  • putting away their own clean washing

Its just me and the two teens, but I do almost everything else and work full time. Soul destroying sometimes!

Putting cutlery away in the right part of the drawer although strangely they have no problem find it it when they need it.

Slowandsilentindifference · 11/06/2026 17:12

Carrying clothes upstairs
Putting clothes away
Empty toilet rolls in the bin

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/06/2026 17:13

Rinsing the bath after use and picking the wet bath mat up and hanging it to dry.

Pulling the blinds and curtains when it gets dark.

For some reason, in my house, plates seem to weigh more after the food has been eaten than when the food is on them. No problem carrying them to any place in the house but they are far too heavy to lift and carry back to the kitchen.

One of my teenagers is so weak and poorly coordinated that dirty clothes rarely make into the laundry dry basket despite representing the school at basketball. It’s very worrying.

Putting clothes away.

Putting things in the dishwasher.

Returning things to the fridge.

DC1 is a competent cook. Cooked last night (I was out with DC2). When I returned home, all the pots, utensils and plates that had been used were on the surface above the (empty) dishwasher. They had used one chicken breast out of a packet. The other three (raw) that hadn't been used were also on the counter.

So, perfectly capable of knocking up dinner, including a bread and butter pudding, but returning raw meat to the fridge is apparently much more challenging.

Apparently, because I usually make everyone take their shoes off by the door, when they “nip in” with shoes on, it’s difficult to use the doormat first!!

Gravity really does work in mysterious ways! Plates and cups also too hard to be brought downstairs here also, even when they are coming downstairs with nothing in their hands!!

My daughter can’t bring down her dirty clothes. Physically incapable.
My husband can’t actually empty the washing machine once the cycle he has put on is finished. If I didn’t do it it would sit in there festering for days. Or he would keep putting it on endless cycles till he can be bothered emptying it. Thus wasting water and electricity and hogging the machine.

Sbmpp · 11/06/2026 19:11

Cleaning the fridge. Absolutely hate it.

DilemmaDelilah · 11/06/2026 20:10

Just a small gripe because my DH does an awful lot around the house. However.... Although he loads and unloads the dishwasher he seems completely incapable of putting the clean things away.

Turnitoffnonagain · 11/06/2026 20:15

Closing the flaming cupboard doors and kitchen drawers properly would be a start in this house!

Bohemond23 · 11/06/2026 20:24

Swishing the sink to get rid of coffee grounds (DH)
Picking up pyjamas/pants/socks from the living room floor (DS 11)

Mummyoftwoplus · 11/06/2026 21:02

Both of my eldest come home from school and take their socks off and throw them where they’re sat!
and no one ever refills the toilet paper, they would leave it for days if I didn’t refill!

Remembering which cupboard any item lives. Stacking tuppaware. Putting cat food pouches in the bin. Emptying cat food out of bowls. We have 2 vacs, one for upstairs one for downstairs, each has its own cupboard with charger mounted on the wall. So why are both vacs stacked in a completely different cupboard with 10% battery. 😫I've wound myself up and haven't got past the kitchen yet 😂

TutTutTutSigh · 11/06/2026 21:17

Teenagers seem to be a theme..

We recently moved the washer and dryer into an upstairs laundry room, buying new ones at the time. A few months later I watched dd stuff her dirty uniform into the dryer and switch it on. Further questioning revealed she thought it was the washer and had been doing that the whole time 😵

I would add turning on the lights when it s dark

Walk the extra 10 steps from the last kitchen counter top to the recycling bins in the utility room!!! You know, the ones with the flappy lids that stack and have name stickers on the front. No! Instead, everyone just places all the recycling on the last kitchen worktop at the entrance to the utility, and waits for the magical recycling fairy to take it all away and sort it into the correct boxes. Drives me INSANE!

Yes, this is exactly what happens in my house too. I also have labelled bins with flappy lids just a few steps away in the utility- and when they do go in their, for other reasons, the leave the door open to let the draft through!!!
