Copper phone lines

chaosmaker · 11/06/2026 12:11

Just had a letter from Plusnet saying they need to put me on EE if I want to retain my phone line. I'm happy with my landline to be in case of the machines attacking/no digital signals. EE would just be providing me with a useless digital line. Just looked and there is a petition to keep the copper lines.

Not sure if you can post petitions here but if you can, please sign and share even if you don't have a copper line still.

Lost me there at "machines attacking" OP but while you're right in one sense, which is that landlines will work in the event of power failures, which I think is a serious potential concern, if you think copper landlines are wholly analogue that's rubbish, the digital exchanges and trunk system are the reason the analogue end user has to be updated. This petition doesn't stand a chance.

Technically ridiculous really.

That ship has well sailed...

Thought it might be worth a last hurrah.....

I still don't think they've addressed the really serious problems of telecare not working though and in the petition - areas like Cornwall or anywhere with patchy signals. Definitely life or death stuff.

Also why what 3 words is a strange thing when it can rely on mobile signals in the middle of nowhere.

I was wondering about copper cables in the military

Wouldn't they need a fixed line? I mean because our entire system could go down otherwise. Do they have some internal established thing?

The military has their own radio frequencies they use for communication.

Isn't that easier to hack though?

Never mind, I'm sure the military has it all sorted out

At least I hope so - looking at today's news.

Yep. I agree. We experienced this first hand during storm Darragh. All power out for about a week and no mobile signal in our area. Total comms blackout.

Our MP is pushing this hard.

I don't think this has any chance.
BT and the alternative network providers have been telling us what is going to happen for a few years now.

The old network is being wound down as apparently it is too expensive & labour intensive to maintain (it is also prone to cable theft), also why would anyone want to keep it operational for a tiny minority of customers when fibre is the way forward (for most)?

Apart from the network itself, BT will be moving out of hundreds of (soon to be) redundant telephone exchanges and the company that owns them will be selling them off, many of which are in prime positions to be redeveloped.
The grounds around the exchange in our village used to be used as an unofficial allotment and looked lovely (although this was cracked down on a good few years ago) and I always thought it would make a fantastic location for a house.
Nowadays they would probably stick half a dozen "executive" houses on the plot.☹️
