To ask why kids run so much?

I'll say to my 7yo dd: 'go and get your cup' and off she goes, giving Usain Bolt a run for his money 😄. Leaving the flat, and there she is jogging towards the car?!

Why are kids like this?! Is it just the energy you get from being young?

Is it?! She loves it, I've had to sit her down at the table otherwise she'd be running whilst eating her rice!

If only we could bottle their energy we’d make a fortune!

ElvirRamcic · Yesterday 20:26

Energy, energy, so much energy.

In most cases, they don't have the pain some of us do! I used to wonder why people didn't run, but now I'm in my early 40s, I get it.

LittleGreenDuck · Yesterday 20:58

To get there quicker.

RedRosie · Yesterday 21:22

Sheer joy. Even better, watching a toddler/small child pedaling a bicycle furiously, or puddle jumping.

I work in a school, and every day without fail I’m having to remind the kids not to run through the dinner hall at lunch time. They get told to walk nicely to the lunch hatch before entering, but as soon as they go through the doors they start running, the one at the front does it and then they all follow until I or another member of staff reigns them in and reminds them again to walk nicely, there’s enough food for everyone etc. Every. Single. Day. I’m convinced it’s some sort of survival instinct around food at this point. And then when they’ve finished, they run to get back outside. It would be amusing if it weren’t for the fact that it can sometimes result in them colliding with kids who are carrying their full plates to their seat and their food gets dropped all over the floor.

Be glad they're doing this (and are able to do it). Tech, online deliveries, chat groups, gaming mean children and young people are more sedentary than ever. Embrace that they are becoming fit for school and protecting themselves against future problems.

BitingtheSkirting · Yesterday 22:17

All young animals do it! Kittens, puppies, lambs, even baby elephants. It's joyous.

My 3 yo makes me (well, tells me to - technically I could refuse but I always join in) pretend to be a monster chasing/try to catch him on the "walk" to nursery so that he can run from me. I have to make sure not to catch him though or he's most put out! Lots of energy & it's fun I guess!

Going fast is just more fun. Even for adults. One of my secret joys in life is when I get to free-roll down slopes in my wheelchair and pick up lots of speed. I hate it when I'm near a wonderful slope and it's got a busy crowd of people all over it.

ACatNamedRobin · Yesterday 22:31

Given how much energy they have maybe putting children to work wasn’t such a bad idea really….Win win really, they get to expend that energy, and it’s done productively.

Lonelycrab · Yesterday 22:34

It’s brilliant

used to go for walks with ds when he was about 7. Would plonk myself down on the grass and say…

see that tree over there (200m away)

run as fast as you can to there and back while I have a rest😁

the joys of an unfettered, massively growing cardio vascular system!

Being fast is fun. I’m a runner and running down a big hill is so much fun, just going wheeeeee in my head as I go super speed. It probably feels like that all the time for kids without any of the accompanying aches and pains of being old!

😄 this made me laugh - so true, its fun

I do enjoy driving downhill and seeing gravity take action tbf

If you ever go, there's a great slope in Target in Times Square! My dd loved it and discovered rolling down it whilst I was searching for snacks!

I used to do this till I was about 14. I was very very fit (lots of sport), and very impatient, and I used to think it took too long to go from A to B (think for instance going to the bus stop or from one end of the school to the other), I would get bored and impatient during the time it took to walk, so I would just run everywhere, as it was quicker and I didn't find it hugely tiring, so no skin off my nose.

😄😄 now I need to try this!!

I take the scarecrow position and whip out the bubble wand - the wind does all the work while she tires herself out!

Brilliant! When I was about 4, my mum would encourage me to play "doctors & nurses" with her - she'd be the patient and grab a quick nap whilst I was the Dr/nurse 😂
