Year 11 prom

AIBU to email complaint to head of year?

so it’s year 11, gcse maths exam tomorrow, email comes out from school this afternoon to all year 11s asking them to choose between themselves tables of 8 for prom, which is at end of June, and email him back by 9am tomorrow morning. As you can imagine the fall out from a bunch of emotional stressed 15/16 yr olds has been huge. The usual nonsense about who doesn’t want to sit with her/him, who does want to sit with him/her is ridiculous.

They are supposed to be concentrating on exams!!

I’ve told my DC, it’s one night, it doesn’t matter who you are sitting with as it’ll only be for the meal, not to get upset etc etc but of course it’s fallen
on deaf ears

there was a prom committee set up months ago which my DC joined but head of year kept forgetting to turn up to the scheduled meetings so nothing was sorted

AIBU to email saying this is a very badly timed email. This should have been sorted out months ago or after exams next week. That it’s encouraging exclusion by letting the children choose the full table rather than writing down a couple of people they’d like to sit with. The quick turn around for an answer when the Maths exam tomorrow is ridiculous.

I’m fuming at having to deal with this. My DC is quite level headed and has studied hard for GCSEs.

Just want opinions if im
over reacting

thanks

That is shit timing, I would be really pissed off too.

I would send a short email saying the above in a more polite way.

Sorry you and the DC are unnecessarily stressed out

Poor timing. I'd certainly email to say that the timescale, considering the timing of it, is not sufficient and has added to stress levels. I doubt it will change this year's event. Hopefully they'll think ahead a little more next year at least.

Flumposie3 · Yesterday 23:05

Definitely poor timing. My daughter has the same exam tomorrow and I would not be impressed if similar happened.

Bunnybigears · Yesterday 23:06

Yes that's shocking timing and I think asking the kids to sort out the seating themselves is also a mistake. My DS is autistic and not in anyway popular. He has a handful of friends but not many of them are going to prom although he is. He would be hard pushed to arrange a table of 8. I thought his school was bad enough sending them a voting form for awards such as "prettiest girl' and 'most likely to go on Love Island's in half term.

Sometimes I do think schools are totally thick about these kind of social things and the feelings that get stirred. I would be pissed off as well

wtf? I hope parents complained

stichguru · Yesterday 23:14

I honestly think many of the comments minimise the seriousness of this. It's not just a simple mistake, it's a huge cock up and ANY teacher with half a brain cell should be able to see it's a huge cock up in seconds from a mile away! (And yes I work in education, and yes I know how much stress teachers are under, and I still think it's an in excuasble mess from anyone with enough brains to teach...!)

YANBU, that’s terrible timing, totally tone deaf to the situation. It should have either been sorted a couple of months ago, or they should wait until after exams. I would definitely send a (polite) email, I doubt you will be the only parent to raise it. I also think expecting them all to sort out their own tables is a big ask, it’s bound to cause unnecessary friendship drama which I’m sure they won’t want to deal with and not all kids will have 8 friends to fill a table, so where will that leave them? They should have all been asked to name 2/3 friends they’d like to sit with and then the school, pta or who ever is in charge should have done the rest.

Floppyearedlab · Yesterday 23:25

Terrible idea in general.
This is something I would do by sticking it into chatgpt and generating random groups of 8. Then if there are any real issues you can make a few manual adjustments. No point getting the kids to do it. It's like getting them to choose rooms for their Year 6 residential-causes more tears than necessary.

Really bad timing. Y11’s should be concentrating on their maths exam tomorrow and getting a good nights sleep, not messaging each other all night about prom and sleeping badly because they are worried they will end up on the wrong table.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 23:42

Schools don’t think. My DD was told she wasn’t head girl (they interviewed) 10 minutes before an AS exam (back in the day). Why they could not leave it until after exams is beyond me. It was a MFL Oral and dd really wanted the role. They didn’t care or know dd cared.

That’s really bad. It’s maths! Everyone takes it and it is really important.

At 10:30am tomorrow it will be finished. There is the 48 hours until Chemistry which is the next exam that everyone is taking.

Of even better - wait until Monday when they will all be done and have nothing better to do!

And yes - everyone writes down 3 people they would like to sit with. Guaranteed 1. Strongly aim for 2. Hope for all 3.

The exams will NOT be done on Monday. Dd has an exam EVERY DAY , up to and including, next Wednesday.

So they will all be finished"on Monday at all.
