AIBU to buy button-up pyjamas for DS after brain surgery?

DS 15 is having brain surgery next week. Just thinking about what would be best for him to wear with all the tubes coming out and realised probably button-up shirts would be best, of which he has none. Aibu to buy a whole lot of button-up pyjamas he will never wear again or is there another alternative?

Buy them, I’d not be worrying about amount of wear in this situation. Hope he has a good recovery,

I had a massive surgery on my head when I had tongue cancer and I wore button ups for a long time even after. I had button up pjs but also just oversized shirts. Depending on what they do and what tubes and things they put in after he could have a sore neck, shoulders, back…I couldn’t lift my arms for ages and a lot of clothes felt really heavy on my body.
Not quite what you asked about but hopefully a little helpful. Hope he makes a really speedy recovery

Bluewhitefloral · 09/06/2026 07:04

I would just buy them and then put them on Vinted when he no longer needs them. Hope his surgery goes well!

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 09/06/2026 07:06

Why would that be unreasonable? You can donate them to charity after. Hope it goes well.

Incandescentangel · 09/06/2026 07:08

He will probably wear hospital gowns at first. Would he wear shirts afterwards? Then at least you won’t be wasting money. Other alternatives are shorts with no top, or gym type vests . I know lots of men don’t bother wearing tops in hospital.

Thanks, ladies. Great advice. As part of his surgery, DS is getting some holes bored and will have two little 'horns' on top of his skull that will need protecting, as well as an implant screwed into a shoulder bone, which will also need easily removable clothes. To be honest, I have not thought about recovery that much yet, just the immediacy of the operation, so any tips you have would be great.

I always use button pyjamas for DS2 in hospital - in his case so they can get to his chest easily (heart issues so lots of monitoring pads stuck to him). So much easier to take them off too without going over the head and potentially dislodging things.

Best of luck to you and your DS for the procedure. Have you also got a good bag packed for yourself: comfy clothes, headphones, charger, snacks, mini toiletries? Time passes so slowly in the hospital so bring anything you can to make it easier on yourself.

My dh has had 3 brain surgeries. He has been glad of the pjs soon after as he was cold. There is something comforting about new pjs. Hope your ds' operation goes really well 🥰

Carryitjoyfully · 09/06/2026 07:17

Good luck to your DS.

Just wanted to post in solidarity with you. My god son is going into theatre tomorrow for a craniotomy to treat AVM. He's 18. Its been the worst experience for his parents. I wish your DS all the love and support he needs ❤️ if you want to ask any questions please feel free to pm me.

JeremiaBoogle · 09/06/2026 07:24

They are a good idea - my son was told to bring in button up tops - no over the head anything. Was surprisingly hard to get button up pjs for him!!

Do you think you won't get use out of them after or something? My son still has the pjs so not an unreasonable purchase for us.

ReprogramNeeded · 09/06/2026 07:37

My DS 15 wears button pj's. Bright stripey ones. Best of luck to your DS x

Buy whatever you need to help his recovery, and don't worry about whether you use them afterwards. Their purpose is to aid recovery, nothing further than that. Wishing you and DS all the best 💐

averythinline · 09/06/2026 07:49

Tu are usually good for pjs thet only have 2 with buttons though long sleeve and short sleeve... If hes going to have cannula etc short sleeve maybe good idea .and also if hospital hot . Ime they are either boiling or freezing!
Dressing gown if cold ircto wear over hospital gown pre pjs?
Best of luck to you all

turkeyboots · 09/06/2026 07:52

Buy loads of pyjamas too. Until they want him to start getting dressed properly, he'll probably get through 2 pairs a day (1 day, 1 night) plus spare for any leaks, accidents or dropping his dinner down himself.
DS spent 2 weeks in hospital a few years ago and we were panic buying pyjamas at time when we really didn't need the stress.

violetcuriosity · 09/06/2026 08:38

Hope you’re both ok and good luck 💕. I recently spent two weeks in hospital and my mum ended up having to buy me so many pyjamas bless her, when I got home I had nowhere to put them but they were so useful at the time.

Just get what will be easiest and most comfortable. Very different, but I had major spinal surgery to correct scoliosis when I was 15, and I got clothes that would fit over my armpit-to-hips plaster cast afterwards that I would never wear again after that long 3 months - but they were so important to feeling a bit more normal once I was recovering, and feeling confident enough to see friends etc once I was ready. Huge best wishes, I hope it all goes as well as possible.

Tiddlysocks · 09/06/2026 12:20

I want to say thank-you so very much to everyone who has responded. It has really touched me, and your best wishes have made me want to cry.

Oh gosh what a big op, I hope youre ok and it goes well.

When my little one had big surgeries I'd get oversized button up PJs and clothes, sometimes they needed to be boys instead of girls for more options but it was what was needed at the time.
At least being small she grew into some of them the next year! Probably less likely with a 16 year old so just do what you need to for now

HiCandles · 09/06/2026 12:29

Of course YANBU. This is one of those situations where (finances allowing) you have to do what makes life easiest in the short term. I remember my mum doing similar when I had shoulder surgery at age 10.
Your sons will either end up being worn occasionally in the pyjamas rotation, soiled by blood/drains in hospital and disposed of, or donated to charity.

Larrythecatforpm · 09/06/2026 12:30

Perfect for hostipal, my son was in for a week and had buttoned PJs worked well for all the wires and canulas etc

ThaneOfGlamis · 09/06/2026 12:51

For comfy day clothes a few cheaper shops do adaptive clothing now. I know asda, primark and m&s do. In case you want things like hoodies with openings for tubes etc. Hope all goes well with the surgery.
