To not “get” Disneyland

Can anyone explain the appeal of Disneyland to me please? I just don’t understand. In my mind it’s endless queues, full of people, but everything is fake so there are no real sights, yet people seem to love it and go back year after year. Am I missing something and should give it a go, or is it expensive overhyped window dressing??

You’re not missing something. It’s just not for you. I love Disneyland/ world and think they’re great holidays but it doesn’t mean it’s for everyone.

I think our childhoods were very different.

🤣🤣 ok

But that’s why I’m asking! “In my mind” is just trying to explain why I’m asking.

Ok, but you've said "in my mind it's endless queues". I've been several times and I've never queued more than 20 minutes for anything, usually a lot less. Sometimes there's no queues at all. So the image in your head is incorrect. At least, if you time it right.

I went with the kids to Disney land in Florida. I thought it wouldn't be for me but it was great. The parades, the characters, the genuine cheerfulness of all the staff.

Also went to Disney land Paris which wasn't as good at the time , back in c2008.

britinnyc · 07/06/2026 19:43

I don’t get it either, it is well done for a theme park but I don’t get the magic. I have boys so who weren’t in to Disney as kids so we went once and that was enough. I live in CA and work near Disneyland and so many of my coworkers go all the time, they get cheap passes for being local but I don’t understand the appeal of going to such a crowded place all the time, especially since most don’t have young kids anymore

Yes the two are poles apart. I think often people who claim it’s crap have only experienced the smaller Paris version.

XenoBitch · 07/06/2026 19:45

You don't have to get it.
I have friends who recently went to the Disneyland in Japan. They had a blast. They are in their 50s and 60s. No kids.

5128gap · 07/06/2026 19:46

I've not been for 15 years, but, back then, the rides were an excellent sensory experience. Beautiful sets, clever effects, music, great attention to detail, the fast rides just the right side of exciting without being too intense or scary, so suitable for the whole family.
If you or your children enjoy Disney films it's fun to see them in different ways, as rides or as live shows. The shows themselves are fabulous, very talented performers and just the right length so no one gets bored.
If you look for it, there will be something everyone can enjoy, because there's lots of variety, from quiet bird shows to massive firework displays.
The queues aren't the best, it's crowded and loud, and obviously its fake. But there can be beauty and fun in the unreal too.
I wouldn't want to live there my whole life without ever seeing a mountain, a beach or a forest, but for a week of something different, it's an experience I enjoyed.

tichbrew · 07/06/2026 19:46

I don't really get it either as an adult but if I was 7 I'd probably have loved it and if I were to go with young kids I would imagine I'd get a kick out of their enjoyment of it.

Octavia64 · 07/06/2026 19:26

It’s primarily for kids.

my kids loved it - they got to see Cinderella etc

I have to disagree with this. Ive been a few times and there's always way more adults than kids there. I mean adults without children. They even push kids out of the way and block their view when the parade and fireworks are on. Most kids seem to get overwhelmed and tired pretty quickly too.

Before I first went, I thought it was for the kids but now Ive seen its the adults who appreciate it more. I think there are a lot of adults who are reliving their childhood through Disney. Or like me, never got to go to places like this as children so are loving it now.

Ophy83 · 07/06/2026 19:48

I wouldn't go year upon year but it was good fun to go with the kids and their friends, there were some great rides, they loved all the merch.

TheChosenTwo · 07/06/2026 19:49

You don’t need to get it. I know it’s not for me, it’s all things I hate in one place that is so far away from where I live that it’s easy to avoid.

Some people really buy into the magic, great for them. I prefer holidaying elsewhere. I was taken to Florida Disney a couple of times as a teenager as we had family local to there. I thought it was weird at the time and have absolutely no desire to go back.

Anghkooey · 07/06/2026 19:50

My husband and I love Disney. We don’t have kids. We also love other theme parks and travel to many different ones across the world. Disney is one of the most immersive and Disney world is by far the biggest. Especially if up include going to universal while there. We love rides mainly but also the general theming. My husband normally needs to be dragged out of Galaxy edge (star wars land). I don’t know if it makes a difference but we’re both autistic and absolutely love the escapism of film/TV and general fantasy/other worlds. So I think that’s why it appeals to us so much. Then the sensory aspects of the rides.

I know you can go on rides in this country. But honestly I’ve never yet found a ride as good as Velocicoaster in Universal studios. And the different types of coasters available is great. Space mountain I love. There’s not a ride in this country that matches that either yet. Guardians of the galaxy. Tron. Honestly to us they are all on another level to say a day at Thorpe park going on SAW and having your head bashed about as they haven’t bothered to maintain the ride well.

The theming in the queues is also amazing. The simulator rides like Flight of Passage. You don’t get those over here.

I’ll never understand people who enjoy watching sports. Or going to raves. Or who spend £20000 on a single painting. But if it brings them joy then crack on! Everyone is different.

Do the kids actually believe they are the characters from the films? Like the animal characters are huge?!

I don’t get this either, but then according to my mother I haven’t believed in Father Christmas since I was 3! 😂

PistachioTiramisu · 07/06/2026 19:53

Awful, awful place - nothing would make me visit. Hate everything Disney anyway - but so artificial and noisy. Rip off place.

You don't need to get it. Just don't go if it's not your cup of tea.

I never quite understand these posts where people say they hate something and ask people to convince them why they should like it.

Different people like different things. Its simple as that

Edited

They're not asking other people to convince them to like it, it's a faux enquiry to encourage other snobs to shit on it.

We get it op, you're far too cultured for Disneyland, everyone there is a loser and you're much better than them because you've been to see the Eiffel tower instead, well done.

cramptramp · 07/06/2026 19:55

It’s aimed at children. They love it.

sprigatito · 07/06/2026 19:55

I don’t get it either. It sounds like wall to wall plastic, fakery, garish, noisy, shit food, everything overpriced and crammed with people…it’s all my worst nightmares rolled into one. Millions of people seem to love it though, more power to them 🤷🏻‍♀️

NotMeAtAll · 07/06/2026 19:55

My friends were going to Paris for a holiday. Their kids were crying because they thought they'd have to go to Disneyland again. 🤣

This is a chat forum, where people, you know... erm.... chat about things, have a conversation, about things they find funny, shocking, distasteful, likeable and unlikeable.

ToadRage · 07/06/2026 19:58

I have been 3 times, twice with my parents and once with school I love it and even at my age (39) would love to go again. It's not for everyone but if you look past the cost and queues and are a particular fan of the brand it's a lot of fun.

Mine did.

i still have the photo of my dd with Ariel that she made us queue for an hour to get.

it literally made her year though. She didn’t stop talking about it for a very long time

whippersnapper55 · 07/06/2026 20:01

Each to their own 🤷‍♀️ I took my kids when they were small and they had a great time and I enjoyed seeing them have a great time. I definitely wouldn't go back year after year though and definitely wouldn't go without kids. But if that's what others want to do, good luck to them!

Bunnyofhope · 07/06/2026 20:06

I love fair grounds and rides. I don't get anything extra from it being themed but I love the rides. Scarey but no real danger.

ThatLemonBee · 07/06/2026 20:10

I used to think the same way but when I went first time 18 years ago I loved it as much as my then only son . Now I’ve taken all the kids and i absolutely love it to bits
