Posting for traffic to get more responses.
My mum, very fully active, vital 75 yrs old lady who was never ill until 2022.
Last week Thursday she went for Tetanus jab and also had an annual check up blood test Crp, this was 105.
Gp contacted her Friday morning saying seems like some infection and gave her Amoxyclav antibiotics as my mum mentioned she had cough for approximately 2 weeks so GP thought crp is high cos of that.
On Monday mum went for another blood test and crp went to 147.
On Tuesday it was repeated and crp went to 178.
Gp sent mum to local hospital for more blood tests.
They did some liver function, this was bilirubin 16.8, ast 0.67, alp 2.46, ggt0.92.
Leukocytes 11.17..the rest of fbc was normal.
They don't know what it could be.
She has no symptoms. Feeling well, eats well, no symptoms no pain.
Only the cough.
The cough is so much bad now when she speaks on phone, she gets heavy cough fit after every word.
She says its nonstop tickles in her throat.
They say chest clear, apparently had xray, ok too.
Also had ultrasound on her liver and around, all normal.
She has pacemaker since 2022 when she had hip op and heart failure after the operation they said it was mixture of the op drugs caused it.
They also checked the pacemaker on Tuesday- apparently ok.
They said have no idea what's wrong.
They did covid, flu etc tests, all negative.
She is alone on the infectious diseases ward ( abroad)
Nobody knows what will happen.
They gave her IV antibiotics Cefuruxim I worry she has pneumonia ...
I spoke with the dr - she thinks some autoimmune illness but not sure.
Mum has absolutely no symptoms. She says if she had not had the first blood test last week, she wouldn't have know ...

I have no knowledge or information to contribute. It may be helpful to say where she is (abroad). Also hoping that the bump helps .

Hugs to you and your mum

Fascinate · 05/06/2026 22:25

"She has absolutely no symptoms" but she has had a cough for over 2 weeks that has now developed to where she cannot speak without a "heavy coughing fit".

Her inflammatory marker (crp) is highly elevated - there is something wrong. Persistent cough.

I dont know enough to comment on the other blood results you've quoted, but there is definitely something wrong here.

Endofyear · 05/06/2026 22:35

If she had pneumonia, surely that would show up on an x-ray? My DH had pneumonia last year and he was really ill - ended up in hospital for 5 weeks with i/v antibiotics and a chest drain. It seems unlikely that your mum has pneumonia with no symptoms other than the cough? I'm wondering if it could be something gastric?

I really hope the medics are able to get to the bottom of it soon and your mum makes a full recovery 💐

Yeah but the cough started with itchy eyes and runny nose, no other symptoms, she thought nothing of it at the time..
She never had a such cough before, always healthy and very fit.
None of this makes sense, even her GP called the hospital today confused.
I spoke to the Dr myself, they said its extremely peculiar...as the results make no sense..

I asked her about every single part of her body, says nope, nothing, no reflux, no heart burn..No nausea etc.
She actually wants to go home as feels perfectly well.
They perforated her 2 veins today with the IV canulas, both hands got very swollen asap as the Atbs were going out of the vein inside her hand.

Sorry to hear this. It's good that she feels well. I am no doctor and can't interpret the bloods. My mum had a persistent cough that became very worrying but clear X ray etc. Her main other symptom was fatigue but that crept up over time. They couldn't initially identify an infection but eventually after a 48 hour culture I think of her bloods, they determined that it was a heart infection so required a lot of IV antibiotics. Apparently cough is not the main symptom that would lead a doctor to consider this condition. My mum had a heart vulnerability that put her at higher risk for this and I wonder if a pace maker could also be a risk factor. She's in the right place for the doctors to figure it out. Hope she gets well soon.

Which country is she in. Does she live there or is on holiday. Has she travelled anywhere recently. Are there any outbreaks of respiratory illness where she is.

They checked the pacemaker on Tuesday as they thought of heart infection within it. Apparently ok.

This is her home country in central Europe.
She didn't travel anywhere. She is mostly home, or goes into local shop in her village.

Also she says when she coughs, no pain in lungs .. nothing. She says its like tickle in throat.

I am not a doctor.

I would say she is having a reaction to something she has inhaled. She had runny nose and itchy eyes at the time the cough started. Was she gardening, cleaning, something like that? A chemical, or some spores from something, some seeds?

Rubeeee · 06/06/2026 00:13

I am thinking post nasal drip if associated with itchy eyes .

Jopo12 · 06/06/2026 00:51

Sounds like hayfever. It hurts eyes, runny nose, ticklu throat. These are allergic symptoms

Harley90 · 06/06/2026 00:53

It could still be covid, the tests have a high false negative rate. I don't know if it's the same for flu etc. Hope she feels better soon 💐

Junejunee · 06/06/2026 08:10

Just spoke to mum. She says about 4 weeks ago her eyes started heavily watering, itchy, and runny nose, this lasted about 2 weeks and went on its own. Then the cough started. She says she thought nothing about it .

She always does gardening, cuts a massive law, has huge garden.
Says had a complete blood panel done a month ago, apparently Dr mentioned how great her results were.
She said she really wants to go home, have a proper food as hungry and tired from the IV drips, says he both hands are blue as they keep taking cannulas out and in, very sore..

It could be extreme allergic reaction. I am extremely allergic to dustmites, trees, grass, mould. Last winter, it turned into a dreadful cough that wouldn't go away and then asthma.

I didn't have blood tests, so don't know about that.

It does sound a bit similar.

Junejunee · 06/06/2026 09:33

Mum just had Dr's round and liver tests are now normal, crp is still high.

I thought of that as i myself I suffer from many seasonal allergies and coughs myself, however I am used to it as i have it since being little.
She never had any allergies, nothing would- that came on now? She is always in the garden and surrounded by trees, grass , fields.
We even thought Lyme disease from tick but dr dismissed it as crp wouldn't be that high.

TB, cancer, autoimmune disease. I'm trying to think of others diagnoses I have seen with that high a crp.
Wegeners granulomatosis. Pretty rare but I've seen it before. Does affect the respiratory system. It's a vasculitis so inflammation of the vascular system.

She has not any symptoms of the glanuromasis. All has is dry irritating cough which only comes if she speaks.
Cancer of what? Tb- no symptoms either.
Dr's said very confused themselves as her FBC is normal, they concentrated on her red cells, platelets especially.

"Cancer of unknown primary" (CUP) they have clinics in the UK for this where they do multiple assessments and investigations. Sometimes never find the cause.
Re the wegeners...I did think you'd mentioned sinus problems originally...can't see your original post whilst I'm typing this...and this can go with wegeners.

It must be really worrying for you. I'm just trying to think back over 30 years at unusual things I've seen.
Even harder when you're not near. Good luck

The sinus- runny nose came with runny eyes, lasted a week or two, it probably was a allergic reaction as she spends days in her garden and outside her house a new road gets build, very dusty all over nonstop.
My cousin lives across mums house and reported a very similar symptoms apart the high crp, but she didn't have a blood test for that to see..
The hospital keeps ignoring the cough, mum keeps pointing to it, however they say, its probably caused by dry air etc.
The liver blood tests are still a bit mildly abnormal.
Her crp is now 84, she is on IV Cefuroxime.
